Unfortunately, even the Bible has been fiddled with. I had to study the original Aramaic and Hebrew used as Greek translators didn't always have the *exact* word so some put in what 'they thought' was the closest to the original, but this caused passages to read entirely different from what was originally written. One example is the exile of Noah's son for "uncovering his father's nakedness" which makes it seem as if he was exiled only because he saw his (drunken) father unclothed. The original text relates an entirely different scenario, for which exile is totally reasonable given the circumstances. Another example is the changing of wine skins to bottles (Luke 5:37-38. Putting fresh wine that needs to ferment into an old wineskin will cause it to burst due to its brittleness. Substituting bottle here makes zero sense...but small changes have occurred over time. I have witnessed this myself. This is not to say that the Bible shouldn't be read. It should, but in order to truly understand it, one must study it.

As an older woman who is sorting through the 'stuff' of her life, I am destroying lots of letters, etc. Not being royal, and only a descendant of family from Britain and other countries in the British Isles, my 'stuff' is stuff. Honestly, if people (my family) thought they had the right to know what I wrote, I wouldn't write anything at all. Personal correspondence is just that, personal. I doubt if the royal family, being human, really wants all their wash hung out there, and I don't blame them at all. I imagine that rulers of all kinds have been destroying their memories since cuneiform, and perhaps even paintings on cave walls. I do agree that public records are public records and should be respected and preserved, for better or for worse. But private correspondence is private - IMHO. Or should we all be like Prince Harry? Shudder.

His behaviours as a child and teenager. His time in Afghanistan what is the truth about that? His two invisible children and their very questionable births. His marital status at the present time and whether he is living alone since almost two years. None of these would interest us or be called into question if he lived a quiet life of dignity and obscurity but he keeps thrusting himself into the public eye, often spouting spiteful lies about his family and demands he be addressed as Prince, Duke and his children (??) in America be given British Royal titles!!! 😩😤🙄

I have been in a struggle like that in my town years ago. We never got all we wanted, but our objectives were ultimately achieved. Wow! The UK is in the same moribund condition as the USA. Honor and commitment to good governance are essentially gone. Democracies are failing because too many citizens are lazy and only vote for personally beneficial candidates who buy them off with taxpayer funds whether the nation can afford it or not. Also allowing unions for government workers. That has resulted in mediocrity and waste because the workers can't be fired.

If it wasn't for the dismal fact that this whole case was before a 'kangaroo court', I would bring an action against the solicitors for breach of duty of care (as per equitable principles of law). Because the solicitors acted unconscionsbly in allowing their client to proceed to incur costs in a legal action they could have predicted with reasonable certainty would ultimately fail!! I found this interview conflicting. I understand the Public interest however even mentioning Wallace Simpson having affairs seems very personal to me and should be no one else’s business. This is just one of many examples of when Historians cross the line. Much of what they reveal is gossip and innuendo that could affect ancestors living today. A lot of information can’t be verified so easily as it can be today with the advent of social media. Andrew eludes to that when talking, mentioning “stories at the time” in other words gossip. It’s a very fine line writing about deceased people who can have no redress. To say people destroy some of their correspondence or private letters inferring they are hiding something can be as simple as their desire to keep their very personal feelings and private life, private, as most of us do. It’s not sinister it’s just for privacy. I do understand,as with the Duke of Windsor it was in the Public interest to tell the story of the abdication and his public life after however what happened privately in his marriage is really of no consequence to the public.
@andrewlownie2033
3 ай бұрын
I am not sure what you mean by crossing the line. The point is the Mountbatten material was freely sold for £ millions to be open. Taxpayers money was used so the collection cold be studied. If you read my book you will see that Mountbatten wanted a warts and all biography.

@@andrewlownie2033 I understand that. I was talking more generally. I just think sometimes Historians write about extremely private details of someone’s life based on “stories at the time”. I prefer this kind of democracy over a republic, having a front row seat in Canada to all the carrying on in the United States. I am very sorry he has not had more support especially from other professionals. And I wish he had a benefactor. Maybe not enough people know what he has been trying to achieve. I didn’t. Agreed! Censorship is covering up the truth and there'll be no transparency whilst there is a "big brother" deciding on what's relevant or not. It used to be a strange world we're living in, now it's a scary world. He needs to set up a "Go Fund Me" to cover ongoing costs and make history known! Thank you for a brilliant, informative interview 💗

Andrew Lownie is fascinating. Thanks for a great conversation. I'm a monarchist but since this covering up has become worse, I even wonder if it's coming directly from Charles. He has covered for other problem male mentors before. And why would he ask his son and dau-in-law to name their child after Lord M, knowing what he knows? It's as if he's deliberately defying the facts.
@GinaSeay-kn7xr

A lot of assumptions in your comment there. I'd love to know who the 'other problem male mentors' were. As for historical documents, I feel there should be a moratorium on private correspondence and diaries for at least 150 years after the death of the people involved. Public papers should be restricted only where there's a sensitive security issue, but private papers aren't something the public necessarily have a right to know.

