These are very good at clamping down on the cable - almost too good. I find if you screw out the barrel adjuster on the break a few turns, then set them up as show when you're finished you can screw the adjuster back in and get the perfect clearance between the rim and pad :)

I have a similar tool in my tool box and I have to say that it probably is a tool you do not need. But if you have it, it makes life so much easier. While it works great on the cables on a road bike, I still have some struggles on V brakes. Pro tip: You can also use the tool to tighten Zip ties.

I'd like to see how you use it on a front derailleur; brakes are pretty easy, but the front derailleur would be a true test of the functionality of the tool.

Hiya Shane....also works well for derailleur cables. Many thanks...just watched Calvin walk me through brake adjustment as I was having issues with rear brake rub when climbing/accelerating. As I have the very same Hunt wheels (actually the "big boy" versions), I was fairly certain that the wheels weren't flexing so much as to create friction.

@@jeffbrunton3291 Yes it locks, it looks identical in terms of function, Park Took is certainly most robust and well made, but costs a lot more, I would say it is over-engineered for what it is used for, pulling a cable tight 😀, I have lots of Park Tool stuff, but I couldn't see why I needed to pay a premium for this tool.

If.you don't.have this tool another method I've used is a plastic jaw quick release clams to close the caliper, pads to the rim, then I undo the cable nut then the adjuster, wind all.The way.in.then.back out 3 full turns. Pull the cable taught with.pliers and tighten the cable.nut whilst holding cable tension. Release the clamp.and wind the adjuster in until the pads move away from the rim.

You can improve the usebility buy putting a rubber band between the small tab on the locking thingy and the upper rivet which the spring attaches to. it makes the tool self locking and less fiddly.

As Lama says, they're not exactly "Essential", but once you own one, you'll wonder how you did things without them. That said, they're still a touch finicky (getting them in place and to "stick" can involve a certain amount of swearing), but well worth the effort of learning to use properly.

Fair play. I missed 20 years of riding due to a massive crash years ago. Started back on XCM MTB with discs and recently introduced a road bike to the collection. Hydraulic disc brakes are so much better at braking. Maybe they need to find a way to encase them to make them safe in a group crash situation? They could definately start making them smaller than the rear discs on my XC rig. Lots of worms in that can.✌
