I think because there is a much larger pool of white guitarists, esp in metal, it may seem that black guitarists are more laid back. In the 70's, black guitarist were more prevalent in soul/funk which relied on more theatrics than aggression. There are not a heluva lot of Black guitarist in metal/punk/hard rock but the one's who are out there rock pretty hard, i.e. Bad Brains. It just depends on the genre you are playing and your style. IDK.

RRT, honestly this was the first time I've ever heard of these people, but they really had it going on. I heard a little bit of everything in there. A little bit of funk, soul, rock, blues, and it mixed so well. It just flowed, and I felt it smoothly moving together, because when I'm listening to heavy metal I'm always sitting in my computer chair, because I'm on a lap top, I think I'm probably the only person on earth that doesn't own an Iphone. lol Anyway, my head is banging, I'm playing air guitar, and just about busting my ears out with the headphones. I'm going to go deaf, because I put it up as loud as it will go. With this, I got out the chair, and was swaying and really getting into the sound. As far as their clothes, you are so right! I was young once, and some of the stuff I wore was simply outrageous. It was just the thing during that era! It was fun, that's why I try not to be critical of what people are wearing today. Everything changes, nothing ever stays the same. I'm rambling, I know! lol I was always so convinced that I could not like anything but metal, but I thoroughly enjoyed this. I found out that I can enjoy other genres, so keep the good stuff coming! I'm ready for it! Peace! :-)

They even landed it in Time Square and Bootsy Collins even appeared from it. They were the ones with a spaceship and was a big part of the show. Funkadelic put out an album a couple years ago, Bootsy Collins had new CD late last year and Parliaments new CD will be out around 5/22/18 called Medicaid Fraud Dog. People move with the music in their own way while they play guitar. It's part of the rhythm even of it's crazy looking to us. Neil Young is an exception to the rule though. That man is foolish when he performs! As far as race, I don't agree. I've seen all walks of people play love and it's just how they feel the music. Some people just can't move with rhythm.

You make a good point there at 7:20 onward, some musical vibes have been with you since the beginning even if you weren't ever aware. The fun thing for me, discovering the P-Funk at 30+ was, I grew up on classical music, jazz and oldskool rock n'roll (me and my sister were especially fond of Little Richard). When I first heard Parliament-Funkedelic, It made so much sense on so many levels! it combined all those types of music, along with the 60s and 70s music that I'd come to appreciate later in life and also retrospectively, of the hiphop that I'd grown to love. It turned out to be the missing link between all that I liked in music.

Rap Rat Trapped appreciated the reply, knew that you'd have a bunch of Rush requests. I'm not sure if you knew this but, Canada is a HEAVY winter sports culture and we LOVE the Winter Olympics. We have CBC tv that only broadcasts Canadian content nation wide, and during the Games,it runs 24/7 live coverage We as a country learned that the lead singer for The Tragically Hip had inoperable brain cancer, and was going to die within the next year or so. They planned a good bye tour, and was sold out within hours, nation wide. The last stop on the tour was in Toronto and in the middle of The Games. CBC tv decided to cut the coverage of The Games to live broadcast the concert in honour of the band and singer, Gord Downie. He is considered Canada's Poet Laureate, a lot of the songs have many social/spiritual views from a Canadian perspective. Again, love the channel, keep it up, give "Blow at High Dough", or even "38 Years old", a listen. Peace

yeah you had it right in the crawl, Parliament and Funkadelic were two separate bands made of the same musicians (for the most part) playing different types of music, it wasn't until like the 80's that they became one band, this is the Funkadelic side. Def more "fusion" which basically just means "add rock" lol. Jazz fusion, neo-classical fusion, but it can be any blending of different musical styles. This has blues, jazz, rock, R & B, funk mixed together. Not sure if you'd dig it, but Frank Zappa (Crazy talented crazy satirical, crazy prodigious and some of the best musicians) kzitem.info/news/bejne/y5d80Z2prl-maY4 and Mahavishnu Orchestra (instrumental jazz fusion- formed by John Mclaughlin- Miles Davis' first guitar player in the late 60's/early 70's ) kzitem.info/news/bejne/rZmHsZ6cn6p6go4 are 2 bands on the fusion spectrum

You've answered your own question. Black people move to that groove you feel, sometimes known as the pulse, whereas white people tend to move to illustrate the words or melody notes. That instrument is a Hohner D6 clavinet, played by the great Bernie Worrell. You really should read the lyrics the song is so much deeper than the funk that is moving your body. Also check out the original studio version, it is necessary to understand this version, and yes, it is speeding up. The lead guitar is 100% based on blues. metal, and most other types of distorted guitar sounds are all born from the blues.

I think the hard 'rocking' you mention is more a function of having formal musical training...I was taught to physically keep the beat to help you feel the flow of the music, but on the whole the energy should be in your fingers and not wasted by unnecessary motion like headbanging. Of course, part of the foundation of music where people headbang or are aggressive while playing is an anti-norm/revolutionary/postmodern one and it therefore is part of the style, but Parliament's musicians were 'of' the Motown scene and would likely have received similar training to what I received.

