In the US, parking passes aren't that hard to get and many people will use their parent's/spouse's/etc. Like I have a decal on my truck, but it's my husband's and I would never abuse it. Even when I was a teenager there were times I was driving with my dad and he would tell me to park in handicap parking when he wasn't going in the store because 'you could be getting something for me." We have a friend whose daughter is disabled and had a handicap parking pass before she was even 18. She got harassed by a security guard because he said it wasn't her pass.

@@Pineapple_Cheasecake That sucks. I hate to see people abuse the system when others can't access it. In South Carolina, they started putting the driver's license picture of the person it was issued to on the tags that we hang from mirrors, which I hate because so many people drive around with them hanging from their mirrors. But my husband and I had the plates. We live in Alabama, where I grew up now, and they're going to a new system next year. I haven't read about it yet. Now we have to have a sheet with the vehicle registration that shows who the plate is assigned to. There's also a form that goes with the hanging placards, but that seems silly if you're moving it between vehicles.

I use forearm crutches and have had a disabled parking placard for nearly 20 years now. Since I'm still pretty young, older folks sometimes approach me to say I shouldn't be parking in the disabled spot since I'm obviously too young to be disabled. Sometimes, they even accuse me of stealing my grandma/grandpa's placard to get better parking. I usually open the door and then grab my crutches and wildly swing them in their direction while staring them down without saying a word. Walking up to a disabled person's vehicle to tell them they don't look disabled enough is unhinged, so I figure that meeting them with equally unhinged energy usually does the trick.

All 4 corners of the Ren Faire block. to go to the Ren Faire, I would have to park about two blocks away and it just about killed me to have to hobble that far to get to the Ren Faire. When I got there, the man in the trucks accosted me with his business card an asked me for my vote. I told him I would NEVER vote for anyone who took up all the handicapped spots, making me have to walk so far to get to the Ren Faire. He scoffed, "Disabled people don't get out on Sundays!" They won't let you park there to pick the badge up, there isn't any other close parking, and the buses don't stop close to it. It's incredible. I'm now at a point where I have a friend who could drop me off, but I've given up trying because it's such a stupid system

My health can change from day to day. There are days I can walk without a cane or wheelchair. Then there are days I have to use a walking cane. And some days I have to use the wheelchair. So I try to understand when ignorant people are clueless, but I can deal with most people as long as they are kind.

@@dechinta yeah, life do be like that, ups and downs. But on your best day, when/if able to walk, do you still use the disabled spots? There is a finite amount of resources. And IMO they should be extended to the ones who need them most. There is a song in Slovene that goes like this; life is like a chicken-ladder - short and shitty. And that stands for everyone. I think the reserved spots should be available to you when you need it. It shouldn't be filled with a car of a mother to a 4yo suffering of ADHD.
@dechinta
20 күн бұрын
@@ZanDolinar It depends on whether there is another space close by. I never have a day good enough where I could walk a ways. Also, I might be feeling pretty good, but when I go into WalMart, for example, EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. one of the employees will rush in front of me, giving me a hard look or an eye roll and I have to grab hold of something to keep from falling or some teenager runs in front of me, rolling his/her eyes because I am in the way. So, while I might be feeling pretty well when I go IN to WalMart, I might end up falling (I have fallen 3 times in WalMart in the past 15 years) or someone might run in front of me which will throw out my back or knock out one of me knees, so I do usually try to get a handicapped spot because I have no clue what's going to happen once I'm in WalMart. And also, once I get my shopping done, if I have to stand in line for a long time, it wears me out to just stand in one spot and I can pass out very easily if I'm just standing in one spot. So I do try to get a handicapped spot. If there are 3 handcapped spots and the 4th spot is not a handicapped spot, but still close enough for me to get in and out, hopefully, without much trouble, I will get the spot that is not a handicapped spot. Also when I was younger, I always thought that someday I might get old and not be able to take my cart to the cart corral, so I used to always try to take TWO carts back. And now there are times when I can't take the cart to the corral because I am too out of breath and again, close to passing out, especially in the horrendous Alabama heat.

