First off I'd like to say thank you. This video is precisely what I was looking for when I typed Harbor freight Modifications. I plan on buying a 4x36 tomorrow and needed to know all the points you covered. In addition to the lathe work I plan on using a higher HP motor so I look forward to the rest of what you are kind enough to share.

No problem! This model has since been replaced with another- which is a bit different. I've heard from others it worked fine out of the box. But, with HF YMMV. I can't speak for the motor on the new one, but this one is extremely weak. Good luck with your mods, G.

@@ghostses I have had the newer model for close to two years now. I had already trued up the 6" disc and the tightening wheel. How i got here was looking for mods to make changing the belt and I too am done with the guards and Heating and bending the stop ( other side ) solved the issues. Just being able to change grits easily is so much nicer. A couple of things to look into. The Bearing in the cap side went dry. Use a pick and gently pull off the cover, repack with grease and pop the cover back on. After about a year it got very noisy and the 6" disc moved out and ground into the table. Finally the noise was too much and I just tore down all the way to the disc side bearing. Found out the inner race of the bearing had been spinning and wore the shaft compounding the problem. I too have a lathe, turned down the shaft and sleeved the bearing area only with some brass. I know a new owner would not want to tear it down but if you don't own a lathe the fix is near impossible. I think if you tore down while new and checked the fit and most likely Locktite the inner race to the shaft with just a drop or so could work. My bearing was good but I repacked it while in there. Can't believe the difference, much quieter and IF you adjust the V-belt and the Motor is powerful enough for most work. With the bottom guard off of course the dust is going to be everywhere but it already was ...

Nice video. I will pick one of these up. For a belt to run straight on a conveyor system you just need both rollers to be parallel and square. A crowned shaft is usually used when several belts run on a common shaft. They are set square and usually have an idler roller plus a tension wheel and they will just move to the crown when moving with tension. Belt sanders do not have crowned pulleys. They just have the fixed drive pulley and an idler pulley with in out adjustment on one side for squaring.
@ghostses
9 жыл бұрын
All 1x72 belt sanders I've seen do have a crown pulley- at least at the idler. I agree it should track if all is correct, but that wasn't the case on this machine. The pulleys on mine might be twisted which might have caused my problem- I never checked. I've heard the newer model tracks fine. Good luck, G.

I just purchased one of these a couple of days ago. It appears someone at the design table is watching these videos because several of the problems on this machine have been addressed. Mine tracks the belt very well. The table has set screws that hold it steady and the thumb screw for the belt tracking just needed a shot of wd40 to loosen it up. It still has a slight tic when running, which I believe is the belt itself, otherwise its not that loud. Thanks for the review.
@ghostses

Thanks or the info on yours Ted. Perhaps they are and are addressing some of the problems mine had. I do believe the tick is just the scarf joint on the belt making noise like you've indicated. Good to hear just a shot of WD what all you needed to get yours working it's best. Does the motor seem a bit underpowered on yours? Take care, G.

I agree with Ted. I just purchased one also, about $60 on sale. Looks like the issues in these 3 videos have been fixed by HF. This is a great light duty sander, which appears to work very well on my knife handles. I did sand some door parts on the belt, 1 1/2" x 32". It didn't stall the motor, but you can bog it down if you press hard enough. But that is when engaging the full length of the belt. I was surprised it was as powerful as it is. It actually exceeded my expectations of performance. For smaller items, which is what I got it for, this sander is entirely adequate. I ended up talking off all the guards and dust collector, I will just pack it outside to sand anything that I don't want the dust inside, (like bone and horn, etc). With the guards/dust collectors in place, changing disks and belts will be a big hassle. Switching between grits will be work instead of quick and easy. Do use caution to stay out of the disk, while sanding on the belt, if you go this route. Overall, for the money spent, this sander is hard to beat. This is in no way meant to imply that there are not better sanders available (for more $ of course).

Jessie James Nice write-up Jesse! Mine is an older model that didn't have the dust collection on it. I can see how it would be a pain to change the paper out with them on. I agree, for what it is and what it costs- it's a pretty decent unit. I don't know if there are any other sanders out there in this price point, but I'm pleased with it for my use. I do the same thing, depending on what I'm using it for, and take it outside. Take care, G.

