My first GF's father was a pretty tough and intimidating guy. I knew he was a nerd and a sweetheart on the inside though so he never scared me. The first time he met me he could tell I was extremely nervous (I wasn't, what he interpreted as anxiety is actually tourette's syndrome) so the first time I went to her house he offered to drive me home and tried to grill me the whole way there. None of his scare tactics worked and eventually he kinda slumped forward in his seat with a defeated look. I will never forget the next words he said: "I was SO looking forward to the first boyfriend, but then she had to go and find somebody nice..."

At least that's how it is for me. I'm not sure if anyone's ever tried to intimidate me as such, but if they have, I didn't notice. My SO won over my mum, my friends, and me, all in one sweep. We’d been talking for a while and we finally had our first date. Super excited and happy. However due to some cruel twist of fate, this was also the moment my dad passed away unexpectedly, and I was called that I had to come home. I was completely distraught and panicking, because to do that I had to get an immediate flight as I was living in another country and on minimum wages (student scholarship ayeee). Without hesitation, my SO called our mutual friend, helped me pack, drove me to the airport, and paid for my flight. She could’ve walked away from that entire mess, as we didn’t know each other that well, but she did the kindest most generous thing I could’ve imagined. When I told my fam and friends their collective immediate response was “MARRY HER”. I’m still sad my dad never got to meet her, he would’ve loved her, he really would’ve. We’re still together, a year and a half later :)

I won over my current wife's mother. On our 2nd date, my girlfriend told me her baby's daddy couldn't watch her daughter like she had planned (he told her that after seeing me). I just told her in front of him and her mother, the baby (2 yr female) could go with us and instead of seeing a rated-R movie we could see a cartoon. Everybody jaw dropped (especially baby daddy), when I said that, the baby daddy thought he was gonna ruin the day. Then me, her, and the baby left him sitting at her mother's house and we went out and enjoyed our self. A few months later baby girl was calling me daddy. P.S. When you hook up with a woman who already has kids, those become your kids rather you planted the seed or not. If you can't accept that fact, leave her and her kids alone.

He was right beside my sister at her lowest point and even took my advice. That's when I knew "Sis, don't let this one get away!" They took the kids (his and hers) to Disneyland where he popped the question. She said yes! Some time later after my grandparents' funeral they went to Lake Tahoe to make it official. I now have a new brother- in- law and 2 step-nieces and a step-nephew and I'm loving it. Welcome to our family.

Some of us had it easy. My girlfriend and I were good friends for about two years before starting to date. We ended up both getting into bad situations romantically and getting hurt by said situations within about a month of each other. We confided in each other and as a result started spending a lot of time together hanging out just with each other instead of with our usual friend group over the next few months. Everyone thought we were together from then on, though that didn't actually become true for several months. When we did finally admit we had feelings for each other and became a couple, we were concerned our parents might think we'd been hiding something as we'd been swearing we weren't a couple for months. When we told her mother one day on a car trip, her mother smiled ear to ear and said "Finally! Thank god, I've only been hoping for that for about six months now!" It was at that moment we realized our concerns were probably unfounded.

