2:52:58 The scene where Anya said "Papa someone is drowning in the pool" and he freaked out and questioned who she was was only in Anya's head. She never actually said that part out loud, she was just imagining how he might react if she was blunt with him. 2:54:25 Small detail from episode five, the castle was refurbished as a theme park, and had no surveillance set up around it, because why would a spy ever infiltrate a *theme park* of all places? In the manga, there was a similar reason, despite it not being a theme park: It's a mostly decrepit castle with little value outside of historical clout, so why waste valuable resources watching something that's little more than a tourist trap? And in both cases, the country sees nothing odd about someone buying out the place for a single night to celebrate their daughter getting into Eden; the school is held in such ridiculously high esteem that a lot of the Forger family's foibles are just taken at face value as the eccentricities of the stupidly-rich elites who would have no problem getting into Eden, while the actual Elites take it as the oddities of the upper-middle class. The Forgers just kinda accidentally set themselves up for success perfectly on the "normal family with an Eden student," and we're all here for it.

Some Anime shows have switched to split seasons due to a variety of reasons, mostly to spread workload across the year better. So they are still 24 episodes per season, but 12+12 with 3 months in between. The advantage is we never have to wait as long. So this wasn't actually the season finale, it was the midseason finale, which in slice of life anime is usually a more fillery style episode. The show will be back after summer and we'll see the second half of season 1 with the actual season finale at the end.

1:32:05 At my American high school, there actually were some of those types of honor society perks. Every so often if students kept their cumulative GPA throughout all years high enough, they got to go to a pizza party of sorts on the roof. You had to rank high enough in your year though. They got out of class for it too. My school called it Purple Feather. I think kids also got to wear capes somewhat similar to that in the show, if again, you did something like got a reward, scholarship, were part of the honor society, etc. I never got anything like that, but I knew a girl back then who was that smart and did all those things. I was never motivated enough to do that well. I was the B student who mostly coasted through school during that time. I could get As and do better sometimes. I got honor roll occasionally, but I was never consistent enough to get Purple Feather or get into the National Honor Society or whatever it was called. That classmate was always so worried about her place in the rankings. She really worked for it every time it came around.

As someone whos worked with kids in settings where, unfortunately, danger can present itself (i taught martial arts, primarily to children) the whole pool/rescue segment hits me so damn hard, every time i see it. Its so viscerally upsetting, in the best way possible. They managed to capture the frantic, intense nature of trying to come to someones rescue, as well as the dread and horror of that someone also being a child (and a child with a disability specifically making the situation worse for them) in such a short amount of time. And then they NAIL the dismount with the reunion between him and his mother, as well as the general air of relief and emotional release in the moment. Im thankful ive never had to pull a child from a situation THAT close to death. But i HAVE had to come to the aid of a child who was hurt and stuck enough to be that scared. And so the whole thing just gives me flashbacks, again in the best way. But i couldnt even IMAGINE the feeling of being a parent watching it.

Yeah, that pool scene hits me quite hard as well. I know how that boy feels cuz I almost drown in a pool when I was a kid, and what Loid said was true, I WAS QUIET during the whole thing. I don't know why I didn't scream for help, I just quietly panic splashing in the middle of the pool trying to stay on the surface until eventually my uncle spotted and save me.
@Acorn_Anomaly
2 жыл бұрын
@@ksuma715 Your body is more focused on getting air than screaming. NOTHING is more important than catching your breath. That's why it can actually be dangerous to rescue someone from drowning if you're not a trained lifeguard that knows how to handle it. They will drag you under and force you to stay there, and drown YOU, trying to catch their own breath. They won't even know they're doing it. If you don't have something for them to grab on to that's not you, it can actually often be safer to either choke them from behind(if you have the strength to do so and still get you both out of the water), or actually LET THEM DROWN until they pass out, so they don't fight you as you rescue them. Drowning is quiet; that's what makes it so horrifying. There have been instances where kids have drowned in a pool literally surrounded by people simply because it looked like they were just splashing around. You have to learn the difference between someone goofing around and someone that's struggling to tread water.

