Hei!
Today we begin a discussion of the passive, a vast and important grammatical topic in Finnish that requires special attention.
Let's start with a couple of suggestions:
- Poika pelaa jalkapalloa - The boy plays football.
- Täällä pelataan jalkapalloa - Football is played here.
The sentences are similar in that each of them has the same action - a game of soccer. The only difference is who exactly performs this action.
- Poikaa pelaa jalkapalloa - The boy plays football. The first sentence is very clear. The action of a soccer game is performed by a boy.
- Täällä pelataan jalkapalloa - Football is played here. In the second sentence, we can no longer answer the question of who exactly plays football, because this has not been said.
This is what is the main feature of passive sentences in the Finnish language - the absence of a specific actor (or subject). In a passive sentence, information about this person is either unknown or not important at all.
