The reason you have to go through gates to access the train is due to fare doggers. There used to be a real problem with people boarding the train without a ticket and then giving incorrect details as to their identity... and even if the inspector was able to kick them out at the first stop, they had already crossed half of the country by then... the situation has gone much better since the introduction of the gates.

This is my favourite train journey in Europe. I live about 40 minutes SW of Barcelona, and spent the last weekend of August in Perpinyà (El centre del món .< I kinda want to go visit Disneyland in Neem now... xD The food en borde is deffo nowhere near as good as it was pre-covid. I worked in Paris for 3 months in 2016, and they were offering hot food trays, and this seems to have fallen to the unstoppable march of progress. Oh, *the sofa between the carriages is so people go there to use their phones rather than irritating the heck out of everyone in the coach proper.* Also, I can't stand the lower deck because of the fact there's no rear exit. :/ I do love visiting the South-East of France, but yeah, the last couple of months it's been 10C higher than even Barcelona, it's nuts how hot it is there compared to nearby places. Oh, there are 4 trains a day in either direction now. I wonder if that changed in the last month or so? Also, bugger, I really don't want the Renfesensayef offering to end, I've been on the Ouitrains and the iryo inside Spain, and also the TGV Proper in France, and I have a feeling that if SNCF take over the full route, it'll be bumped over to be more like Ouitrain than the current ones. :/ That said, the Ouitrains are great when it comes to cost-effectiveness for in-Spain travel, as is iryo, so maybe I'm just worrying needlessly? I mean, SNCF's high-speed offerings in France are great, sooo... *shrug kaomoji here* I'm guessing you're here to try out iryo and Ouitrain, so if you come back via Barcelona, or if you come back this way, you should deffo organise a meet-up somewhere in town. ^^

I have been to Narbonne a couple of times, most recently a month ago. I travel by train from the middle of the UK and then via EuroStar to Paris Gare du Nord and then by metro to Gare de Lyons. The contrast between train services is stark (when UK trains are not on strike). SNCF and TER services are always on time, very clean and comfortable, very good value for money and the entire system is so easy to use (using the SNCF app to book tickets). I just hope they don't change the system or make it more expensive. If you get the opportunity try cycling alongside the Canal de la Robine from the centre of Narbonne either to Gruissan or Port-La_Nouvelle. You might be able to get a closer look at those flamingoes.

I precisely love the lower deck *because* they are dead ends : virtually no passengers passing by your seat, you can sleep or work undisturbed for hours with barely any movement around you. Every single lower deck cabin is a dead end where the ambiance is quiet and cozy. Plus, there's more room for luggage there. While on the other hand, upper level cabins can see half the train passing by your seat, especially if you're in the cars adjacent to the bar (because inter-carriage gangways are exclusively on the upper deck). One other asset of the lower deck on top of more room for luggage is luggage "safety" : the position of the luggage racks at the very end of the lower deck cabins, opposite from the only entry point makes it extremely difficult for wannabe opportunistic thieves. A thief would have to enter the cabin, go up to the dead end racks, rummage through the luggage and then walk back again in front of passengers who know he's not seated in this cabin. When traveling with sports gear, or other equipment worth stealing., that's peace of mind. Each lower deck cabin is a small, cozy and isolated community that doesn't see much visitors. It feels almost like a private cabin.

Great video. You mentioned "quaint French villages". The video sequence you showed at the point is that of the remains of the famous Cluny Abbey in Burgundy. It was before the French revolution the second largest church after St Peter's in Rome. The revolution destroyed part of it. The surrounding farmers took a lot of the abbey stones to build their housing and farms. As a Frenchman (living in the US), I have done the Paris-Lyon-Marseille route both in traditional trains and then in TGVs multiples times. I also did the line through Nîmes, Montpellier, Narboone (going on to Carcassonne, Toulouse etc.) many many times. People may disagree with me but I think with the TGV we gained in speed what we lost in comfort.I remember the first 'Trains Corails" who were extremely comfortable even in second class, were more refined in many ways, and had for most of them a real dining car, which was very nice. I simply don't understand the concept of that "bar area", overcrowded and small. It was assumed since the beginning that the emphasis had to be put on speed and that therefore travelers were using the high speed train for speed and not for slow leisure! I think with domestic lines now opened to competition, it will force the SNCF to up the standards a little bit and rethink for example the dining situation. Lucas Fouchier is correct in mentioning that those small couches are indeed for using cell phones. Unfortunately, since seat reservation is not required in some TGVs, people not finding a seat in peak period will use those seats and anything else they can seat on.