He almost jump from there to try to rescue me. I took all of the parents screaming to let they notice and rescue me. I was 6 years old, happened in first grade and it left me with a trauma to the pool that I didn´t overcome until one year before high school. This episode or that moment, hits me real hard. The first episode sold it for me at 15:00. When Loid said to Anya "Alright, let's go home". Anya raised her head and looked pleased. This is a really good scene. A few seconds ago, Loid thought to himself this girl was abandoned so many times - she had all the different surnames, so it implied she's quite disposable to many people in this country. So, Anya's afraid of being abandoned and sent back to an orphanage again. The adults probably told her "Sure, let's go home", "I won't leave you" but those were lies and excuses before throwing her away. Anya's a mind reader so she knew they were lying. And she had come to terms that it's normal for adults to lie to her. This was also why she doesn't get mad at Loid for lying. But this time, when Loid said "Let's go home", Anya was baffled. This time, an adult doesn't lie to her. This time, an adult actually earnestly wants to bring her to a home. This is new to her but it's a good thing since forever. That's why she looked happy. This time, she has a father that often lies but would be honest with her about not abandoning her. She's not alone anymore. Edit: Fun trivia for you two. The Japanese pronunciation for "Yor" is pronounced "Yoru". "Yoru" means "Night" in Japanese. So, this is a love story between Mr Twilight and Ms Night. Also, in Episode One, it's revealed that Anya was "Test Subject 007" - a reference to James Bond.

To your question at 1:52:00, they both are so overwhelmed dealing with their double/tripple life's that they fail to notice those things about the other. There is also the part that both are war orphans, they have barely any to no experience of what a normal life much less family is. Yor for example started to work as an assassin early in life to be able to earn money to raise her brother.

I just thought I'd mention, but you both keep talking about "which country is the bad one" or "both could be bad." I think an important factor is that Loid's job isn't to destroy Yor's country, but to keep the current peace between them. We don't know for sure yet, but he and Yor could be working for different countries towards the same goal of world peace. Loid isn't trying to hurt Ostania, he's trying to prevent a war.

So for a very mild spoiler: Yor isn't working for a government, but a kind of secret society named Garden, which ostensibly also wants to preserve peace between the two powers. They're kind of a boogieman for the actual government intelligence agencies on both sides, while most people think they're just a weird rumor. (Franky later tells Loid what little he knows about them. His advice is that if Loid ever comes across a Garden operative, he should get the hell out immediately if he wants to live.)

Well, Yuri bits showing how his work in Ostania's Secret Police looks are pretty dark and disturbing. Country deploying such tactics against it's own citizens is not a pleasant place to live. Granted, we do not know how things in Westalia look, so it might be 'gray and grey' morality case.

I've reached the point about how Loid is manipulating Anya and how it's somehow wholesome, and I think what makes it work is Anya's telepathy! From her perspective, she knows what's going one, in fact she knows way more than Loid does, and she still agree to go along with it! If it weren't for that detail, yeah, Loid would come off as quite an a**hole, to be honest...

I think it also works because the show is essentially presenting it as a character flaw. Anyas knowledge makes it palatable, obviously, but the show never expects that to excuse it. It allows it to go from villainry to heroic flaw in a fantastic way.

I dunno... on one hand there's the fact that he does a really stressful job for a living which also turns people into manipulative assholes eventually (certain jobs take a certain type of person to be frank). But then you have to consider that although he's manipulating here chose to save her after considering letting those criminals capture Anya. It helped him remember what he was fighting for, which I can see happening. Doing a job as intense as this one for so long, one would naturally forget their original purpose under all that pressure. So yeah, you may think Loid could have been portrayed as an asshole if Anya wasn't in the equation, but one has to understand that circumstances can turn people into assholes.
@mohdghazali3473
2 жыл бұрын
I disagree, even without Anya telepathy ability, i don't think Loid is an asshole. Cause Loid do show how much he cared for Anya from the very beginning, he always blaming himself when Anya caused trouble or messing up his mission or work as a spy. The fact that he makes an effort to make Anya happy and he's also consider her feelings first before anything else including his own work like in episode 4 where Loid get angry for Anya sake and even defending her despite entering the school is important for the success of his mission, instead he try to figure out on how to accomplish his mission without relying on Anya or blaming Anya even if she messes up his mission. He even comforting Anya that she has no reason to apologise. That's not something that everyone has the capacity to do, especially when related to such an important mission or work. I do agree that Anya telepathic ability do help added the wholesomeness of the show as it's create an interesting wholesome interaction back and forth between Anya, Loid and even Yor but even without Anya telepathic ability, it would still be wholesome to see a spy that risk everything for the sake of peace at the same time, learn about family and how to cared a children.

@@mohdghazali3473 I second this, and that's why, for me, Twilight is just another character of his and not his true self, because he has shown many times that Anya is now his motivation of making a better world (even though its obviously hard for him to admit it because his training as a spy forces this coping mechanism for the attachment he also obviously is experiencing.) Many people tend to miss the fact that Twilight has barely had any control over the mission due to Yor and Anya's funny antics, and that Anya plays a really important role to get to know the kind of people Twilight and Yor are, aside from the WakuWaku she gets from her peculiar parents, she can totally know when a person is bad and episode 1 shows that Anya (and eventually Yor) chosed Twilight for the pinch of sincere truth that was leaked to make the deception rather than the whole deception itself. We shouldn't underestimate Yor and Anya's capabilities to perceive others' feelings, they might not be the sharpest tool in the shed academical wise, but they have high emotional intelligence.

