When G-d sent venomous snakes to bite the Israelites as punishment for their improper speech, He also commanded Moses to make an image of a 'fiery serpent' to aid in their cure...whoever had been bitten would look upon this image of Moses' copper snake, and live. This copper snake had a long shelf life...it was a treasured relic for hundreds of years, until King Hezekiah destroyed it. Why did one of the most righteous kings in Israel's history destroy the handiwork of Moses? And what does all this have to do with us, today?
The Torah portion of Chukat (Numbers 19 : 1 - 22 : 1) is read on Shabbat, Tammuz 7, 5784 - July 13, 2024
