Having been the person who moved away I soooo sooo related to the moment when Nora tells her husband that her old friend is "So Korean, but not like American Korean but Korean Korean. . . " And at that moment I realized we're kind of watching a split screen where Hae Sung is having a wistful romantic fantasy of "what if?" Na Young is have a very pragmatic, actual rooted in reality fantasy of "what if?" Just beautifully done

Saw this last night. Beautiful movie that explores not must the "sliding doors" concept, but also the immigrant experience and how immigrants can feel pulled in two different cultural directions. It also shows how in relationships there can be a side to our partner that feels alien to us and we can never truly grasp.

This is my most anticipated film of the summer. Side note to your review, I love how "Sliding Doors" has become an established shorthand for this kind of movie. As near as I can recall, it wasn't that popular of a movie, at the box office at least. And yet, it's become one of those movies that's in the same category as "Groundhog Day" and "Matrix" and "Die Hard" where one movie represents an entire category of films. And it's even used in non-movie conversations. I hear "It's a sliding doors sort of thing" all the time, and it always means "two or more versions of something playing out in parallel." I find it fascinating. I watched Sliding Doors again recently expecting it to be way more iconic than I remembered it, but no. It was just as unremarkable as I remembered and I'm kinda baffled how it became such a common touchstone.

I'm glad you guys enjoyed it. I personally didn't think the movie worked for me. The dialogue wasn't really deep or thought provoking for the majority of it until the two characters spoke Korean at the bar to each other talking about what could have been. I enjoyed the cinematography and thought the shot composition in some scenes were great, but there wasn't anything the characters were saying or doing that was interesting. Found the characters kind of bland too. I guess I just wanted something like the before trilogy. Anyway, it was great to hear your thoughts.

Incredibly great week for movies. This past week, I had a lot of free time, and I watched Spiderverse, You Hurt My Feelings, No Hard Feelings, and Past Lives. All really great, and I think without question, Past Lives was the best out of all them. I loved the In-Yun anecdote throughout. I related so much to this movie, as I also had a similar immigrant life, and lost a lot of friends from back when I was 10 years old. The ending scene, where she walks him to the uber, and walks back to the stoop and then lets out all the tears...wow, incredibly cathartic. This is a classic.

Same here, absolutely loved this movie, and a part of it is how I could relate to the immigrant experience described in it. I loved the scene where the three main characters are in the bar and one is translating the conversation by summarizing it, badly, until after a few more sentences they just give up and start talking among themselves - that's a situation I think that universally all immigrants have experienced. :D

Watched it today and loved it, walking out emotionally shaken (and still am). The movie's ending, and to some extent the "In-Yeon" theme, reminded me of another great romance movie made in Taiwan called "You're the Apple of My Eye". Anecdotally, this applies to true friendships too. I grew up with my childhood buddy whose half-Korean, until he immigrated to the US (abruptly due to family issues) at around 15yr of age and like in the movie, we lost in touch for a while. I went on to study in a different country, but also made effort to "stalked" him on Friendster (pre-Facebook era) hoping that one day we could re-establish connection. Like in the movie, we finally got to meet after more than a 12yrs of not seeing each other, in Seoul! We are still good friends to this day. Definitely a lot of bittersweet knowing that neither of us are going to give up our own lives to be with the other.

I don’t know how I feel about this movie. The concept is pretty simple - the what if/alternative possibilities story…. It is very relatable, especially after some trauma, we would question ourselves - what if I did this or made some other choice? The main actors were great. There are some good lines, but not as good as the Before trilogy. I really love the line from the husband that Alonso quoted. Best line from the movie - funny and poignant or bittersweet? Spoiler talk…. If the guy is taking an Uber at the end, why are they walking away so far from the apartment building? The director could have changed it to catching a cab to solve this. There are still taxi in NYC… 😂😂😂. This happened at night time, but the guy is still riding the Uber at daybreak? They are driving to JFK international airport, not upstate…. It does not take 8 hours to reach the airport… hahaha…. The director could keep the night scene with a reflection of NY skyline on the Uber window passenger window as the guy continues to think about all the what ifs or the discussion they had in the past few hours. Drop a good soundtrack, and I think it would have a more powerful punch at the end. And have the guy smile at the end which would contrast with the woman crying to the husband. This would indicate an arc in the characters. Greta is more driven and less emotional to relationships while Hae Sung always seem to regret losing her whether at 12 or 24 years old, but he respected her choices. Having him smile and her crying would show changes in their characters.

