The military knew, at the time, that this was going to be a war unlike any other. If they had not filmed and documented this war, people TODAY would not believe what went on. They would be saying that we're all lying, making up stories....the Germans didn't kill millions of jews at concentration camps, etc...... The films prove what happened and they show all the horrors of war that today's youth would deny ever happened.

And, despite everybody understand that mostly all of them were ordinary people involved in a war from which they would not get no profit, these are the rules of the war, even if not written in the Geneva convention. In fact, they had better chance to be hit by French than to be slew by the Soviets. Many in modern Russia, where I currently live, still remember Germany, and its atrocities. The French government surrendered the capital as the Germans swept through France in 1940. It was declared an 'open city' meaning it would not be defended. The French government evacuated south to Bordeaux, thereby preserving Paris and it's historic sites and art museums. Warsaw, the capital of Poland was hammered by the Germans, though the Poles fought valiantly in it's defense. Also, the Nazi's considered the Poles, as Slavic people to be 'sub-human'.

Yes, Paris has never been a battle theatre. However, when the Allies landed and succesfully reoccupied western coasts and cities, Hitler ordered the complete destruction of Paris as he understood he was going to lose the war. The Paris nazi commander, who felt in love with the capital, never respected that order.
@brozjoszip6401
3 жыл бұрын
I felt exactly the same. Paris looks untouched compared to Warsaw and Budapest. When it comes to destruction (does not matter which side you talk about) there is a common understanding in the west how Western countries consider Eastern Europe. Yeah. This is a special understanding of democratism and humanism saying those are different. That one of the reasons why noone in France and in the West really felt the enourmous need to liberate East from the German and later from Soviet occupation. They were not so eager to help East in 1956, in 1968 and later in 1981.
@bebased1785

Paris has been set to rubble many more times than Warsaw ever had. I mean look at the Franco Prussian war where Paris was sieged and absolutely ruined costing 100s of millions to repair. The French couldn’t afford to let Paris get put to the sword once again.

@@brozjoszip6401 I would suggest you do a bit of research/reading on the politics in play in the 30's/40's/50's regarding central and eastern Europe. Don't forget Hungary was allied with the fascists during WWII. WWII in the European theatre was exactly to liberate all of Europe from the Nazi occupation. Recall the Soviets became allies of the western democracies, and so did liberate eastern and central Europe from the Nazis. Yes, there was a good bit of deal making between the US and USSR in '56, with the Russians agreeing to let the US deal with the Suez crisis, and the US agreeing to let USSR deal with Hungarian uprising. The Russian and their satellite nations invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 created outrage globally but in the end no one was willing to light the fuse to a nuclear WWIII.

The French were still fighting near the Maginot Line when Hitler was walking into Paris in 1940. French pilots took part in the battle of England in 1940. French pilots fought alongside the Russians in 1942 : Normandie Niemen. French fought with the allies in Northern Africa. Without the french resistance, which wasn't completely a myth, Operation Overlord could never have taken place. They were also very efficient in delaying SS divisions on their way to Normandy. Commando Kieffer took part to the D-Day landings. In 1945, the French were the fourth-largest allied army in Europe and took part in the allied invasion of Germany.

Which is where cercie’s walk of shame from GOT was inspired by. Many women didn’t have a choice... the French didn’t do a good enough job defending their country and women when they invaded, yet took out their frustrations of the occupation on them. Most of the resistance weren’t even around to have proof of what the women did and took rumors as if they were facts.

if they were cowardly they wouldn't fight for 6 years all over Europe. here, what can be seen is the end of the war, everyone had enough, but if they deserted their own, they would be destroyed in such a situation without a solution. and what would you do to spit on a Frenchman? American for the price of a ball? did he prefer to drop his head and go home?

Things were better in France during the occupation then when the Allies came in.Allot of crime and rapes my uncle said. You can't talk about that, but he said it's true.

@@mikestevenson2303 I can’t remember the exact figures but allied soldiers eventually out numbered the axis about 8 - 1 in France in 1944 so yes there were probably more allied rapes. Coupled with combat destruction and the allied bombing of places like Caen probably contributed to a more negative perception of the allies.

@@jackkruese4258 Yes, if a German soldier did that they were taken out and shot. Here is a thing on Google that you can type in. It says US soldiers were reported committing rape against French women during and after the liberation of France in the latter stages of WW2. The sociologist J. Robert Lilly of the Northern Kentucky University estimates around 3,500 rapes in France between June 1944 and the end of the war. Also, during the invasion CBS Eric Sevareid, said American (not British) soldiers were shooting German prisoners left and right (like in Private Ryan). He got in trouble with this report and had to stop saying that. Even though he always says that report was true. Point is, war goes both ways.

@@mikestevenson2303 Germany might have treated crimes by their soldiers in a more ruthless manner than the allies in France and the west but I doubt they’d have done so on the eastern front in the latter part of the war, especially after they’d starting losing. There was a Documentary I saw in which there had been a German investigation into why American but not British soldiers killed German concentration camp guards and the reasons why both nationalities had acted differently under similar circumstances. Though in reference to your first point France does not have good memories of the Second World War, for obvious reasons, so french sensitivity might play a part in painting their liberators in a less positive light.

I noticed the French gendarmes acting like they they had the moral high ground over the German prisoners. People should not forget the efficiency with which they forced French citizens and Jews unto the trains heading back to Germany.