@@SuperalbsTravels It has happened to me a few times (I am talking about 8-9 years ago) to get into an overcrowded TGV from Marseile to Paris where many people were standing , especially near the doors, near the luggage racks, and sitting on anything they could sit on. I was astonished at the time, since it was my understanding that getting into a TGV always required a reservation. On the other hand, I once got into a TGV from Marseille to Paris which broke down (which is rare) between Marseille and Valence (if I remember correctly). We had to go to the station and wait for another TGV which was coming from Montpellier, and which was a shorter set. We all had to cram into that TGV, with no reservations of course... I remember doing the rest of the trip standing up nears the door. Not fun. Maybe this is no longer the case and you cannot get into a TGV without a reservation. I have not taken it in at least 5-6 years.

Patrick, the two-seater has a overhead sign that reads "unplug", it could be just to try to remind people for doing just that but also because that area might be for waiting for a vacant restroom etc, although we can clearly see two wall plugs above the seats. I agree that SNCF's speed concept has gave in to a less comfortable experience. I too remember older trains and how comfortable they were. I also took the Amtrak in California for a 9hour journey and it was great! I used to live in Villefranche (north of Lyon) and would take the TGV to Paris once in a while back in the day and it was pretty comfy back then but nothing like the Corails or else, or Amtrak... Cost might be an issue as they have to prioritize funding/financing special tracks, catenaires hmm catenary? etc. Special equipment for running high speed trains is what I mean.

Hopefully with SNCF splitting their high speed service into a fully 2nd class OuiGo and a more classic InOui newly built trains will have interiors more catering to their respective services. Now and before TGVs always had this odd mix of both catering to high paying business travellers as well as low paying tourists, ultimately serving neither fully because the service was lacking for first class (no fully sit down dining car, for example, as you mentioned) and neither to the low cost traveller (because it was, and is, still expensive).

Don't expect sit down dining car... I'll be very surprised if it ever happens as it was always deemed incompatible with French food and dining culture. Put seats and tables somewhere and French people will hog them for hours whether you serve food or not. If you serve meals, small groups will take small dishes and drink coffee for hours... And whatever you serve, some will bring their own food to colonize the tables. Particularly on holiday destination services, like Montpellier or Marseille from spring to autumn, if you'd put tables and seats, you would see the same people hogging the tables for a good part of the 3h ride. And good luck to enforce a time limit...! They sometimes already have to "police" the bar car, painstakingly and ineffectively asking people to free up space and go back to their seats after a period of time on crowded summer trains... Putting tables and seating is asking for trouble ! That's the main reason there are no sit down dining car on TGV's. Just compare a restaurant in France to virtually anywhere else : services are much, much longer, catering to fewer people. It can work on a full restaurant, but I doubt it would as a limited seating train car. They'll maybe try but I'd be surprised if it worked and they kept it. Or they would need much much larger "restaurant car", packed on weekends and holidays, 3/4 empty on weekdays more business oriented services. Not really as versatile as a bar car...

