This is how a how-to video should be done. Clear and simple explanations on how handbrakes work, why they can fail, and how to adjust them. Great camera work, and clear audio also set this video apart from others. Fantastic job !

Dude the way you explained everything was super easy to understand and actually helped a lot! my friend and I were replacing a stud and accidentally hit that cog but didn't know what it was, put everything back together and then the e brake didn't work. found your video and immediately understood how to fix it. appreciate the help and keep up the good content!

Your never supposed to adjust the Emergency brake from the cable the proper way to adjust it is in the brake drum, theres a hole where you stick a flat head screw driver and adjust it from there, adjusting it from the cable will eventually cause the cable to break.

One question. Is the brake lever pulled into the up position (parking brake engaged) or should it be put into the down position (parking brake disengaged) when tightening the adjuster for the cable?

he put it up to adjust, since that’s the tightest it would be

Did you happen to do a video on replacing the parking brake cable? I have an 04 Saturn Vue but can not find a video on replacement. Do I need to removed the center console? Or do I just pull up the carpet? I have no resistance when I pull up on the handle...the sheathing on the cable is damaged and needs replacement.

I believe it runs under the car, just pop the back wheel off and follow the cable and see where it goes. I dont have a video because I havent had to replace mine. I only make videos for other people when I do repairs on my own car.

Hi! I have a 1999 Astro van which has locking up brakes every time I start driving the car in the morning. Sometimes they start to lock up later in the drive, occasionally. After a few slow accelerations and stopping slowly, the locking goes away upon initial drive. I have already replaced all the hardware in the drum brakes and brake master cylinder. Have no clue what to do next.

Both brakes? rear? front? left? right side?
@AutoMotivate

It’s only the rear brakes. The front are disk. After watching your video, I tried out the “backing up and stepping on the brakes”. That got rid of the locking up, but I’m more than confident that is a temporary fix. I’m concerned, now, that the actuator pin is freely spinning.

@@AutoMotivate Spinning??? brake actuators don't spin Based on your response, I would suggest taking it to a professional.

Great video, just one question, if I have rear drum brakes without brake shoes, does it mean the pads and the caliper is working excatly the same as with regular brakes, but in this case purely mechanical? in other words does the pads clamp to the disc fron both sides by pulling the cable? thank you

I'm a bit confused... You have drum brakes with brake shoes?

I have my 2007 corolla and the e brake was very loose, I removed the drum brake and re adjust the self adjusting part, then after 1 week it got loose again. I removed the drum brake again and cleaned then with brake parts cleaners without removing the harware. Then I adjusted it again, and now it lasted a couple of months, but it got loose again. The vehicule has 190K miles. Do you think the harware and self adjusting part are already past their prime and need replacement?, brake shoes, and drum disc are brand new

Sorry to hear! What happens when you manually self-adjust (When driving)? Loose on both sides? If both ends are secure 100%, then you're pretty much left with the cable or the self-adjuster. There isn't much more to it considering everything else is new
@alexanderaparicio9653

@TutorialGenius Nothing happens when driving it. Before I even did anything to the brakes, the e brake was loose, no matter if you were pulling it all the way up now after I cleaned the harware and self adjusting with brake parts cleaner it was holding up good for a couple months but eventually got loose again but right now it does actually engage whenever you pull the e brake all the way up

@TutorialGenius I gotta mention that the self adjusting part instead of expanding itself, it actually retracted inward, so for some reason, I think it might just be worn out, but I would like a second opinion before spending money. Thank you in advance
@alexanderaparicio9653

@TutorialGenius it's loose on both sides. You can actually pull the drum without any drag. Of course, I gotta manually adjust it for it to have some drag, I have only done it 4 times now, the previous 3 times I didn't cleaned it the fourth time I cleaned it and improved and hold up for longer than 4 months