I know the exact moment my dad fully approved of my boyfriend. I was minutes away from leaving to go move in to my dorm room for freshman year of college, and I was stuck in a job I absolutely hated but had to keep for school (very different, very long story, finally quit). I got a call from my supervisor who told me that I would have to double my hours while also going to school full time. I hung up the phone and broke out into ugly crying sobs. BF was at my door immediately and just held me as I bawled and my parents came in to talk to me. My dad saw how my BF was handling it, keeping me supported and trying to calm me down. My dad was extremely hard to please at that point because I had gotten out of a terribly abusive relationship almost a year prior and this BF and I had been together for 6 months then. My older brother’s girlfriend came over to our house for the first time. He kept their relationship a secret for a few months until my mom saw the texts they sent each other. It’s kinda awkward at first and then a week later, she comes over in the morning with my brother and he goes to get something from the kitchen. I’m sitting there quietly because I don’t wanna be awkward and then she sees my sweater. “You like Marvel?” Me, a little startled, looked down at my shirt and realized why she said that “Yeah, I do. My auntie gave me this last year.” “Oh that’s cool! Who’s your favorite superhero?” “Thor!” Then I bring up a few embarrassing moments about my brother and she shares some too. And the stories she told me, oh boy. I never knew my brother was as weird as me. A few moments of silence pass. “...Have you watched The Maze Runner movies or read the books before?” Her face LIGHTS up “Yeah! I was so obsessed with the series!” I get excited and we talk about our favorite characters in the books and stuff (I liked Newt, she liked Minho) My brother walks in and he now realizes how much of a friggin nerd I am. When she leaves when dinner rolls around (she stayed the whole day), my brother pulls me aside. “I have never seen you so chatty before, what happened?” “(Girlfriend’s name) happened! She and I both love The Maze Runner! I thought we would just be awkward around each other forever!” “Oh really?” “Please keep her!!” He just laughs at what I said and we go eat dinner. I’ve met his ex before and she was nice, but a little bit of a snob. I really hope he marries his current girlfriend. I really like her :3 Just knowing about The Maze Runner or The Outsiders will instantly win me over

And because of that, my parents, particularly my mother (who was Mimi's sister), did not approve. So one day they decided to go out to eat. Except this time, my mother was about to discover what was probably the one thing that could get her to give my future uncle a chance. And that thing was me. You see, as it turns out, tiny me absolutely adored uncle Steven. While the debate about his worthiness had been going on, he and I hadn't met until that day. I was too young for me to remember it, but apparently we got along like butter and toast. And that convinced my parents to give him a chance. If /I/ saw something in this man, then he must be doing SOMETHING right. So basically, the decision was taken out of their hands. Which is totally something tiny me would do. (I was a bit of a brat...) TL;DR Aunt meets guy, mom and dad don't approve of guy, little me ADORES guy, mom and dad are convinced to give him a chance, guy becomes uncle and they continue to have a happy marriage

Story Time! My sister (let's call her Emily for the sake of the story) winning over her MIL was actually quite dramatic lol Basically Emily and her bf (we'll call him Dave) had only been dating about 6 months, and he was out with his brother and 6 year old nephew playing football (soccer) in the middle of summer. Dave started to get a headache after about 4 hours in the sweltering heat, and decided to call it a day and go home. His headache got worse as the day went on. Emily popped by his flat cos it was a Thursday, and she always stayed at his on Thursdays, to find him curled in the fatal position sobbing. Dave's a typical bloke-y bloke, so he doesn't really cry or express emotions well, so she drove him to A&E. The doctors just told him it was heatstroke, and told him to drink plenty of water and take pain killers, and sent him on his merry way. They get back to his place and go to bed. Next morning, Dave says his headache is worse, and he starts puking. Emily said she was going to take the day off work to keep and eye on him, but Dave persuades her to go into work. She gets to work, but something in her gut told her something was seriously wrong with Dave, so while on her way back to Dave's flat, she calls his GP. The GP orders an emergency CT scan, and Emily takes Dave back to the hospital. They do the scan, and it turns out Dave had an aneurysm which ruptured and his brain was haemorrhaging. Left any longer and he would've died. He was then rushed to a specialist hospital 90 miles away for emergency surgery. So my sister saving her boyfriend's life convinced her MIL that she was the right one for her youngest child 😂 That was in 2006, and Dave's doing fine now. He can be a bit forgetful at times, but is otherwise 100% healthy. He and Emily now have an 8 year old son and 3 year old daughter 😊

This one's my parents. When my mom brought my dad over to her house, her parents and her brother were initially a little suspicious of him (because he had a "weird" accent, which turned out to be german-ish since he studied in switzerland for quite some time). The time he won her parents' heart was when he played the piano in her house, and the fact that he already has a job. For her brother, it was when he brought a car to her house (to pick her up in one of their dates). Apparently it was a pretty good car, and her brother fell in love with it. Because of this, my mom said that she'll consider a potential husband for me if he has a job already AND picks me up on a car for dates and such.