@@davidperry7128 I am French... And yes French people hog tables, it's part of the culture OK, but it's a bit extreme sometimes. I didn't express any judgment in my previous comment though, but I will in this one : it can often be way over-the-top! I have memories of 3+ hours long lunches and the desperate look on the restaurant's personnel. Or of waiters discretely praying for clients to leave the restaurant because they were supposed to have closed for the night 1 or 2 hours ago. There's a middle ground between the revolving doors / slingshot meals of some American restaurants and the 4 hour long table hogging in some French restaurants. Apart from a few select types of restaurants like specialized high-volume brasseries like Parisian "bouillons" where there's a tacit rule of no lingering stay, or some restaurants where most of the table / seating area is reserved for meals only ; French people have the habit of occupying tables way too long. It's fun once in a while but when every single client you invite to the restaurant clings on you and the table for 2 to 4 hours, or when every family dinner / lunch also takes hours ; it becomes really exhausting and bothersome. This habit tends to reduce / become more reasonable in France with the younger generations. Anyway, I'm probably a bad Frenchman : I don't eat meat, I'm allergic to mushrooms (black truffle smells like rotten damp laundry to me), I hate strong cheeses, I abhor giblets and don't drink any alcohol at all...

Also it avoids people from getting on the wrong track, or worst in the wrong train, as there might be hundred of km before the next stop. Finally its a great mesure against thieves, some would go on the train, grab any luggage and leave just before the train start so no one can follow them. If they try to do that they'll be catched by the security when trying to leave. Its impossible to check every luggage like in an airport, so the ticket verification is one of the only things they can do.

Thank you for a great video. Whilst I am a huge fan of the SNCF TGV Duplex, especially in 1st Class, sadly SNCF have downgraded their on board catering to a very low standard. For such a long route as Paris to Barcelona, there should be full restaurant facilities. The last time I was at the Gare de Lyon was in 1991 and I was waiting for my friend who was coming in on a TGV from Geneva. In those days you could walk right out to the platforms. There were newspaper vending machines near the platforms, and I looked at them and saw the headline: "Gorbachev overthrown by conservatives". It was the August 1991 coup (which failed a few days later, starting the chain of events that led to the dissolution of the USSR) and that was how I learned about it. I've associated the moment with that place ever since.

A fascinating look at a trip that I, my wife and granddaughter did partially - in the other direction - from Nice to Paris this past August. We overlapped from around Avignon to Paris but the train was essentially the same. The catering was not as good as I expected (we were also in 1st class upstairs) and I had rather hoped for more than a self-service stand-up café. I agree that by the look of it the Paris-Barcelona run was a bit below-par for a premium international route and we forget that the line is not always TGV speed (it took us four hours from Nice to Marseille). What is surprising is that when travelling in excess of 300kph you don't really sense the speed.

There are a couple of cities like that in France: near impossible to connect to the high speed train system, notably Nice and Brest in Brittany, too. Geographical issues. But there is an international airport in Nice, people just fly to there and Monte Carlo, you know.

French trains are appalling. The attitude of French and Spanish operators towards interrail passes is transparent. They use "reservation fees" to keep "riff raff" off their high speed trains. France and Spain thereby benefit from being in the interrail network but shoulder no responsibility. Compare and contrasts with Great Britain or Germany. I am a fluent french speaker. I have tried over and over again to use the SNCF reservation system. I would like to travel to Spain from Germany by train (with my family). I am unable to find trains on many calendar days. They simply do not show up in the offers which are presented like airline fares would be. Or they are ludicrously expensive, even months in advance. Compare and contrast to DB (Germany) or even GB. DB will show all available trains for a given service. You can compare to a timetable and see they all appear. Every single option. Booking with DB is incredibly easy. Fares are presented clearly. All options are offered at the end, including often cheap upgrades to 1st class. Even GB is better. We used interrail in GB as a family this summer. We had no problems whatsoever, even travelling on a rail strike day. We need integrated rail systems in Europe. We've had the EU for 70 years, and a large enough EU to develop proper, integrated cross border rail transport for 50 of those. Instead, long distance rail transport is more difficult and worse now than it was 100 years ago. A large part of the reason for this are intransigent national rail systems like those of France and Spain. And a completely useless EU that actively makes rail transport worse, not better, by foisting privatisation on national networks.