One of the best things about this anime is that there are a lot of (good) anime-only scenes (for example, the whole castle scene only consisted of the fight between Loid and Yor in the manga or the training montage in episode 10 is new). Edit: 3:00:10 I think the "Good day, or perhaps, good evening" is just because his name is Twilight (->he lives on the border between day and night)

I love how you two keep discussing the oxymoron of this show's premise being simultaneously twisted & somewhat dark while also being so wholesome, hilarious, and joyful to watch! The author really knows how to keep us all intrigued and enjoying! I think he's nailed a tone that's reminiscent of how audiences feel about the Addams Family. Like, in how you pause and raise an eyebrow for a sec, but then belly laugh and go "awwww" two seconds later anyway. This whole premise is a spy/political drama parody, and usually such a setting would either have more edgy characterization and a more cynical humour style. Or lean far enough into the comedy that there's nothing serious about the characters themselves. But there's a special earnest way that the characters & their relationships are presented, and also in how the absurdist parody humour is delivered. It keeps us from getting too cynical or desensitized to the characters' feelings while we're watching. It's amazing.

That moment when Twilight essentially was about to snap Swan's neck like so many dry twigs (seriously, that level of kinetic force ABSOLUTELY would kill a man if it was enough to break an Oak Coffee Table), that moment I like as that was Twilight deciding, at that moment, that his family meant more than the mission before finally snapping back into discipline (still mad but not about to completely destroy his cover along with potentially failing the mission) and redirecting.

The whole thing about absolutely needing both parents to attend Eden and how unmarried women are suspicious isn't actually as weird as you think. Keep in mind, the show is set in like, an analogue to the 1950s, so things were much more traditional and conservative back then. Eden in particular is an institution catering to the upper class, meaning it's going to be even MORE conservative than society at large. Also, you're thinking about the countries in terms of one being good and the other being bad... That's not how real nations are. One might be 'better' than the other, but overall, they're both just nations, both are playing spy games with one another and as this is basically the 1950s, both probably have a stockpile of nukes and are just WAITING for the other side to give them an excuse to use them! The 'State Security Service' in the show is basically just the East German Stazi during the Cold War, while Loid seems to be working for the equivalent of the CIA. Neither side is above kidnapping, murder, blackmail or anything else to get the upper hand, it's just that one has better PR than the other.

@@leobriccocola8141 In Europe and more especially Germany, YES, OF COURSE. Before 1955 Germany was demilitarized, disarmed and occupied, only afterwards the West became part of NATO, i.e. of the West, The (west) European Communities started in the 50's, the border was not really closed yet and between 1949 and 1961 a million Ossies emigrated to the West until the Berlin Wall was built in the late summer/early fall of 1961, the Cold War became more serious in the '50's, the space race started in 1957, the Pact of Warsaw came into being in 1955, and so on, so the 50's were at least when looking at Cold War Germany a much more dynamic era, in which Germany became parts of East and West, compared to the 60's in which the Cold War sides were more or less stable teams. NATO got no new members between West-Germany and Spain in the 1980's... The 60's in Cold War Germany was a relatively stable period to be used as a blue-print for a setting for your own stories, while in the 1950's things were changing a lot.

The dog's introduction here in season 1 is supposed to be a teaser for the next season (Season 2 is already greenlit, but was put on hold due to the pandemic). To be fair, the dog's whole story is a huge arc (it's already completed in the manga), and, though it would make for an amazing season finale, they wouldn't have been able to fit it all in a single episode. So, they threw in one of the many "mini stories" that are sprinkled throughout the manga as a sort of 'light filler' - something that can be wrapped up quickly, with minimal effect on the overarching plot - and they used that as the season finale. That being said, the story for this is really well written, so elements from episode 12 (like Anya's giant stuffed penguin or the fact that Loid has been working overtime due to the Secret Police's crackdowns) do come back later in a big way.

The Mangaka has talked about how he made this series because he was in a slump, and so he took on a work utilizing characters that he isn't a big fan of. It's pretty sad too because he's drawing and doing what he doesn't want to in order to make money. Though hopefully this means in the future after this series is done he can go back to doing what he wants, and more people will pay attention.

It reginited his passion and he fell in love with the short clips of life in odd situations. He wrote 2 spy like mangas before this. but they were a bit dark, funny, but didnt sell as well. His editor told him that the subject wasnt the problem it was that he was a bit too dark in his situations and to try being more lighthearted. He has and it has become a sucess.