It took me five years and court too. Apparently migraines (a particularly bad type that they ignore and think is “just a headache”), and 5 surgeries to the spine and brain that only “kind of” worked, along with dozens of different meds wasn’t enough to get SSDI the first and second times I applied. I also tried three different jobs in between. Even one former boss (I quit before they could let me go) wrote a letter saying it was obvious I sick, despite my best and “strenuous” efforts to work a full regular work week. I passed out on day 8. There were so many hospital records included too. A state rep. and minister (not mine) were character witnesses on top of that (as well as former employers and college professors). I had a letter from my GP, a counselor, and 3 specialists. If you don’t get a lawyer and aren’t over about 50, or have something the “powers that be” consider “severe” (not actual doctors-and well known universities like Duke and Wake Forest at that) you likely won’t get it. They don’t care. (Fortunately, I found an ethical attorney that would let you pay after you get the settlement).

The fact you can’t really get a blue badge unless you are on the highest level of mobility PIP (Personal Independence Payment) and getting any type of PIP is such a hard trial let alone the highest levels people should accept the disability of a blue badge holder without a moments thought. It’s also worth remembering that the driver doesn’t have to be the disabled person. I can no longer drive but I still have a blue badge. If someone came across a car I was using to say, get to an appointment and the person who drove me was sitting alone in the car in a spot that requires a blue badge. They may not be disabled in any way but the parking spot is still being used completely legally. This means that if you see someone with a blue badge in a disabled spot, just keep walking.

My husband’s aunt is 100 years old and was recently on our local news in Utah talking about her husband who was a WWII pilot who was a POW in Japan. He was imprisoned with Louis Zamperini who was the subject of the film Unbroken. A couple of years ago her kids suggested she try to get a disability parking placard for convenience in parking at the grocery store to make things easier with getting her groceries to the car or if they go to a big event she doesn’t have to walk a quarter of a mile. She is elderly after all, one of the oldest people in the state. So the doctor asked her questions and reviewed her stuff and did not approve her for a pass! She’s too healthy! She was fine with it since it was her kids that brought it up and encouraged it. But imagine being that elderly and being declined a pass. That’s pretty amazing. My mother-in-law, her younger sister by 11 years has dementia but she is still as strong as an ox. When I was in 37 I blew my back out and was down for two months and learned the hard way after that that even though my back had been rehabbed I should never lift anything heavy ever again after I tried to lift an appliance Dolly and ended up on the ground unable to move. My mother in law was over 70 at the time and she wanted to borrow my minivan and needed the third row seat taken out. This was in a 1996 Dodge Caravan with those heavy seats. I unlatched it for her but said I couldn’t get it out and wasn’t sure who could help us but she picked that heavy seat up and carried it all the way to the garage! She was twice my age but I have degenerative disk disease and she didn’t. You can’t judge based on age. I have never had a placard though, even when I had a cane at one time and my spine doc offered it because I felt it was good for me to walk and I’d get help from store employees with my groceries.

In the US, our physicians fill out an application and then we submit it to the state for approval for a disability permit. I’ve had one for several years. When I was in my forties, I received my first permit. I would be stopped by people asking why I have the permit when I “obviously” am not disabled, not old and able to walk. Sometimes, I just got dirty looks. I once got a note on my windshield that I should leave the parking space for someone who “really” needs it. I wasn’t missing any limbs, had no casts and appeared healthy and young (I was in good shape and did look younger than my age). They couldn’t see all the scars from surgeries or the many pieces of foreign metal in my body or the implanted computer and battery pack. They couldn’t feel the pain I had every day. Unless they were right next to me, they wouldn’t notice the effort it took for me to get from one place to another. Now that I’m older and grayer and, at times walk with a cane, no one questions me. ✨ “Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.”

My wife is also an ambulatory wheelchair user and needs one because she can break bones easily, falls easily and also because of prior broken bones she has pain in her legs. My wife also, as an example, sometimes takes her wheelchair out but walks behind it to use it like a walker, until she gets too tired or in pain and then she has somewhere to sit that is made for her and supports her back better than a normal chair.

I took her to Walmart once and she got a scooter, because she had surgery on her foot and had a full length cast. A woman came up to her and said she doesn't need it and demanded the cart from her! When she doesn't have her surgeries, her disabilities are invisible. It's ridiculous that people think they are experts on others disabilities!

When I first saw one of your videos, I did think it was fake, Im not going to lie. But i do understand that you need it, I was more of questioning myself about it, I do know now that it’s important for you to be a wheelchair user. I send love

Had someone tell this to my mom once. The look on their face when she got the wheel chair out of the back for my stepdad.

