Mother with American accent, young child with American accent, second child mentioned but not expounded on and a young baby. Not much info on the whole situation, other than the father has a chronic disability and cannot work. If that is the case then why choose to have another child? You'll know how much young children cost after having had two of them. Why is it "insulting" that you have to make a choice based on the amount of money you'll have? A tough decision, certainly, but it's not like it's a surprise to you that children are expensive. Maybe the father's chronic disability only reared its head after the baby was born, which is unfortunate, but this is surely why you build some savings before considering a third child? I don't doubt that there are some unfortunate cases of people who the system has let down, but there seems to be a constant issue of news videos like this where no questions are asked about any of the background to the whole situation. Instead, it's just someone saying they need more cash for X, without asking why X came about or what they've done about it. A "good job, the kind of job I expected to have after completing my education" could mean anything in my book! What job is it? Where do you live? Median rental cost in London (which is where this family seems to be, NOT mentioned in the report) is 53.6% of income, increasing to above 80% in the most expensive London boroughs, so 70% of salary going on rent indicates to me that you're either living in one of the expensive boroughs, or you aren't as well paid as you imply! Wouldn't hurt for news channels to ask some questions now and then.

To the rhetoric of “why should I pay for their kids?”…you should have an interest in normal working families being able to afford kids (regardless of how - preventing the rich and from skimming extortionate rents from working people is a better option) because those kids will eventually be paying for your retirement and old-age healthcare and they will therefore prevent economic collapse.

One obvious problem with the cap is that you could be happily working and married to someone else who is, decide rationally on the basis of your dual incomes that you can afford to have 3 kids, then get hit by chronic illness and/or the death of your spouse - suddenly you need the benefits system, but the benefits system you have paid into for years refuses to support that 3rd child. If you/your spouse can’t get a job and don’t have the savings then what do you do with the 3rd child? Are parents in this situation expected put the 3rd child into care? Or are they expected to partially-starve the whole family? Also, this policy is very short-termist, a child who hasn’t enough food to eat will struggle to concentrate in class, get worse grades, find it harder to get a steady job, and be more likely to end-up on benefits (costing the system far more as an adult than they would have as a child).

@@Someone-p2xeither the kid starves (which is thankfully illegal) or someone pays for them. if the parents do not have the means to raise the child themselves (either through work or benefits) then that child is likely to end-up in the care system. In this case not only are you still paying for their food and clothes, but you are also paying strangers hired by the state to provide the childcare that the parents would have provided if they'd been able to afford to keep their child. So not only does this not make sense ethically, it also does not make sense for the taxpayer. It is not even intended to make sense for the taxpayer if the child has already been born, it is intended to discourage parents from having that 3rd child. However, it will only discourage the parents if they are responsible financial planners in the first place and have not already had the 3rd child.

I’m actually relieved Labour have some sense not to abolish the cap. If labour do as they promised, abolishing the cap won’t even be necessary as they aim to cut rents and build social housing. But I do not want to see a return of the 90s benefits families. I remember very well the amount of money and support given to families which never even held down a job. Meanwhile I and my family all worked just to be taxed £300-450 a month. Sometimes I just wish benefits didn’t exist at all. Just a £400 universal basic income that everyone gets under the 20-40% tax bracket.

We have worked full time, 13 hour shifts, all our married lives. We knew we could afford 2 children, and didnt want to have an only child. We had those 2, and they've wanted for nothing. We were right to stop there. Any more would have meant less new clothes, less days out and no holidays, (Childrens lives should be about MORE than just scraping together food, and the very basic necessities). People need to make responsible decisions. I do know people are suddenly taken ill or made redundant. Still, these unknown future issues should be factored into the family planning decisions. NO bad financial issues are aided by having huge families. 2 children is enough, especially in this economic climate.

@@YorickReturns Actually, people are slaves to one another. As a baby, you turned your parents into slaves for your comfort. And, if you were unlucky enough to be born with a debilitating condition, or developed one, that slavery would be for life. And the slavery goes both ways, as people age and become dependent again, they rely on those around them. Are you saying that you would prefer for people to leave dependent people to die in the street? Fortunately, we don’t look upon such work as slavery. But not everyone is fortunate enough to have two professional carers at their beck and call 24 hours a day when they need it. So welfare is our communal way of covering for one another for everyone’s benefit. Of course, there’s nothing to stop you from disappearing into the hills and setting up your own community of one and see how you get on.