No evidence that Louis is named for Mountbatten-it was already a family name in the royal family. I don’t think that a historian deserves access to sensitive documents or personal records or correspondence when others are still alive who are possibly impacted. Mountbatten’s close family members are still alive.
@thevintageread
3 ай бұрын
That is the point, these were public papers and were sold FOR public access by the family and purchased with tax payers money for that purpose. There are plenty of provisions to protect TRULY sensitive documents. The Royal family don’t have to add private documents to the archive, however allowing a Footman to determine what is public and private is ludicrous. It should be done by a trained historian.

Excellent interview, Shauna. Thanks to both of you. It is sad that the public have to fight, including using our own monies, to obtain information on our own history. The fight can be long, arduous, and possibly dangerous. It takes a brave person to fight for what is right for all of us. Keep on, keepin on Shauna and Andrew.

I admire Andrew Lownie's passion and tenacity in thoroughly researching the historical content he includes in his books. It must be incredibly frustrating to be hindered by so many roadblocks and having to spend so much of his own money to obtain access to the archived material he requires for his research. I am actually surprised that he does not attract wealthy donors to his cause, especially those who may be critics of the British royal family. However, that could be a double-edged sword if the wealthy donors have their own personal motives for funding Mr. Lownie's research and try to exert their influence on his independent writing. Thank you, Shauna, for another great interview!

Socking and scary to hear how things might be being kept from us. Previously I have always felt that its ok for some file to be held back 'in the interest of public peace', but in todays world of multi- social - media and (in most cases) outrageous conspiracy theories, its time to tell all to end the BS, despite the fall out.

I must be the only one with this opinion but I’m going to share it anyway, as I don’t believe in an easy life. I feel sorry for Andrew’s long and expensive legal fight into historical archives. It also sounds very strange in the organisation and the decisions made on what is included etc it’s very haphazard and illogical. However, I feel that the RF and the monarchy are a working and important institution in the U.K. They represent the U.K. on the world stage and are an integral part of our culture and history. So I imagine many of the documents, which are still relevant to the current monarch and family, could cause a great deal of damage to them, the country, the government and economy etc I guess anything before George VI would no longer have any damaging effects today. Documents from Prince Philip and the late Queen are still very relevant due to their recent deaths and children/ grandchildren still living. So the documents about Louis Mountbatten possibly being a sex offender etc is a tricky one as although he has been dead for approx 50 years, his family and connections to the King is very much current. Maybe after the King’s death, it would be different. They definitely shouldn’t destroy anything but maybe release things after a specific generation has ended. So I’m all for sharing documents but it has to be at an appropriate time, after the person and at least 1-2 generations have deceased.

He was killed in 1979, so that’s only 45 years and many involved in the later years during “The Troubles” w/ Northern Ireland may still be quite sensitive and many still living, including members of his family and those killed in the bombing of his boat. Agree, it’s too recent in the history of the nation and the royal family. I like Andrew Lownie, but I am concerned that he’s an anti-monarchy supporter. 🤷🏼♀️

The material we are talking about is all released now. There is nothing in it that would damage the Monarchy. I believe in a constitutional Monarchy too, however it cannot survive rewriting history. Cover ups only do more damage in the end. Any material TRULY sensitive can be withheld for security reasons. The material discussed in this video didn’t qualify.

Very interesting both, thank you. It appears that some rights and privileges in the UK are more rhetorical and conditional than they first appear. You're free to try to do things in theory, but you might find they're impossible to do in reality. Every nation tells stories about itself for comfort and unification purposes to some degree, but we've got it down to a fine art after years of mastering the trade. How could things like that possibly happen in Britain, with our "Mother of Parliaments" and tradition of tolerance and rule of law? There seems a general consensus currently that the standards of those in public life has dropped. I'm not so sure, I suspect it's always been broadly the same but now it's more difficult to hide things at all or even keep those in the know to a very small number. The gist if not the magnitude of Andrew's struggles will be familiar to all of us in some way. The silly politics at work, or the bullying and ganging up that occurs when someone expresses an unpopular opinion online. I think we all feel like the Little Red Hen sometimes, and we're probably all sometimes guilty of complaining but not helping the individual who has stuck their head above the parapet while still wanting the good outcome they're fighting for.
