So you also need nearly 6 hours to fly.

@petera7403

@@scotttild Scott- Our trains ARE slow, by modern standards. Amtrak's typical top speed is about 85 mph. That's slow, in this day and age, compared to Europe, regardless of the distances involved. There are several corridors in the United States that would benefit greatly from true high speed rail. High speed rail is not something that works if it's only done halfway. An example of halfway is the current Northeast Corridor between Boston and Washington. Amtrak has spent decades making incremental improvements at huge expense that have yielded only slightly faster schedules, overall. In large part, halfway is because we have not been willing to step up to the plate and really revise things. If the NE Corridor were on a par with the European approach, there'd be grass growing at some of the airports. So, San Fransisco to LA? If it's done properly people will use it, and many more than you may imagine. And those passengers would go from downtown to downtown, without driving to the airport, parking, going to the terminal and going through security. It feels like you are floating in the air thats how smooth it is. I tried to speak French but was treated poorly by the haughty waiter. He even refused to bring me the (French) menu, which I would've had no problem reading, I was forced to choose from only three items on an English menu.The waiter's surly attitude and the limited menu made the experience truly disappointing. Some TGV routes do have complimentary meal service in first class - the "Lyria" routes to Dijon/Basel, for example
@nviewroyroyce

Not 100% sure but I think some of the Lyria have been changed to 3 classes... and there is no meal service for the lower priced first class(standard 1ère).

TGV Lyria is much like Thalys or Eurostar, daughter companies of SNCF and one or more other railway carriers which are distinct from SNCF proper, own management and policies included. The TGV to Italy was similar, I believe, until Trenitalia got out of the cooperation. It's since rum by SNCF alone.

That's a beautiful journey -- I took the same train myself in the summer of 1998. Absolutely unforgettable. This was just before the creation of the Eurozone. When I arrived in Milan, the currency exchange had closed for the evening, and I hadn't thought to change my francs for lire before leaving. Oops.

I took the afternoon train at the end of April. Fabulous scenery. I went to Turin to sleep as it was so late and went the next morning onto Venice. Came back to Paris on Thello.

The TGV trains are very interesting! And looking at the interior, the trains are absolutely beautiful inside! It would be awesome to take the train to Paris or other destinations one day! Awesome review!

Have you ever been in a German ICE?

I have, Amsterdam to Hannover, in a 6 seater compartment, which we had to ourselves for most of the journey. Apart from the air con not working very well, it was a great trip. Would happily do it again - cheap too, 99 Euros for 2 adults 2 children iirc.

AMS to HAN was likely the IC, not the ICE, which has few compartments. The IC stock is often much older and somewhat more tired, but I quite like them. ICE are EMUs, except with the older ones which have an integrated locomotive on either end, much like TGV. Personally, I prefer ICE, especially in second class, although they are much more boring with grey and blue interiors. In first, it's about equal. The best European TGVs are in Spain imo. Too bad they are run by Renfe which is not the most customer oriented company...

I really enjoyed this video, Paul. There’s nothing quite like a train journey. This summer, I’m off to Switzerland with the family and taking the train from Zurich airport to Grindelwald where we are staying. It’s ridiculously scenic there and my 9 year old son wants to emulate you and do lots of filming on the trains (and cable cars etc)... hopefully we will get up the Jungfrau too!

Paris-Milano by train is a wonderful voyage. I liked how you described your journey, indeed Paris-Milano TGV is a combination of a High speed train (Paris > Lyon), of a local train (Lyon to Torino) and of an IC train (Torino to Milano). Thank you.

High speed rail: like flying without wheels up. The Alpine scenery was nice, too (I am a master of understatement). I'm going to have to watch this again on the big flat screen.

Well that's on the bucket list! Great value if you're not strapped for time, I find that France is particularly devoid of low cost air travel for its size so to see good value train fares is very welcome. Love the shot of the oul lads out getting 'fresh air'. 😂😂

Compared to Japan's Shinkansen's first class this is more like diesel train in a third-world country but on a pricier side.

Thanks for this very informative and interesting video. Everyone travelling from here My that was a cheap ticket! I love Gare de Lyon railway station and the food options are pretty good, my favourite is Paul's, the baguettes are great! Really looking forward to being able to travel to Italy by train once again much more relaxing than air travel.

Thanks for the great video. I think the travel time is pretty good considering you lose 4 hours for airport transfer, check-in etc.
