Hello Paul, I thoroughly enjoyed your videos of the voyage to Venice, what an adventure and many thanks for posting the videos. I also watched your later videos of your trip back to the UK with the Vancouver. As the owner of a 30ft fin keel Dufour, I would love to know what your thoughts are concerning the Nicholson 32 vs the Vancouver 32. Clearly the Vancouver is a more modern boat but how do they compare in their sailing qualities etc? I am looking to upgrade to a long keeler in the next year or so tp make longer passages so would love to know your thoughts. Once again thank you for taking the time to show us your voyages.

Hi, glad you enjoyed my videos hopefully I’ll be doing more once I get sailing again in the new year. I owned the Nicholson 32 for 14 years did an Atlantic crossing and other trips to the canaries, Azores etc. The Nic 32 is a great sea boat and you can pick them up quite reasonably. Nic 32 has an association web site and yearly magazine. Only draw back with a Nic 32 is their long keel, they’re not so easy to close quarter handle when going astern. Takes quite a bit of getting use to especially in a marina. But that’s there only draw back. I went for the Vancouver because it was long keel cutter rigged and it’s nice comfortable saloon, good toilet area and forward berth. Much more spacious and comfortable. But price reflects that’s and they nicely fitted out with teak deck and the saloon wood work is nice. . Lots of dinning room space in the main cabin. Proper chart table, good galley and quarter berth and spacious wet locker. I bought the Vancouver 32 with long distant sailing in mind. Good thing with a 32’ or 9.75m boat are the cost of mooring fees. Vancouver like the Nicholson are good solid safe sea boat. I personally wouldn’t entertain ocean sailing with bolt on keel. Encapsulated keel is for me the ultimate safety. The Vancouver handles better in close quarter situations and she goes astern in much more responsive way to the Nic 32. But if you have a tight financial budget the Nic32 is an excellent buy. Depends on your sailing plans. But Nic 32 owners love them. Paul

@@paulscousedownie Thank you very much for your reply Paul and very useful information. I think I am more tempted by the Vancouver due to layout , cutter rig, shallower draft and general handling capabilities. They are however not too easy to find but I search on a regular basis. Will look forward to your videos in the future. Have a nice Xmas and best wishes for the New Year. Alan

Hi the Nic 32 is wonderful sea boat rather cramped down below though! Vancouver 32 is much more spacious in the main cabin has quarter berth proper chart table sitting area nice sized wet storage area good sized salon table. Proper separate toilet head two berths forward. I have Taylor’s cooker and heater which are both fantastic both use kerosene. Cutter rig is excellent sail configuration. Spinnaker pole attached to mast which easier to deploy than a pole deck mounted. Sailing wise similar to the Nic 32 steady passage maker. Easier to handle close quarter especially going astern. Nic’s were a nightmare in that respect. They only built 65 of Vancouver 32. The Vancouver 34 much more expensive. I like my boats to be under 10 metres because mooring fees. Plan is head off in mid April I’ll be blogging and filming all the war around the world. Website www.marefabulas.com

Thought I’d update my last comment about the Vancouver 32 and the Nicholson 32. The Vancouver 32 is much more spacious in the accommodation area to a Nicholson. The teak deck of the Vancouver nice and comfortable and safe to walk on. Vancouver 32 is a handsome passage maker. However, Barada was dear to my heart as a classic long keel sailing boat. I always loved her low freeboard and shape her of her hull. Camper & Nicholsons knew how to build beautiful sailing boats. The Nic 32 is such wonderful boat safe and dependable in big seas. Both great boats in their own particular way!
