Al Graham traveled from Liberty Center, Ohio to Michigan for the 80th Bay City Pigeon Fanciers Show. He asked if we wanted to see his Parlor Rollers. How could we say no?
As a pigeon owner, I’m horrified how he holds his pigeon like an object with no respect for it as a living creature. I could never hold my boy like this.

They have no respect at all for them. This trait has been deliberately 'Breed In' over numerous years, initially to provide easy kill training for Falcons and Hawks in the Tumbler Pigeons case. For those who rear the Birds like the O.P here and anyone with any shade of decency, you seriously must question the Ethics of people who boast about competitions where the intent is to watch these birds attempt to Fly with all their Will, yet only be capable of Rolling until exhausted. 2024 and still a reality.

Rollers?? Are you kidding me? The mutation of the genetic bond has failed. I grew up in a place where 8 of 10 people kept pigeons. As they can produce magnificent looking babies because of the adapted mutation, there are times where the RNA of both male and female bond the way which results in handicapped birds, just like a human child which won't show any signs till later the same is for the birds. That's why first few months they look fine but once fully grown they might fly once and that's it. Some can't even walk, like the one he is showing. That is why he lets go of the bird and then once stopped he picked him up. Cause that bird can't even walk. Don't be mistaking these with Burningham Rollers. They are acrobats and fly and hovering over the loft. Totally different than this poor crippled bird.
@sjsisjsjks

It's great that you recognize there's an issue here, I'm shocked the pigeon fancy hasn't rallied against this clear abuse of genetics. Flying rollers, though, don't choose to roll either. The action is purely unintentional, also due to a genetic defect and I'm sure very frightening for the bird to experience.
@niavvaran
3 жыл бұрын
@@sjsisjsjks on the contrary, they do decide when to roll. I have some older males which were handfeed when younger. The only time they roll is when they're above my head and I clap 3 times. They are not high or distance flyers. But I see your point. There are definitely more defective genes in those than the regular ones which can make them to lose control rolling.

It's sad how the most disabled pigeons are selected to breed even more disabled pigeons. Why can't we just breed pretty healthy birds without neurological disabilities? Same as pugs and other short snouted dogs, we breed disabled animals because it's entertaining to us, what kind of sick world have we become. Imagine if people would encourage disabled people to have kids, just because we can have more disabled people, because some think it's cute.

@Deigo Quizotwry There are similarities, but also differences. For whatever reason Evolution created this oddity and humans just found a reason for these birds to not go extinct. Little People did not go extinct because THEY decided they didn't want to do this any more. But in a world where we selectively breed dogs but particularly cats to be companions and evolutionary adaptation as seen in these pigeons was slated to go extinct. So are we going to so blind ourselves with emotional concerns that we would be calling their still being around as sad? I'm writing this because one Ontario woman wanting to signal her virtue has single-handedly decided her mission in life is to stop all "pigeon-rolling" events that give reason for these birds to be protected. And this is a disturbing trend of thinking your emotions get to tell others what to do and even to shape the world. If enough people decide these bird need to be tossed out as a function of emotions it will happen. But personally I would rather see the idea that emotions devoid of intellect needs to re-shape the world, tossed out.
