Poet History :
Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai Background
Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai (Sindhi: شاه عبداللطيف ڀٽائي; 1689/1690 - 21 December 1752) holds a revered place in the hearts of many. Known by several honorifics such as Lakhino Latif, Latif Ghot, Bhittai, and Bhit Jo Shah, he was a Sindhi Sufi mystic and poet from Pakistan. His poetic genius has left an indelible mark on the Sindhi language and culture.
Here are some key aspects of his life and legacy:
Birth and Background:
Born around 1689 or 1690 in Hala Haweli, near modern-day Hala in Sindh, Pakistan.
He hailed from a Sayyid family, tracing their lineage back to the Islamic prophet Muhammad through his daughter Fatima.
His great-grandfather was the renowned Sufi poet Shah Abdul Karim Bulri1.
Wanderer and Mystic:
At the age of approximately 20, Bhittai embarked on a journey across Sindh and neighboring lands.
During his travels, he met various mystics and Jogis, whose influence resonates in his poetry.
His verses reflect a deep spiritual connection and a profound understanding of human existence.
Life and Poetry:
Bhittai’s piety and spirituality attracted a large following, but also stirred some hostility.
After three years of wandering, he returned home and was married into an aristocratic family. However, he was soon widowed and chose not to remarry.
Spending his final years in Bhit (Bhit Shah), he passed away in 1752.
A mausoleum was erected over his grave, which became a popular pilgrimage site.
His disciples compiled his poems into the Shah Jo Risalo, first published in 1866. Numerous translations in Urdu and English followed1.
Legacy and Influence:
Bhittai’s poetry continues to resonate with the people of Sindh.
His simple yet profound verses evoke ecstasy and touch the soul.
He remains venerated throughout the province, and his work transcends linguistic and cultural boundaries.