I just got one today and all the issues you have noise, low start up torque is all good to go. Did not ck for the disc being true though and I will check that next time I am out in the garage. I also got the 2 year extended warranty, so if it takes a dump or they revise the entire unit and make it better than it is, I will be good to go. Lots of tinkering in your 3 part video to get that one to work properly. Give you credit for your craftsmanship and patience on getting a poor performing tool to better than stock design. I have purchased a lot of HF items in the past year 2014 and most if not all the stuff is good to go right out of the box. for the regular tinkering Joe this is good to go,

Mine says it's a 3/4 but it's severely overrated in my opinion. They may have changed the motor on the newer/better one, but I don't know. You will know in short order if you bear done on the work and it stalls. I can hold the belt with my finger, start it up, and it won't run. I used a wood plane while rotating the cilinder in order to fix the cilinders. Also the support for the belt is not straight to say the least. I glued with contact cement a thick piece of glass over the metal so it supports the belt and now it works better for sharpening. I have a big problem though with the disc sander which is wobling too much. Do you have any advice?
@ghostses
8 жыл бұрын
+bonse3476 Good idea and mods! Man, I assume you don't have machining tools so fixing the disk might be tough. But, the first thing I would do would be to add a setscrew offset 90 degrees to the one it came with. Then slowly tighten them up back and forth while ensuring it stays parallel to the table slot. Or maybe trying to tap it around until it runs true. That's all I can think of off the top of my head. If you do come up with something, post back as it might help others out. Good luck, G.

I drilled/tapped an additional set screw (8-32). Mounted it on a piece of raw stock . Turned it down to 5.9825, then faced it off until the entire plate made contact with the cutter. I machined it at 4800rpm, so once it was back on the sander spinning at 2200, it was so true it appeared motionless.

The version I have has a different setup. For one there is a plastic guard that covers the back section of the belt and the part which you call a guard is actually the fence, and on mine the fence mounts on the other side and has two tapped tabs which connect it to the rear plastic guard. Mine also has an undermount guard for I suppose keeping grit off the motor, but here is the rub. To change the belt, I must remove four screws from the undermounted guard and two from the plastic rear guard and the fence to slide the belt off the rollers. Maybe that would be acceptable for someone who will only change a belt when it wears out, but if you intend to change belts for progressive grit stepups, it is highly unacceptable and is plenty of reason to avoid this machine at any price. The motor on mine doesn't even have a description plate for horsepower and other facts and it is way underpowered. It may be they switched motors to get the sale price point. I suppose it might work out for woodworkers, but it seems to me so far to be almost useless for grinding steel parts. I will probably return this even though I hate to do it, but I would rather pay twice as much if need be or even three times as much to get something that will not let me down. Harbor freight products have improved much over the years, and I have only had to return one for failure, but this is looking like return number two.
@ghostses

+Rollin Shultz This is a discontinued model Rollin. When I bought it, they also had the one you have. I chose this one for all the reasons you state about changing the belt. With this model, I can change the belt in a matter of seconds. I agree, for non-progressive sanding it would work out great. Or maybe have 4 or so units side-by-side for progressive sanding...lol. I use mine for some wood and for deburing things I machine. Not the best, but it does OK. I would like a faster surface speed on the belt but haven't looked into changing out the pulley. Even if I did, I doubt the motor could handle it. I agree, HF has come along way over the years. There was a time in the 90's I wouldn't even go in the store. Have you considered their 6x9 model? It's the one I really wanted but don't have the space. The belts and disks might run a tad more, but they're built pretty good and are reasonably priced for their size. Either way, good luck with your hunt to get something that works well for your needs. Take care, G.

When you first buy any machine with a belt from harbor freight it will likely not get going very well. The belt are really stiff and get stuck in the position they have been sitting in for months since put on the machine. If you start the machine and let it run for 20-30 minutes it will loosen up the belt and it will run better after that.

