The Choir of Trinity College Cambridge and Dr Stephen Layton are joined by brass and timpani of Britten Sinfonia for this performance of Hubert Parry's 'I was glad' at a special service of Evensong to mark the Coronation of HM King Charles III in Trinity College Chapel on Sunday 7 May 2023.
This performance features the 2023 Coronation Vivats [3:08]. The Vivats are Latin acclamations originally made by the King’s Scholars of Westminster School to greet kings and queens on their arrival at Westminster Abbey for their coronation. Hubert Parry incorporated the Vivats into his original 1902 composition for the Coronation of HM King Edward VII, and they have been modified for the work's performance at each subsequent Coronation. The Vivats are omitted from regular performances of 'I was glad'. Choirs around the UK and Commonwealth were authorised to use the 2023 Vivats for services over the Coronation weekend by Westminster Abbey.
The full service can be watched in full at our website 'Listen Again' archive, which contains the audio and video of all services livestreamed from Trinity College Chapel since 2012.