I’ve had several people approach me, saying I don’t look like I have a disability. I explained to them that my lungs have to much scar tissue from illnesses and from a pulmonary embolism, I get out of breath very easily on some days. A couple of them pushed it and I had them in tears by the time we parted ways. They probably won’t be doing that to anyone else.

True. Many people have disabilities that aren't visible to "normal" people. I had surgery on my leg a few years ago and couldn't walk very far without getting exhausted, and I had a tag for a few months until I built my strength back up.

It was so disheartening when I was helping my mom get my dad to his appointment today. He has bad arthritis in his legs and he NEEDS that disabled parking spot. I saw only 5 cars with actual disability licence plates/tags, out of like 15 disabled parking spots. My mom had to wait to get another parking spot after dropping him off at the entrance. It actually made me angry that so many people who dont need it, use it. (Btw not saying this creator is someone who doesn't need it, i love her content that she brings awareness to invisible disabilities too ❤❤❤)

I can relate. Even with a service dog Ive been questioned. I have stigns all over car saying "Not all disabilities are visible" people need to stay in there own lane. Jealousy isnt an excuse for ignorance😕.

I have chronic invisible illnesses, and my doctors keep telling me that they will sign the paperwork for a handicap placard. My mouth is what stops me because I will lose my mind on someone for saying stuff to me. I try to be calm and educate others, but some days, my pain is so high that I can't be. I wouldn't use it all the time, either, just the really bad days.

I didn’t realize Disabled Parking had their own versions of Karens. I guess there is no escaping them anywhere.

We have one. My hubby and I are both disabled. What drives me crazy is the people who park in these spots without one. They don't take into consideration that we need that spot for a reason. So annoying

I was helping a friend shop and the closest- and only disabled spot was taken up by one we know for 100% wasn’t disabled. So she parked her car just behind that car and essentially made it impossible for the other person to leave. We took our sweet time in the store, knowing full well the other person wouldn’t call the police since they were the one breaking the law while our car had the right placard.

I saw a comment that said: an old lady said ‘you shouldn’t park there you dont look disabled’ and i told her ‘awh thanks, neither do you!’ I laughed so hard at this comment 😂

This is why I got my sister stickers for her car saying not all disabilities are visible and I have Fibromyalgia. When I'm with her she does not get problems. Not because of my facial expressions or attitude or sarcasm levels sadly but because I need crutches to walk.

For those who are not familiar with the blue badge scheme, the device in her hand is not a blue badge. It is the counterpart "clock" on which you set your arrival time, though this is not always required in all settings. The badge itself is a much more sophisticated device, resembling a very large credit card (to some degree). On the front, there is a unique alphanumeric identifier, the name of the issuing authority and the recipient's date off birth which is encoded into another numerical string. On the reverse side there is the recipient's photograph (passport style). The device also includes a number of tamper proof and anti copying features, along with a hologram and "watermarks". The "clock" on its own does not offer any rights or privileges. The UK blue badge is reputed to be one of the most secure disabled parking devices in the world.

Some people have anxiety about parking and need a bigger bay? That’s called MENTALLY HANDICAPPED.

In California, placards are issued to a person and not a vehicle. In fact, in San Francisco, there are more registered placards than there is registered vehicles in the city.

My aunt who had polio as a child and waked with a brace all her life would routinely get challenged in handicapped spots even by cops. She even got tickets she had to fight.

No literally. I have a blood disorder and can bleed out easily. If I’m in a grocery store, big restaurant, zoo, etc. I need to be able to be within semi sprinting distance because if there’s a shooting or stabbing I’d be quick to bleed out so I either have to escape or have a close area to where I can get my shit and zoom to the hospital. I’m not saying I’m more important than everyone else but because of my clotting time, I have to prioritize myself in emergency situations.

I have epilepsy and heart problems so it's kinda hard going places. I always get stares for being in the disabled parking spot. I have an extremely hard time walking for more than 20 minutes, and having episodes in public is so overwhelming. I'm only 22 so people assume I'm just faking to get the parking spot. My favorite issue was using the spot for the first time and someone left a sticky note on my car about "Who's the handicap, shame on you" my mom was livid. I don't drive personally. I had my badge and everything. People are crazy
