Here in California, I’ve seen 475 miles per hour at the local Superchargers. The long range is great on road trips. On our last road trip of 3200 miles, I asked my wife what she liked most about the trip, she replied, “the journey “. The M3 is a great way to see the USA.

One of the most important keys to what makes Tesla superior over other EVs is the charging network. Other networks are horrible at doing what they do: charging. They are slow, expensive, and when you pull up to one (assuming its not taken), it can take up to 10 minutes before you actually get the charge session started.

You totally described that wrong... The 60kW is the charge rate, you'll start off charging at 118kW then taper off when you get closer to 60-65%. So the minutes you're pulling over 60kW you pay X, for the time you are pulling 60kW or less you pay Y rate per minute. Its not a gauge on the kWh you put into the battery.

This is why I love KZitem videos instead of TV shows. You see unbiased feedback in the form of comments which adds up to the content. Kudos to the author of the video for taking the time to talk at great length about the car, and to you for pointing this out.

kW is power like horsepower. kWh is energy, like gas. So you're paying per kWh not per kW. Also, superchargers in most states bill by the kWh and not by the minute. I think there are laws in some states that don't allow Tesla to sell electricity, so they charge by the minute instead of kWh.

I don’t believe that it costs the lower rate “up to 60kW” of your battery’s capacity and then the higher rate for the last 15kW. That’s what I thought as well at first. I believe it costs the higher rate if its charging at a SPEED of higher than 60kW. You’ll notice in your video that it was charging at a 64-65kW rate and it was costing you 20c/minute, which is the higher cost option. If it falls below 60kW, like if the supercharger is having to share it’s power with the neighbor supercharger, it will drop to 10c/min because it’s taking you longer to charge. They give you a cut in price since you have to wait longer. Regardless, really cool videos. You do a great job.

The only problem I have with the $7,500.00 tax credit is that not everyone can utilize the entire credit. I don't understand why people are assuming they will get the full amount when calculating the expense of the vehicle. Leave the tax credit and rebates out of your calculations until you actually get/use them.

Agreed! I am self employed and take the biz miles deduction so this credit really doesn't even apply and i'm sure many other people are in a similar camp. It would be soooo much better if the feds would just give the money to the manufacture so it would act more like a discount at time of purchase.

I have the long range battery M3, but found on trips that stopping more often for a shorter time (and charging at 300 mph) was better than stopping at the minimal number of stations. Why? because the car charges much slower as it gets closer to full. 20 minutes times three is less than 70 minutes times 2. just saying... The long range battery gives you more flexibility. And why wouldnt you have more. We went to Portland during the fires and were faced with a 100 mile detour. Better to have more battery. Also consider potential re-sale when the time comes.

Tesla is the only EV you can do long distance fairly easy compares with other pure EV's. Whatever Tesla charges to use their Supercharger for Model 3 on long trip I would not worrying about the cost, at the very least it costs less than an ICEV of equivalent performance such as BMW 3 series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4 ...

Realistically even using Tesla’s trip planer the M3 paid supercharging cost is equal to a 31 MPG ICE so while you should enjoy you car the saving money thing is just not a good reason This is right on there trip planing page were a 714 mile trips saves 16 dollars over a 27 MPG ICE car On the east coast I 95 superchargers will still be sparse until at least late 2019 and to make the trip from 11725 to 29568 requires a series of 90 mile hops as you get south of DC and get into the hilly territory There our currently no superchargers in the 11725 area and none in 29568 so you must home charge to start and end your trip

I honestly want to see where you got those numbers from? From their real life travel using the superchargers, they went over 400 miles and spent $12. You would need to be getting nearly 100 mpg to reach that in a gas car with the prices where they are now. In the southeast, it is around $2.75 - $3 per gallon. With a 714 mile trip, getting exactly 27 mpg the whole way at $2.75 per gallon, you are looking at about $73 for gas. At 31 mpg, you are looking at a little over $63. Even at $57, where the $16 savings over a 27 mpg car shows, you are equaled to at least 35 mpg. However, their testing shows that they would be able to go 714 miles for only about $20. I'm sure that it is different for different locations. Just curious what the real life numbers are for you.

