The classroom scene becomes even more funnier and awkward when you realise that the Historical Beatrice wasn't in love with Dante Alighieri. She only met and interacted twice with him in her life. The love is totally one sided and because of her passing at 25, she never read anything he wrote. She probably totally forgot he existed, yet in Dante's head she became the perfect muse.
@inthought02

They were also the same age, there was never any weird pedophilia stuff between them since the first time they met each other, I believe they were both like nine?? @@pixiestxNyomouf I hope you don't mind me replying but yeah, he did meet her when she was a minor but a lot of historians believe that the Beatrice Dante refers to is Beatrice Portinari, the daughter of a banker and that she was only a few months younger than Dante, but they were both born in the same year. From Wikipedia: "According to Dante, he first met Beatrice when his father took him to the Portinari house for a May Day party. They were both nine years old at the time, though Beatrice was a few months younger than Dante. "

THAT'S THE MAIN THING THAT CONFUSES ME. As an Italian, they make us study Dante a lot at school. And from what I remember teachers always specified that Beatrice NEVER loved Dante. The guy just looked at her from afar and said "yes das a good muse I love this girl" when Beatrice just... Minded her own business :,D That's so funny to me I'm sorry. The fact that here they wanted to make it seem like a "love story" when it's one-sided love is so funny. Also, as other comments said, they had the same age ._.

If there was any justice in this world Gabriel would have been the antagonist, and the love story would have been between the main chick, Julia, and the bland but genuinely good dude (Paul). Like can you imagine if she thought she loved this guy when she was young and naive, but then grew up and realized he was an emotionally abusive asshole and got over him. But then, as she started to fall in love with a new classmate, he reappears. Now he's an official authority figure in her life, still obsessed with his "angel" who he still infantilizes and attempts to control. And her scholarship depends on him... Just saying, sounds like a modern gothic romance/horror story to me.

10:34 "Dante met her when she was 18". Well if you're talking about the real Dante you're technically right. But you're missing the big point that he was under 18 too. They were both 9 years old when they first met and Beatrice was only a couple of months younger than him which is significantly less creepy than what's depicted in the film (it's rare that a love story from the 13th century is less creepy than one from the 21st century). If this is supposed to be a modern day relationship that parallels the historical Dante and Beatrice than why couldn't you make them the same age like their real life counterparts? Why'd you have to do this?

Also it was completely false ? All but 15 minutes of research have shown me a completely different picture of Dante and Beatrice than the one described in this bogus lecture like… She was EIGHT when he fell in love with her (he was nine, no pedo here we good) and no evidence seemed to show that she reciprocated his feelings at any points. They met 3 times I believe outside of the falling in love incident, once on the street of Florence where she said hello and HE DIDN’T EVEN ANSWER (bc he was overwhelmed, bot bc he was snobbing her but like she didn’t know), once at a marriage feast and the 3rd time I cannot remember, he describes all of these in great lengths in La Vita Nuova anyways -I haven’t read it yet. Beatrice was married to a dude called Simone de something, one of the most powerful man of Florence then and anyways she died 3 years after the marriage. It’s unclear to me whether of not Dante was married after her death or if he was fully married whilst she was alive but at some point he also got married. So basically, we can assume that Dante was at best a childhood friends to Beatrice who turned out to be really weird later on in life, that she wasn’t interested and was already otherwise engaged. Nothing to do with what they say in the film

It also didn’t work out because they only met twice: the first time when they were both nine and the second later on when they were eighteen and he responded to her greeting by LITERALLY running away because seeing her filled him with such joy. Mind you, he’d been married for 2-3 years by this second meeting. This man had a wife and 4 kids and they never even get a mention.

i watched the first movie a couple days ago and they make it very clear that she was 17 (or under) when they met. Bc she mentions that she started learning Italian when she was 17 bc of a friend, and then in the flashback, Gabriel says smth in Italian and she doesn't understand. So that told me that she was either 17 or under which... yikes

That awkwardness in the classroom reminded me of an instance in college. 2 of my roommates, their friends, and I all ended up in the same History class. The professor was a fairly young guy with a wife and kid. He was like "the cool professor" to students. There was this girl that sat next to me who obviously had a crush on him. Very brown-nosey, always raised her hand eagerly. We never thought too much of it. One night, I think around midterms, we hear that she's had a full breakdown and disappeared. I didn't know until the next day when my job asked me to cover her shift. She had been missing for like a day after taking her truck. People started poking around and talking. And while studying, one of our other roommates, completely unaware of our connection to the class and girl, walked in and said "Hey, did you hear about the girl who's messing around with one of the professors? She had like a meltdown" They found her on the side of the highway later, but she never came back to class and the "cool professor" turned into such an asshole. It felt so stuffy in that class the rest of the semester. And at the end of it, he mentioned how he had "been offered a job in *insert another state's univ" and that this would be his last semester. The campus was buzzing. I had only seen these things on TV!

The movie's insistence on telling the audience that Gabriel and Julia's relationship shares a lot of similarities with Dante and Beatrice's relationship is deeply funny. The historical figure presumed to be the inspiration for the literary character of Beatrice (Beatrice, or Bice, Portinari) was married to another man, Simone de' Bardi, therefore Dante had no choice but to only admire her from afar, and she is presumed to have died quite young. Dante's admiration for and idolization of her often appears in his written works, but in real life (according to Dante's Vita Nova) the two had a single interaction between them (she once greeted him on the street), and not a single word was ever spoken between the two. Beatrice is also presumed to have been the same age as Dante or one year younger than him.

In thermodynamics, dissipation is the process of transforming energy from an initial form to a final form, where the capacity of the final form to transfer energy from an object via the application of force is less than the original form the energy came in.
