Hahaha. Touché. Although, I will say this - it's still a matter of opinion. I'd argue a new photographer wouldn't even be able to separate out good and bad glass with a lens chart. Kit lenses are designed for these people because they just care that the lens doesn't require them to remortgage their home.

It does matter for still photography if you're shooting fast action that closes in forcing you to zoom. Try shooting an F-18 at an airshow with a 70-300 as it does a fast fly by. Even fast focusing varifocal glass attached to a fast focusing camera body is going to miss focus for many/most of the shots as the aircraft closes.

Nice video but you really should look into accurate backfocus. The Fuji MK lens has a backfocus adjuster to ensure the FFD can be moved. Still lenses don't have this and rely on accurate FFD which is usually the case with a native EF/Nikon etc mount like a 5D. Your setup consists of a Sony FS7, a third party lens adapter and EF glass made by various manufacturers..... to think the FFD in this scenario will always be accurate is tad ignorant. Pick up or test the MC-11 adapter made by Sigma with your 70-200, you'll see it holds focus through the range. No lens is actually truly parfocal, the test is how much the FFD shifts during the zoom, all lenses shift but if they stay within a pre defined tolerance level (something like + or - 5 microns) they're considered Parfocal. I understand that not all lenses can be classified as Parfocal but I think your video was trying to show that holding focus throughout the range is the reason to pick a parfocal lens, so maybe you should look into backfocus, accurate FFD and look at how many still zoom lenses hold focus trough the range. I think you will be shocked at how many can do that. Have a look on my channel, I have a few videos regarding this, even a lowly Tamron or Sigma 17-50 F2.8 is parfocal or "hold focus through the range" when used on a native EF/Nikon etc mount or via an adapter with accurate backfocus. Sorry to be so blunt, we've actually talked on FB and I like your content but in this regard you're kind of skipping the very practice that any TV camera op would know, most news studios have a Siemens star chart somewhere to calibrate backfocus because there has always been the functionality to do so, with Cine lenses we often have to do the same via shims or a mechanical adjacent of the PL mount. It's all about backfocus mate.

Can you recommand affordable parfocal zoom lenses for the GH5 camera (aside the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8), please ? Thanks to answer

Hi Michel. To be perfectly honest, if the Sigma is as good as they say - then I think that's you're only choice. True parfocal cinema lenses will all be quite expensive compared to the cost of a GH5.

Gentlemen! Nice video. While I appreciate the presentation and information you're presenting - you are presenting a misconception here. Although both the continuous focus capability of a zoom lens (parfocal) and reduction of magnification change over the course of a focus change (breathing) can be fixed with the introduction of "floating" compensation elements within the lens - the two issues are NOT NECESSARILY directly intertwined. Breathing is a separate issue from creating a parfocal zoom (which is generally fixed by moving the position of the focal group of the lens away from forward or rear position). There are plenty of parfocal zoom lenses that have SUBSTANTIAL breathing. The fact that Fujifilm worked to correct both continuous focus and eliminated magnification change upon focus does not mean that one begets the other. Additionally there is a lot of glass designed for still cameras, EF mounts in particular, that ARE parfocal. It's possible to infer from your presentation that all EF lenses are not - and that just isn't the case.

Thanks for your comment! We appreciate your thorough explanation but perhaps you're mixing up varifocal and parfocal. As we stated, EF still lenses are varifocal, while cinema lenses are parfocal. Also, when presenting information like this, it's best to be to-the-point and scrape out any information that is overly technical. The general KZitem audience will not watch a 30 minute technical lens lecture. I hope that explains our approach. Thanks again!

Yikes. You are absolutely correct - I wrote that distracted and too fast. I corrected. Aside from my semantic faux pas (which is embarrassing) your video makes a direct connection between the parfocal correction in the MK 18-55 and the correction of focus breathing - and there isn't necessarily a direct connection between the two. Although I understand the need for simplifying issues and brevity - the direct connection is a misrepresentation that can steer people in the wrong direction.

Ha. Happens to the best of us. I should point out that we're not so much as making the connection between the two concepts as we are simply describing the symptoms, related or not. Again, it's worth pointing out that diving deeper into this topic is far outside the intended scope of this video. But it's great that folks like yourself take the time to comment and express their views - so that others can get than information if they're looking for it. Thanks again!

Hella Adakin Productions. Can you recommand affordable parfocal zoom lenses for the GH5 camera (aside the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8), please ? I've been looking for a lot ot those, but no real luck, except for some vintage lenses like the Navitar 18-180mm f/2.5. Thanks to answer

All my video is out door and 99% is R/C model airplanes. Purchaced a Canon T5i (PLZ don't laugh) to do video. What a mistake got so frustrated that things go out of focus any time I zoom I went back to my Canon LX-1 then because it's not HD & Tape based bought a Canon XA-30. Not the gratest compared to my XL-1 but works. Wish some one made a video camera (HD 1018P 6fps) that had pistol grip like DSLR's or my old Canon A1. What price (low) are we speaking of for a parfocal lens for DSLR's
