The look on Woodward's eyes... she really captures that mesmerized look. Perhaps, because they're both had married by then.

From IMDb - Paul Newman was coached in playing the trombone by Billy Byers while the playing for Newman on the soundtrack was done by Murray McEachern. Sidney Poitier's tenor sax playing was done by Paul Gonsalves. The soundtrack was recorded May 1-3, 1961 at Reeves Sound Studios in New York City.

They showed this movie yesterday (Tuesday, August 16) on Turner Classic Movies. I caught the last half of it, and the timing was just perfect. I watched this instead of that trashy Jerry Springer and Maury. What a great movie! I hope they show it again.

Who plays the trombone here? Lawrence Brown? Britt Woodman? I seem to hear Paul Gonsalves murmurring in the background and the pianist sounds like Billy Strayhorn. The atmosphere of the Paris of the 60s is captured very well.

I'm thinking that it's Lawrence Brown, just based on the vibrato. In any case, it's absurdly beautiful playing.

Duke Ellington was involved. I read that it was Juan Tirol. Up he is not credited.

Every woman in that audience had eyes only for Newman-and it’s not hard at all to see why. And I’d lay odds none of them were acting

That's probably very true, but only one woman knew she was heading home with him every night after filming cut, and that's the Joanne. Not many women can say they were their husband's leading lady/love interest in a movie as well as in real life, of course😉

I’m sure many of them did - and probably more than a few had eyes for Sidney too.

Trombone players don't pop the mouthpiece with their hand. It makes it hard to get the darn thing out when you're trying to put it away.
