Wali Daad Bhandara now lives in 28 DP near
Pakpattan, Punjab, Pakistan. His father's name was Mian Dilawar Khan and grandfather's name was Mian Fateh Din Bhandara.
His family migrated from Dewan Khera, district Fazilka in 1947. They were big landlords of the area. They buil a beautiful mosque in Dewan Khera and they had two huge havelis.
They had lands in Dewan Khera, Koel Khera and Bakainwala villages. They had to leave all behind. In Koel Khera, about 200 hindus and sikhs were killed in crossfire opened by ambushed muslims.
Sappanwali was attacked and ten or so muslims were killed and about 45 injured were brought to Dewan Khera hospital for treatment.
Bhandara' means a generous man who provides food, the name was given by hunger struck hindus during famine of 1899. Mian Fateh Din provided food and shelter to hundreds of people during famine.
Actually their caste was Rai Kharal.
Walid Daad Bhandara visited India in 1963 along with his best friend Ali Gohar Chishti, a landlord from Tibbi village. They met Dilip Kumar in Bombay and Dilip Kumar welcomed them with open arms. He booked suits in Taj Mahal hotel where they stayed more than 35 days. All bills were kindly paid by Dilip Kumar. They also had opportunity, thanks to Dilip's links, to meet famous actors of the age like Nargis and Waheeda Rehman. Waheeda was ready to marry Walidaad and exchanged gifts. The 1965 war ended their relationship.
His cousin Adil Khan Bhandara visited Dewan Khera once and he was welcomed by residents of Dewan Khera.
Waldi Daad Khan has no courage to go and see his haveli, village, streets of Dewan Khera. The sense of loss and trauma of loss is so great that he would break down emotionally to watch his native place again. He says that life has become a bit tragic now.
Once they were among the greatest families of Punjab. He says while tears in his eyes 'I, son of Mian Dilawar Khan Bhandara, grandson of Mian Fateh Din Bhandara, cant see those streets again'.....alas!
He also shares something about Rai Sarang, great grandfather of his father, who was martyred by English for rebellion and joining hands with great freesom fighter Rai Ahmad Khan kharal. Rai Sarang and Rai Ahmad Khan were cousins.
Being the descendents of rebel kharals, English rulers took great care of their families in Dewan Khera and provided them with greater facilities lest they should rebel again.
People of Dewan Khera settled in various villages near Bahawalnagar. Some settled in Machi Singh, the native village of sikh landlords (Sardar Hukam Singh, Sardar Partap Singh, Sarfar Sher Singh, Sardar Amar Singh, Sir Datar Singh).
Walidaad's family settled in 28 SP in 1951.
He shares many more tragic details of death of his sons and daughter.
