𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐖𝐞𝐭𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟐: 𝐖𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞
We present the second in the series of 9 films from this year's celebration of the World Wetland Day, organised on February 5, 2022, by the Wetland Conservation Centre (CMok).
In the lecture by Professor Hans Joosten titled ‘Marshes and wetlands in the testimony of ancient Middle Eastern Cultures’ you will find answers to the following questions:
🔹 What does the ‘Cinderella syndrome’ mean in the context of wetlands and what are its consequences?
🔹 How were peatlands worshipped in pre-Neolithic Europe?
🔹 What role did the wetlands play in the creation myth of Mesopotamia?
Hans Joosten is one of the most important international experts in the field of ecology and conservation of peatlands. He is Professor Emeritus of the University of Greifswald in Germany, co-founder of the Greifswald Mire Centre and Secretary General of the International Mire Conservation Group.
Professor Joosten is the author of over 600 scientific articles and other publications on peatlands. Since 2009, he has been intensively involved in negotiations on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the development of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) guidelines, in particular for the calculation of greenhouse gas emissions from drained peatlands, and in the efforts of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) for climate-responsible management of peatlands.
In addition to the main interest in peatland ecology and conservation in the world, Professor Joosten has for many years been interested in the cultural and historical background of human relations with wetlands. This is reflected in some of his works, including analyses of wetlands perceptions in ancient culture and mythology.
The event was hosted by: Wiktor Kotowski and Magda Galus from CMok.
The film was made thanks to the support of our volunteers Robert Meronka and Michał Chiliński.
The Polish and English subtitles were prepared by our volunteer Magda Jędrzejewska. You can choose the language version by clicking Settings in the Menu at the bottom of the movie.
This year's posters were designed by our volunteer Łukasz Izert.

Przedstawiamy drugi z cyklu 9 filmów z tegorocznych obchodów Światowego Dnia Mokradeł, zorganizowanych 5 lutego 2022 roku przez Centrum Ochrony Mokradeł (CMok).
W wykładzie Profesora Hansa Joostena pt. “Mokradła w świadectwie kultur starożytnego Bliskiego Wschodu" znajdziecie odpowiedzi m.in. na następujące pytania:
Hans Joosten to jeden z najważniejszych międzynarodowych ekspertów w zakresie ekologii i ochrony torfowisk.
Wydarzenie poprowadzili: Wiktor Kotowski i Magda Galus z CMok.
Film powstał dzięki wsparciu naszych wolontariuszy: Roberta Meronki i Michała Chilińskiego.
Napisy do filmów w wersji polskiej i angielskiej przygotowała wolontariuszka Magda Jędrzejewska. Wersję językową możecie zmienić, klikając Settings w menu na dole filmu.