I agree on your assessment of the rotten attitude by these companies. They really are out of control...
@winstoncat6785
2 жыл бұрын
@@SuperalbsTravels thanks for the report on the cross border service. And for pointing out how inadequate it is. Regarding "reservation fees" on RENFE and SNCF. They are "per journey segment" and cumulative. So as a family of 4, here is how Germany- Alicante would work. Outward: 4*€30 Paris-Barcelona. 4*€30 Barcelona-Alicante. Return 4*€30 Alicante-Barcelona. 4*€30 Barcelona-Paris. A total of €500 in "reservation fees" - now buy your ticket. Cheapest interrail on top of that is a 4 day one @€400 I think. Then, enjoy actually reserving a seat on the service you want to travel on - now only possible after buying the interrail pass and I guess if they then tell you "no space on that service" it's your problem. The glaring issue is the elimination of through ticketing. They treat each high speed service as a separate unit. Contrast with DB. If I go from where I live to Zürich, Luzern or Interlaken, I pay for one reserved seat. I may take 3 different ICE's getting there but it's 1 journey. For interrail, I can choose to reserve or not. But the biggest issue of all is the lack of cooperation of the French network in particular with its neighbours. There need to be fair-priced, trans-european tickets on offer, treating EU railways, rightly, as a single network. Common rules for pricing. No national exceptions. The EU has completely failed the public on this issue. It is one place where the EU would have jurisdiction and the power to act and enforce. Instead, they used their control to force privatisation wherever possible onto Europe's railways.

You know what's funny ? When travelers suggest that french trains are lame, the SNCF and its operators respond "If you're not happy, go see the service in the UK and you'll realise we're so good". Very useful answer indeed... Half of the population can't afford to travel with trains anymore, including me, and the ones who can complain constantly. But nobody seems preoccupied at the SNCF, probably because the money keeps coming to them...

I got to say, I'm not to fond of the Duplex. Boarding takes forever because of the few door, the lower deck is extremely claustrophobic and, most importantly, the trains are not built pressure-proof, which makes traveling on routes with many tunnels (like the TGV Atlantique) extremely uncomfortable, because you have constant pressure on your ears when it passes a tunnel. That's something never had in any other European HSR.

A disgraceful pile of very badly designed, modern "double deck cattle market commercial rip off junk". Very similar in many ways to that other modern heap of commercial filth the "bucket market airline". I once made the mistake of getting on one of these bits of motorised scrap metal, from Strasbourg to the south of France, but I got off at the first stop Dijon. I was appalled at the vibration, coming through the wafer thin seat cushion. The fact that when you stood up in the cramped seat you bashed your head on the underside of an airline type luggage rack, and when you went to find the catering facilities you had to go up and down numerous flights of stairs, only to find the catering car closed. Indeed the most comfortable seat in the train turned out to be the toilet seat, simply because the vibration next to the articulated bogie was far less, because the floor was unable to flex as much at the more rigid end of the vehicle ! As a Railway Mechanical Engineer I was disgusted that either the train was in serious need of maintenance, or the French designer should be taken out and Guillotined, for designing such a cheap and nasty interior layout. Clearly designed to pack people in like Sardines. So I continued my journey south in a much more comfortable and relaxing fast train formed of a electric locomotive and 1980's Corail airconditioned and properly sprung coaches. I had a complete compartment all to myself, a beautifully smooth ride, big panoramic windows and a properly made sprung seat cushion & seat back. I shall NEVER ever board another TGV of ANY type. Indeed this train only arrived around 90mins after the ghastly TGV.

A few years ago, did London-Paris-Barcelona by train in 1 day, including a recommended stop for lunch at Le Train Bleu. The Paris-Barcelona service was still quite new in those days. The train itself was OK, quite busy, the double deck something of a novelty. Scenically, the most interesting part of the journey was the ride along the Mediterranean coast. I was surprised by the scale of the vineyards and how run-down and graffitti-splattered were many of the towns and villages. Arrival into Barcelona-Sants was on time.