I was seeing a boy in HS (80’s) who had a mohawk and wore eyeliner. He was a really great guy, very smart, in touch with his emotions, mentally stable. Even so, because of his “look,” I was terrified for my military father to meet him but had him over for dinner. After he left my dad didn’t mention his appearance but said “ he treats you better than other guys you have liked. I approve.” 😳🤯 I was thrilled and had new respect for my dad who I already thought was amazing. Now I wonder whatever happened to him...🤔 (Jerry? You out there?)

I think my wife’s dad only accepted me after we where together a year. When we started dating I was out of work due to illness. So I was broke, jobless and no education past high school. I went to college and studied an advanced music tech and sound engineering (got me nowhere despite finishing top of my class) but during college I got a job around Easter and spent my first paycheque entirely on my wife. Like every cent went on her. New dress, eyebrows, nails, fancy dinner and then we went to see her favourite musical (I was a full blown goth at 19 and still hate musicals) I got a small nod of approval when I picked her up. Since then we’ve gone drinking, played mini golf, and he now laughs at my jokes. And he walked her down the isle to me so I think I’m in there. Her mum loved me from day one cause I made her daughter smile.

I asked her once if she liked my boyfriend at the time and she said “I try not to have an opinion of boyfriends because the ones the parents hate the most end up getting married into the family.” So, you get the picture. My current boyfriend came over early in the morning just to help clean my room (I have really bad anxiety and depression, and I get anxious when I clean my room). As my boyfriend is catching cob webs in the corners of the ceiling my mom walks, and is completely shocked. She loves him now

He’d make it very clear if he didn’t like you. We met a couple weeks into dating and he immediately welcomed me like family, and almost three years later treats me well. We have never argued, or felt weird besides general awkwardness. My husband was as shocked as I was, but assumes it’s because I didn’t get into the relationship for selfish reasons. My girlfriend's mother is a single mom. 4 kids, my girlfriend is the youngest daughter. All from the same man, divorce was sort off recent. They had a pervert that would bring his affaires to the parking lot right next to their house. And they'd drop "tissue" paper and trash out in the open and then drive off. When I parked on their porch the first time. My girlfriend told me about it and that it's been happening for a while but the police wouldn't do anything because he'd drive off before they came. I let my girlfriend out, turned my car and parked it right on his rear bumper. Trapping him. I knocked on his window and said, I was calling the police. They can either pickup all their trash together and I'll let them drive off or stick around and see what happens. I locked my car and walked into the house while the "couple started picking trash". They probably picked a new make out spot, never saw them again. But I've been pretty golden since.

About my mother's cousin brother(mamaji) . I didn't even know about him, but he came to live in my city and contacted us, so we started hanging out. He was also in middle of getting and arranged marriage. His parents died when he was relatively young, so he had his father's brother take care of him and sister. Anyway, at first I heard that the marriage talks didn't really go anywhere as the bride's father was not convinced or something. But during a meeting, mamaji brought a bottle of whisky and offered drinks(we live in India, so marriage is a big religious event, so it's a little uncommon to bring drinks). They instantly became best friends and now after over 3-4 years of marriage, mamaji and his step-father are inseparable. His wife(mamiji) always talks about how close mamaji is with her father and her father gets sad if they don't meet atleast once in 2 weeks. She even said that when she goes home without mamaji, her father gets angry, and he said to her that he would rather have him come than his own daughter. It blows my mind

The story of the LDR and the boyfriend visiting the family is similar to that of my grandparents. My nana was stationed in Saudi Arabia. My papa was home in Canada. While my nana was in SA, my papa always visited my great grandmother for tea and coffee (I believe it was every Wednesday, but I might be wrong). When my nana came home, my great grandmother basically said my papa was a good hearted man who was genuine with his feelings. They were going onto 51 years of being married together when my nana died. They’re the reason I believe soulmates exist.