That sound your hearing is a Bernie Worrells organ with a wah wah pedal. As far as guitar players, im one myself and it all depends on what your playing and feeling, not what color you are. Some feel what they're playing and some just play. It's all about the guitarist. Parliament was more R&B while Funkadelic had a more acid fock sound but were the same musicians. Some of the most funky like Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Garry Shider, Eddie Hazel, Glen Goins, Jerome Brailey, Gary Cooper, Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker from James Browns Band, just to name a few. More then 20 musician on stage in the band all at one time and always has 3 guitars players or more playing in the band and at the shows.
@Easy_Skanking

@RRT: As to the instrumentation in this one, there's a rhythm guitar using a wah pedal in a very choppy funky patterns as well as a percussive sounding electric organ playing similar comping patterns. These guys have so much of this comping and improvising it all just weaves in and out of your attention. You hear new stuff every time you listen. As to guitar players movements, I think it does have a lot to do with the type of music they are playing. This song is a hell of a lot smoother and groovier than the Neil young song and the guitarists feel that. Some of it does seem to be a black or white cultural thing. The kinds of music the P-Funk guys grew up with was a different kind than Neil Young but they did have more overlap with SRV, for instance. There are always exceptions as Steve Vai, being an Italian descent white guy, is a smooth player that drives women nuts with his seductive playing and moves. Tony McCalpine, a black guy, is a virtuoso on both guitar and piano with a classical upbringing. His movements are pretty stiff when he moves at all. However, the music he plays is so demanding, most people can't play it at all let alone move to it. LOL

Son, you should've seen and heard them live in the late 70ies and 80ies. The Costumes, the landing of the mothership, the pink cushioned car that comes apart, the pyramid and the big silver eyeglass with light up eyeballs that move and look at you. Oh, and the extra big blue jean prop floppy hat like Gary (the Diaper man) Shider has on. It also had lights on it. The Best Live show prop set of all times. Weeeelll maybe not because their other live show sets were just as crazy and unique as the last one. One tour had a huge skull with light up eyes and a moving mouth. He smoked a joint and blew it out of his nose. The joint was light with an oversized lighter. Man, I enjoyed those days and tours. Son, dig deep into them, you’ll enjoy the peaceful funk they spread. As a matter of fact, he is still touring at 76 or 77. Dr. Funkenstein (George Clinton) is still off the chain. Maybe you should check them out before he retires next year. P-Funk forever. 🤘🏽

You are indeed hearing many forms of music here, because at the time all these sounds you here are generally new, shit was not done before so this is creation in action later to be followed by others who were feeding off that and creating more new shit. That sound you're hearing is called "the one". James Brown mentioned it in one of his songs. Parliament even wrote a song called Everything Is On The One. You see the one is what makes funk the music that it is. In a basic four/four beat the emphasis Is on the first beat "the one". In other words ONE and two and three and four and ONE and two and three and four. Listen closely and you will hear it. No matter how the speed and tempo changes or style changes the one Will always be consistent throughout the song. Parliament were the kings of The One and as they said "EVERYTHING IS ON THE ONE!"

Between P-Funk (i.e. George Clinton) and James Brown (Bootsy Collins played with both) there are many hip-hop songs that sampled them. If you listen, you can hear it, and will notice the samplings.

All I know is what White Men Can't Jump taught me: "A white man wants to win first, look good second; a black man wants to look good first, win second." Just kidding, though.

You're probably right about the guitarist, and what you said about how different people play reminded me of the line from that movie, which is a great fucking comedy that still makes me laugh today. Also, great video... I never thought I could respect a man wearing a diaper on stage.

It's either an organ set to the "tong" sound or a clavinet. The latter is used for that kind of rhythm a lot. Think Stevie Wonder's "Superstition".

Your comment about the crazy clothes was pretty funny and point taken. But there is one thing that needs to be considered before using Parliament Funkadelic as proof that old people have no business criticizing the pants around the ankles style that kids wear in public. The costumes that Parliament Funkadelic wore on stage were just that - costumes. And they did look silly. However, and this is the important point, teenagers in the 70s weren't going out in public wearing nothing but a giant diaper. There is a lot to criticize in 70s clothing styles, but at least nobody is making fun of our Spiderman Underoos. Why? Because nobody saw them :-)

As far as guitar body language, I don't think there's much of a racial separation. As a guitar player, and a white dude, I'm not very animated. Facial expressions are pretty universal if you pay attention, although some folks get way into their music to the point that they sorta illustrate what they're feeling when they play. Others are just into jumping around or like to walk. Remember that Chuck Berry was one of, if not THE first dude to move around and dance with his guitar. A lot of people cued off of that. I think it's more dependent on the style than the guitarist. Also the skill of the player. For me personally, I can't jump around or get too overly animated because I have to concentrate on what I'm doing. Especially with soloing or while singing. Guys like Steve Vai, he can toss the guitar in the air and play it with his mind, that's how good he is. I don't remember if you've reacted to Tender Surrender by Steve Vai, the live version. It's been said that he doesn't play the guitar, he makes love to it. Tender Surrender - Steve Vai kzitem.info/news/bejne/uq1tmqd6kIJ5aoo

Interesting reaction and review. Cool hat of the guitarist. Thumbs up! :) I'm recommending the band "Die Krupps" and their song "Schmutzfabrik".
