Hi John I live in Perth Australia, work for the local government as Compliance Officer, and just started an advance Diploma of Building Surveying. Your videos has given me an amazing understanding how building material designed to preform, and a great insight into the way the BC was written. I do understand the BC in Australia may differ, however much of the principle should be the same. I sincerely congratulate you on a very informative and much needed videos, watching your videos has quenched my thirst on the subject. Wishing you nothing but the very best from downunder, and God bless.

Have you ever done a paving stone and cinder block foundation? I am redoing a house and never have before. Would I have to cement the cinder blocks to the paving stones and cement them altogether? I will put cement down inside them with a rod in each center then a long board to start the structure across that. I saw this on a you tube video. Perhaps I should find the video and ask them about codes and this type of a foundation.

I agree with you on the MASA straps… my house was built with these during the Bubble back in 2005-2006…walls were delivered pre framed that’s why they used them. I prefer 5/8” HDG A.B. or Epoxy set RTF. (Retro fit bolts)

I think architectural engineers must know the basics of the structure. The design is not sufficient unless you know the basic structure.

Do building codes vary from state to state or is it all governed by a national or international body?

It's been 4years since you asked...the uniform building code known as the UBC is updated every couple of years...each town city and county updates their codes to the year that best fits their needs

It's gone all blurry, I can't make out the pictures or the writing. Can you do one up to date of 2018 and in focus? Thanks. I have never build a house before and I have to gut and rebuild my childhood home. I want to make sure I do it correctly. I will try to listen to as much of this topic as I can before I get started. My foundation is cinder blocks, no basement. I saw how one was done, I just need to find out if it is correct. I hate to spend time and get it all wrong. I didn't realize that every step they have to come out and check. It makes sense. I will get someone who has done it to help me to do the right stuff.