Here’s a daughter’s pov on the story of how my boyfriend won my parents over. So, when we met i was already in a relationship with someone who i now realize just wasnt for me. With rose colored glasses on, it was hard to realize that he was stubborn, selfish, and only wanted me so that he could brag to his friends that his girl was a gamer. I never noticed this until that same guy introduced me to my now boyfriend, but before, just a stranger. My parents knew about the relationship i was in. They understood that he really wasnt right for me, and i knew they could tell, but they never brought it up because they just knew it was going to backfire and break. Boy, they couldntve been more right. Eventually i begin talking to this friend more. We did this thing called Late Night Talks, where when we were tired or it was just super late, we’d call eachother and just play games. Minecraft, warzone, you name it. We just vibed really well. Then, a situation i dont want to get into happened. My ex was getting really angry at the things going on in his life, and he began taking it out on me. I understand he couldnt control it, but i just felt like a punching bag. I didnt want to be a punching bag. I spoke to the friend about it in our following Late Night Talk, and we confronted my bf about it. We told him to stop, and he agreed. Yet he never did. So, i eventually decided i had enough and broke up with him. I was honestly extremely upset about it. Sure he was mean sometimes but i felt bad for leaving him when he was in a difficult chapter of his life. 19 with no job or car, still living with his mother and sisters. I began talking to the late night friend about it, and he tried his best to listen. He had never been in a relationship before, despite being 17, but he wanted to help the best he could anyways. He wanted to make me smile. More late nights go by, and eventually he admits that he’s grown a crush on me. This didnt catch me off guard at all. With how much time we had spent together and how easily we complimented eachother, it seemed like only a matter of time. I really loved him back, but I wasn’t ready for a relationship yet however, and i told him that. He didnt push. He just said he’d wait for me. A few more weeks pass by and i finally feel better about the break up. I understood that it was for the better for me, and that’s what was important. I went to the late night friend, and told him that yes.. i was ready. And from that day on, we were together. Keep in mind by the way, ALL OF THIS IS LONG DISTANCE. We’re halfway across the country from eachother and we feel this strongly about our relationship. I start spending more time with him, even when it’s not late at night. We talk all day on the phone, playing games with our friend group and eachother. Eventually, my parents began to pick up on this. It came to the moment where they began asking. I told them about how and why i broke up with the previous one, and why and how i got with the new one. They continued to observe our behavior, of course not being intrusive, and understoof that he really made me happy. When i was with the previous one, i seemed a bit sheltered and i shyed away. When i was with him though, i was always smiling and dreaming. Not to mention that he had a job and a car, while being 2 years younger than the other one. They called me out to the living room one night and told me to bring my phone (cuz we were talking at the time) and they gave us our blessing. They noticed how he made me open up and they wanted me to be with someone who truly made me happy. They didnt care about distance. As long as there was a smile on my face, they were happy. So, they gave us their blessings that night, i guess you could say. A few weeks later, my dad passed away to pancreatic cancer. I was devastated. I couldnt go 5 minutes without crying or just feeling hopeless and depressed. And my boyfriend... he kept me together. He took those broken pieces of me and kept them held together with superglue. He made me smile when i was in my darkest moments. I was happy thought that my dad was able to approve of him and prove it before he was gone. Also, he was stressed and filled with anxiety too. The stress of his senior year being online due to covid, his mom being on his ass about his homework, not to mention of course, he was in his first relationship and was scared of if he’d be a good boyfriend or not. He wanted to treat me right but he was scared he was doing something wrong. He’s always so cute when he’s nervous.. he twirls his curly head or hair and bites down on his lips... so adorable. And during those hard times for him, i kept him together. I reassured him he was doing great for a first relationship, and i helped encourage him to get his homework done. His grades stayed high and his heart remained full of love, because i was able to prevent him from snapping in two. Not only did we compliment eachother, but we held eachother together when times were tough. Its not one sided in the slightest. I wanna spend as much time witb him now as possible. He feels like that perfect part of me that i never knew i was longing for before. And our parental relationships? Whenever my mom and i talk about a serious topic, my mom lets him join in the conversation because he considers him a big part of the family. Whenever his mom walks into his room, or maybe one of his brothers, we wave at eachother, or maybe even sometimes talk as if we know eachother well. His family is amazing, and they think highly of me. Im also happy my mom thinks highly of him and understands our relationship so well. It just goes to show, people. You shouldnt stick with someone if you dont think they truly make you happy. If you’re struggling to find a good relationship, choose one who makes you smile the most. Choose one with someone who will keep you held together and your lowest, and someone you’ll keep together at their lowest. Anything is possible with a little bit of true, genuine love.

