For me, Stephen Sondheim achieves with his music what Shakespeare achieves with his plays and sonnets: pretty much all that it is to be human is to be found there. Love, hate, jealousy, lust, strength, weakness, cruelty and so on are all there. Mankind is so well served in having the legacy of his music, which serves so well perhaps in holding up a mirror to us all. Thank you, Mr. Sondheim, for sharing your gifts with us all. RIP 🌹

The way Donna Murphy just shatters as she says, "Once more," gets me more than anything else in this scene. It's the release after so much anguish and rejection, the feeling of suddenly and unexpectedly getting everything you wanted and not knowing how to handle it.... This is a breathtaking performance by both actors.

This scene is almost too intense to watch. The way that Fasca's voice breaks as she speaks. When Giorgio says "I feel so much, but I'm not really sad" and Fasca's reaction. "No one has truly loved me like you have Fasca"......"No wisdom, no judgement, no caution no blame."......"Not pretty or safe or easy..." Man, really tear inducing stuff.

Donna Murphy was stunning in this. It was easily one of the greatest performances in the history of musical Theatre.....I'd even go as far to say the greatest of the 1990s. Jere Shea just disappeared after this it seemed but his work in this scene is absolutely heartbreaking, especially when she starts singing...and then Donna's "Once more!" always pierces me.

Turns out Shea, who also appeared on Broadway as a Sky Masterson understudy in 1992’s Guys and Dolls, traded fame for family in 1998, when he left his role in the Broadway-bound musical High Society and packed up his wife Elaine and two children and settled near relatives in the suburbs of Boston, MA. “The more work and success I got in the business, the less I saw my family,” he remembered. “I wanted to be around my kids. But now they’re 21 years old and I get to go off and focus on what I love to do again.”

OMG...what an AMAZING scene! She rises above brilliant and bares a heart and soul that is so very rarely ever experienced in performance. His face when she says, "All this happiness, coming when there's so little time" breaks my heart. Sondheim remains the genius; and these performances are emblazoned in the memories for those who were fortunate enough to witness them.

Even with all the classics Sondheim has written, to me Passion is his best. I remember reading that either while writing Passion or shortly before, he had met a man and, according to him, fallen in love for the first time in his life. I think, because of that, there is just something different about this score. It’s so dark but also very romantic. And I’m so glad that the show was filmed with almost the entire original cast, especially the three leads.

Glad to see so many supportive comments for this idiosyncratic gem which is a personal favourite. Donna Murphy's interpretation of Fosca is non pareil, as someone below said, one of the great Broadway performances of the 90s if not simply one of the great Broadway performances. I also have to add that, yes, the acting style - subdued, subtle - is a rarity these days. Acting for musicals now seems much broader, less nuanced (this is not so much a criticism, more just an observation that there has been a sea change in the aesthetics of style); the tender, moody tones of the performances here (esp. from Murphy, Shea, and Mazzie) are sorely missed. A great musical for the risks it took - in form, style, subject matter, artfulness, and resolution.

Though impossible to truly say, because each stand apart, and the magic Hugh Wheeler accomplished with Christoper Bond's play allowed Mr. Sondheim to create one of the great operas of all time in "Sweeney Todd", Lapine and Sondheim did something that is extremely rare with Passion; they told a story that had not been told before. Relationships are so badly portrayed in plays and fiction, all the time. Even the best playwrights make the women fantasies and the men gallant, with a few very shining examples, yet even then this opera shatters all expectations and is real, which is why is why it was so much hated I believe during the Broadway run. Stories are supposed to show us what we are: young, beautiful, vital, always vigorous and free of defects and deformities, carefree, enshrined in the palace of everlasting virtue and Giorgio and Clara together on the altar of passion. Certainly not...well the truth is, we are all just as likely to be taken with eccentricity, grotesquery, obsession, deformity, the beauties of the inner eye, though to admit that is so shameful that a play about it must make SOMEONE scream "die, Fosca!" to break the logjam of hate and ice and fear of perhaps loving her exactly because of her dogged imperfect relentless knowing pursuit, and perfect forgiveness of Giorgio as she knows he loves even as he brutally, self-loathingly runs her spirt through. How can an audience sit with that feeling without screaming with their fury? What- are they supposed to express the tears they never allow themselves to endure? The poison of love, of real self esteem? Thin ice indeed, and why this is a masterpiece non pareil. I do not think I will see another work of its like in my day. My Mom said yesterday, "I think what I realized finally is that Stephen Sondheim is really a Shakespearean talent." I was really surprised, because - I have studied his works a lot more thoroughly than she has, and it hadn't occurred to me that we are living in the time of a man whose talent comes only around really only every 300 or 400 years. He is very modest and right to acknowledge that he has relied on the talents of magnificent collaborators, but Stephen is the man who writes the words that transcend the times. He makes characters who cannot sing sing, he makes scenes that would not pass soar, he makes Kingdoms Float, White Pages Roar With Color, and The Ugliest Men Sing The Most Beautiful Songs - and truly ugly men sing because they have to lie. Thanks Mr. Sondheim.

Beautifully expressed and in my infinitesimal knowledge, I must agree. I thought of Mr. Sondheim as this era's Gershwin, but Shakespeare is perhaps more fitting, more equitable. To paint such cavasses of brilliance, evil and heart-wrenching beauty, to lift and transport the psyche and soul to places we have yet to dream of...this is genius, extraordinary virtuosity.