They probably walk down the street a bit to have a moment of privacy away from her husband. As for why it's morning, they did stay out pretty late, maybe it was the middle of the night, and by the time he's on his way to the airport, the sun has started coming up. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

@@BreakfastAllDay Thanks for entertaining my questions. I guess it could be middle of the night, but it is strange to hang out with someone so late especially if they are not that close. They would need an Uber if it is 3 or 5 am. But the husband did not go down with them. The husband only came down later. There was no privacy issue. But small issues. Still trying to figure the female mind... hahaha... Her crying at the end is both surprising and not surprising... hahaha...

I honestly feel the same way. I just got out of the movie and while I enjoyed it for some of the scenes, I felt as whole it didn't really work. There were a lot of lingering shots that were well composed, but didn't really add any nuance or character development. It's mainly just people talking about random subjects, but nothing really deep is being said. I felt like the only conversation that was deep was when they were all in the bar and they were talking in Korean about their past life together and what could have been. The before trilogy still reigns supreme. They are the best romance/dialogue driven films of all time.

@brianng8350

@mhlkta Did he? There was a long period of awkward silence. They spoke a bit, he hugged her, and then got into the Uber. If he smiled, it was very subtle. On the ride, he was just looking out and contemplating? It would be nice if he chuckled or laughed like he had a break thru in his character. But that is from my American perspective; the movie played out more consistent with the reserved Korean culture.

I liked this movie. Aesthetically it looked good and had some solid scenes but it was surprisingly quite shallow and I thought the characters weren't very well-developed. It surprised me a bit because so many raved about it and despite being someone with a somewhat similar experience to Nora, I didn't identify with her at all. I think there are a lot of better movies in the same vein like Moonlit Winter by Lim Dae Hyung, Love Letter and Last Letter by Shunji Iwai to name a few. Liked the review though!

Spoiler Alert! I think at the very end... Hae Sung found closure. He was never rude to Nora during the entire film... but while waiting for the Uber on the final scene, he tells Nora "You are the one who always leaves". I never left". This is absolutely true as Nora leaves him as children to go to Canada and then she leaves him again when reconnected 12 years after to focus on her career. Those words from Hae Sung broke her (literally) when she (once again) becomes a "crybaby" in the arms of Arthur. Wow... powerful stuff!!!

The movie could be more “full” by adding a few more short scenes to describe the tough life of adjusting to the immigration and Nora’s family dynamic. I can picture the subplot of Nora’s sister, marrying a traditional Korean guy and wanting to move back to Korea. It will be a sharp contrast to Nora’s ambitious nature and wanting to fully embrace the life in America. This is a real situation as immigrants have different view on their life in the new country. Right now to me the movie is a bit flat and neglecting some of the potentials to make it more interesting…maybe it’s a budget issue that they can not flush out the story more.

I kind of liked it but I'm not as impressed as everyone seems to be. My score would be a 6.8. It's an indie hit, though, and I think it's because of the very commercial lost love element. For me, the film didn't have enough story for its length. This could have easily been a short. Correct me if I'm wrong, but when critics use the word "assured," they mean that the filmmaker abandons all rules of filmmaking that make for tight storytelling, and instead take all the time in the world to tell their story. Am I right? If so, I wouldn't call that assured. Rules are there for a reason, and it takes many years of hard work to master those rules. Just about every first film by an indie director abandons filmmaking rules. But not because of assuredness, but because of inexperience. The film is interesting but overall felt amateurish.

Ahh … so refreshing to see a movie with no CGI or SFX , no characters screaming at each other, no sex or violence and no melodramatic acting. Just a slice of ordinary life with deep philosophical implications .

I personally didn’t connect with the movie at all. I found myself pretty angry with the main characters by the end.

Interesting, what made you angry?

The villain is Nora, She chose to disconnect from Hae. and also chose to spend time with another man that was not her husband. If roles were reversed people would be in uproar that a man would be hanging out with a women that was not his wife.

I love Greta Lee. It’s a shame she is currently trapped in the awful The Morning Show. It’s been a while since i’ve witnessed such a waste of a great cast on television.

Ha, we are recapping The Morning Show on our Patreon! Greta Lee is great in it, as always. We can't tear ourselves away from this glossy trash: www.patreon.com/bfastallday

i enjoy the final scenes. but i'm going to be unpopular here and brutal. this movie exemplifies what a weak man is. hae song too chicken to take what he wants and cowards in the dreamy comfort of friend zone. arthur must feel emasculated to let his wife be alone with a rival multiple times. come on.

seems like a bit of a downer honestly! the trailer and these clips conveys a drab, downbeat, pedestrian tone, people shuffling through life with very little spark or passion, total salaryman vibe. Give me something inventive and exhilarating like Fury Road, summer is here! seems more of an October/February movie really. at its core I perceive a maudlin, stagey sentimentality that really doesn't do anything for me.

It is not maudlin or stagey. It's actually exhilarating in its own way.