My in-laws hate me. :D I'd be worried if they didn't... My family adores him because he's always helpful and polite, at least to their faces. Sometimes they can get tiresome...

My ex parents didnt approve of me when we started dating but I remember this moment. (Context: they are very religious I am not (great start) they saw me as someone who need saving) We were at dinner with his side of the family. I saw someone I knew who was working so I excused myself and walked over and asked when her next break was and we could have a chat. (I hadn't seen her in years) she said she could take it now. I walked back over to the table and said. "I am so sorry but I haven't seen so-and-so for years I will back" I got my drink and went outside with her in full view of the table and we were chatting and she starts crying. I get up hug her and hold her telling her that everything will be okay and that I am here for her. After she is done crying I go back in get my make-up that was in my bag and hand it to her. She tells me her daughter (S) about 13 mounths at the time was going to be there in a little bit I offered to look after her as she didnt know what to do. I go back in and sit at the table. after a little bit I see her come over with S and I get up and hold S and walk back over to our table with S. His parents were looking at me so I just whispered "she needed someone and I was there I would do that for anyone" though out dinner I was looking after S. At the end of the night when we were all leaving and saying goodbye I said goodbye and was walking back to my car when my ex parents came over and wrapped me in a hug. They had never done this before. From then on when ever I saw them they would hug me or introduce me to people as their daughter-in-law. Me taking the time to help someone that was stuck.

With my first serious relationship was this girl that was head and shoulders better than the last one. She proved to my mom how responsible she was and how well I listened to her ( it was mostly 50/50 on the responsibility thing ) one day my ex was talking about a year plan to move out and get our own place. My mom grinned ear to ear. My mother then proceeds to give her a house key and her phone number and says if my son does you wrong you call me and I'll take care of it lol

The way he looked at her. It was so obvious he was hooked and could only see her. Got married, he cried when she walked into the church, last year and just had their baby son just a few days ago. They are absolutely adorable and totally over the moon.

One specific dad told me how he loves that even though I knew that the girl and her family are moving to Sweden I stayed with her for the remaining 3 months, to take care of his daughter. I remember on the final day before they left, I said my goodbyes and her dad gave me a huge hug and thanked me again and again for taking good care of her. I was so damn close to crying because this big dude is literally on the verge of tears that his daughter won't be with that one really good boyfriend anymore.

My boyfriend won my family over pretty quickly but what sealed the deal most was when he absolutely sobbed at my grandfathers funeral. He cried more than I did

I won over my ex’s parents by dating her. She was definitely on the chubbier side. And she had depression. They loved me. Even though I broke their rules, no hand holding or touching. And since it was at a hockey game they could see us (luckily they were on the other side of the stadium) and he even said I was a cool guy in the car after the game.

When my parents met my first boyfriend my dad was a bit skeptical at first. Until he saw us talk about musicals to each other (I’m a huge musical nerd). He saw how happy I was with him. Once my boyfriend was gone he said: „You need to marry him” Four years later and we’re engaged.