I was a afraid of that as I average about 32 ,000 miles per year so I would be out of warranty fairly soon. I have friends who own the Model S but do not put that many miles on. They all have had issues with motor failures and the expensive door handles. I work in automation repair and have for nearly 36 years and I have learned thing get better so I assume the same thing will happen with electric cars, I am hoping to own one over the next 10 years, in 3 yeara I will not be driving so much. Take care

Even for long trips i'm not sure I agree with the logic of spending an extra $9k for the long range battery notwithstanding the tax credit. The charge rate is nearly the same for the various size battery packs, and most of time one will only charge to about 80% at superchargers to maximize the charge speed, therefor the benefit is mainly on the initial charge to 100% and a little more range between 10%-80% charge. Furthermore, The vast majority do not commute more than 200 miles in a day, so the base model 3 in my opinion is a no brainier. Plus Elon recently announced that their is new battery tech coming which will lower the weight of the pack likely pushing the range past 220 miles.
@anthonypelchat
6 жыл бұрын
Also, adding the tax credit is wrong on this one. First, not everyone can the full tax break, though most should. Any who buy outside the US have different tax options as well. Two, while you can currently get the $7500 tax in the US for the long range version, the short range version should get the $3500 tax break for a while. That makes the difference while counting both tax breaks at $5000.

That isn't really true. The Model 3 LR has similar performance (0-60 time, etc) to a BMW 340i, which has a base price of $49k. Once you add-on things the Model 3 has like heated seats, navigation, back-up camera, and driving assistance package you are at $56k. Plus, you will not get the $7,500 federal tax credit nor any state incentives with a BMW 3 series or A4.
@SodaPopin5ki
6 жыл бұрын
How much do you spend on gas a year? Average annual miles in the US is 12,000. A4 gets about 32mpg combined. 375 gallons x $3.50 = $1313 per year. Most people keep their car about 8 years, so that's $10,500 over the life of the car spent on gas. You can expect to spend about 1/4 to 1/3 of that on electricity charging a Model 3. So $7000 or so in savings. If you got your Model 3 this year, you also get up to $7500 tax credit, and various other state rebates. Also, it's great never having to go to a gas station.

@@SodaPopin5ki love how Teslanomics think they are saving !! divide those 7k by years and weeks. Not eating out will save you more in 8 years lol ....Also Tesla guys never mention the costs of the Teslas tires and insurance. A friend is raving how A Tssla model 3 is like buying a 25k car....over the years!!! I dont want to buy a 35k car ..and say ohhh but in reality in 8 years it will become like a 25k car because of gas !! A 25k car is a 25k car out of the dealership !!! not over the years. Also you all tesla Asume mechanical failure will occur over the owner ship ..Sorry But that just not true ...not all cars are lemons ..In that case add body repairs to Teslas !!! then we talk savings lol ...Oil changes have gotten better like 3 times a year or less. I do mine at walmart for 35 bucks (only because I want to my wife small suv once a year or about 10k miles ) ...3 times a year. Ohh and I spend about 10 dlls on gas a week more or less depending on how heavy is my foot lol. Also Teslas have maintenance every year or so. How much is that ??
@SodaPopin5ki
5 жыл бұрын
@@casrogue Not eating out would mean I'd have to eat the food I cook, which is not worth it. Besides, you can say that about any car...or any purchase. You spend $10 on gas a week. I drive 17,000 miles a year, and would spend $36 a week with an A4. Clearly, you do not drive enough to need a fuel efficient car. As far as maintenance on the Model 3, the schedule says to rotate tires every 6250 miles, which you can do anywhere, or at Tesla for $60 (though mine was free for some reason), and change the brake fluid and cabin air filter every 2 years. That's it. Not sure how much that will cost, as I haven't had the car that long. Brake pads should last the life of the car, due to regenerative braking (same with my old Prius and Volt).
