I saw this video and was exited to try build our own greenhouse but then remembered I would need a build permit for something like this. So back to store bought polycarbonate greenhouse with anchors that's considered a moveable structure hence no permit.

Where are you based? A lot of places consider a build temporary if the supporting posts are not concreted in.

Great build cost breakdown. On the OSB plywood. I've been using OSB on exterior grade projects over the years and I have found it pretty resilient to weather, if it's stained or painted with an exterior grade paint. I've even used it on trailers and truck boxes in harsh winters and salted roads and held help through it. All in all a great choice for the cost.

Thank you. Feedback on using OSB was mixed as I was expecting. But as you say and as I thought if it's well looked after it should be fine. I've not noticed any worsening of the boards this year after the initial settling in.

This turned out really good. Did you use plans or do you have plans? I'm curious about the roof angle and measurements.
@BalticHomesteaders

Umm I think it was about 51% I need to check next week. I sort of had plans, well I did for the trusses. I wanted to make sure I could make 1 truss from a 6m piece of timber whilst at the same time maximising the height and depth and getting the angle roughly right. If you ping me an email I’ll send you the pdf’s I made (email in about us tab).

Investment theory: "Is the total cost of the greenhouse worth it?" It will be interesting how much the greenhouse extends the growing season with food measured in kilos and calories/joules.

Yeah that’s maybe a scientific answer but of course there’s not much to compare against for a true scientific approach. Results will have to be anecdotal which isn’t ideal. I know from evidence this year (see mistakes video) that tomatoes survived much longer than in the other greenhouse and I’m hoping that will be the case earlier this year when getting tomatoes (and other things) out and establishing them.

Thanks Gary for a very informative video. The cost is more or less what I would have expected. Other factors maybe not in the evaluation to me are, food quality, convenience and sustainability.

I pay £100 per annum each for the rent of two allotments near my home. They are each the size of a tennis court but with huts etc the growing space is less than that. Their value to me however, in terms of my wellbeing , mental and physical health is way beyond what a profit and loss account could measure. For example, both allotments are flooded right now but I go down every two days to feed the wild birds. I love being there.

@michaelmcclafferty3346 yes good point. I think when I originally started on this road I was quite annoyed that many were building extremely expensive PSGs that seemed to be vanity projects rather than real spaces to grow food and I wanted to prove it was possible to build with a small reasonable budget.

@@BalticHomesteaders I think that your whole approach to this Gary has been very grounded and motivating. I have two greenhouses on my allotments but I need to improve my growing skills in there. Your videos are very helpful to anyone who wants to build one well on a budget.

I hope to enjoy the use of a Chinese greenhouse, metal double framed, with internal insulation blankets. If it provides less than 20 years use, l will consider it a poor investment. My principal reason for this route is to improve my food security, eating things in season in a controlled environment.👍

@@BalticHomesteaders No, l want to avoid Alibaba the app is probably spyware, so l search with different engines, l am giving myself a year to find an importer, l am thinking Canada/ US. The cost will reflect this, hence l would be disappointed if it did not deliver 20 years of use. Buy once, cry once.😉

It's amazing build, but I won't build it for my self. In the matter of fact the green house as a concept is highly questionable for me. I mean yes they extend growing season. But on othe hand tomatoes are not that tasty like in open air. What I decided for myself is to buy small greenhouse just for several early tomatoes and few cucumbers... But the main crop I will grow in my garden like last year....

@@BalticHomesteaders Well I'm groing tomatos in field for several years now. What I learned is that real (not F1) varietys don't care too much for fogs or disease (because wind is real benfiting factor). And tomatoes has way way more sugars in it.