***** Yep, but 30 years ago I failed to get the switches, wiring, drum rollers, and anything else of use off the dryer. I used a generic rollerblade bearing (from a project 25 years ago installed in a shaft adapter (still in the package & found in the trunk of a rental car). The bearing just happened to fit perfectly. I used the round metal plate out of a flat screen monitor base to mount the bucket, and the shaft goes through the outer bucket and through the bearing. The drive belt is out of a car. I could not find a flat belt, but it still works. The inner bucket is simply slid out to empty. I saw that one, but will try to use as much metal as possible. You know, if you own a company that makes inexpensive tools, I get that you aren't using the best most heavy duty materials in your manufacturing, but would it kill you to actually take a few precise measurements and calibrate your machines to use those measurements? I mean, when you can slide a miter gauge into its slot, and rattle it around to where it sounds like a party noise maker, then clearly you aren't even trying.

Again, I agree Ryan. They're tooling up to make them anyway- so why not make them to a tighter tolerance. They are already there after all. Take care, G.

I bought one of these that I use in my shop everyday. Table is terrible and doesn't stay still. Unit is under powered. I've put up with it, but it really is a crappy tool. You get what you pay for.

I agree it's underpowered for sure. As for the table wobbling around, I fixed mine so it's tight. In part three of this series, towards the end I believe, you can see what I did if you're interested. Good luck, G.

Right now you can buy this sander for $59, which is about $39 too much.

Yeah Ryan, I won't disagree since it needs some help to be better. On a side note- you really should show how you made your crouching Ghoul in more detail. It's simply amazing! G.

@@ghostses Thanks for the compliment. That's my favorite prop I've made so far. Did you watch the video where it shows how I made it move? If so, there are tons of videos which different techniques of how to corpse cheap Walmart skeletons, which is really all mine are. The reason I didn't do a step by step from start to finish is because, first off, I'm not much of a videographer, (horrible public speaker, and really don't think I'd have much to say that people would want to hear) and second, it's really cool to see how other people come up with their own way of doing such things. There are a number of videos of how people have made that prop. We really we don't want a bunch of carbon copies out there, otherwise there's nothing to push anyone to come up with something new or better. It's fun to just figure out the basics of a prop, and then put my own spin on it, and see how others do it their way. At least that's how I go about it. I kind of walk around Spirit Halloween, or similar stores, look at what they've done, and then figure out how I might do it better or different. Just get yourself a couple of cheap skeletons from Walmart, or Target (Target's are better quality for around the same price) look up different corpseing techniques, (personally I like the 0.7 mil plastic drop cloth heat gun shrink wrap and wood stain technique), figure out what you want to make out of it, and what you want it to do, take the thing completely apart, and then put it back together in a way that it will do what you want it to do, or how you want it to move, and then corpse over it. One easy upgrade to these cheap skeletons, but which makes a HUGE difference, is grinding out all of the teeth, and then epoxy in more realistic resin teeth you can purchase on Amazon. It makes a big difference in how realistic it looks. I'm probably going to go back over the older props I've made and give them all an upgrade. However, I'm always happy to answer any questions to help out.

Don't EVER sell yourself short Ryan. You do YOU and the rest will follow. Different takes on the same type of thing on here is what make this site even better. So, get it on. I've never looked into this type of stuff other than checking out your uploads based on your comments on my video. It peeked my interest in something I have no interest in. Show your take from start to finish on how you did it- the complete process. What you did is not in my wheel house like I said, but I was truly impressed with what you did do. Good luck, G.

+sjeverett75 I did. It is under powered. They don't sell this exact model anymore so the newer ones might be different in terms of power, and some design aspects. Take care, G.

+ghostses I think the newer ones are 3/4hp I read lots of reviews saying they were underpowered, but read just as many saying they just had loose belts. Only reason I brought it up is because sometimes we forget to check the obvious. Thanks for the review and for responding.

sjeverett75 That's true, the obvious is often overlooked. If you pick one up, let me know if you think the newer model is underpowered. G.

Not sure where you're coming from Cole. I love HF but do know some of their items are "kits" that need finishing to get the most from them. Watch other videos of mine and the tale will tell itself. Take care, G

+Frank Toro I wouldn't say that Frank. I pointed out all the problems, fixed them, and now have a good tool for a good price. That's exactly what I do for all my reviews- show the good, the bad, and the ugly. That way people know what to expect for their money, and how to make things work better if possible. A very positive approach- in my opinion. Take care, G.
