Thanks for watching! What are other reasons people might not be able to just "get over" past trauma?

People are sometimes ashamed of what they’ve been through and they find it very difficult to share and so they keep it bottled up but it sometimes it trickles out into our current circumstances.

Great point Pauline! Do you think Shane makes it harder for folks to heal from past traumatic experiences?

Will Bratt Oh Absolutely! The only way to heal is to face it and come to terms with the fact that it happened and that you’re not alone. The moment we can do that we can start a dialogue with a professional and healing will begin. It’s a hard pill to swallow but when we decide to live in our truth we can then be free.

great video. Forgiveness, wash, rinse repeat ❤ Trauma is a life-long burden. Never goes away.....resurfaces and have to keep forgiving and forgetting...myself and others. I've had a lot of trauma and feel as though I'll never fully function properly. I've had therapy but at 60, I don't think I'm ever going to get much better than I am....... Just live the best I can each day.

Great video. I believe letting go, forgiveness and the desire to detach from the past moments can help. I do think that it's always a part of you and comes up when things trigger it. I am not sure you can eliminate this totally from your life but you can manage it as far as being aware when they come up and controlling your actions and thoughts. But also having a sense of compassion for yourself when they come up. Not getting made at yourself etc. Love this video! :)

Thanks for sharing your perspective! I think it’s a really down to earth view that our experiences, good or bad, are always a part of us.

I didn't ever want to retire because I Loved my job!, and felt so secure. All my friends, and workplace activities I look forward to....... then, a extremely stressful event happened,.. and I thought I had to retire because I wasn't thinking correctly. ( Cognitive Distortion thinking). I couldn't believe what I done!,.. I just want to go back to my job!, and my lifestyle!!... I went into shock!, and into depression with anxiety and insomnia. EVERYDAY, all I think about is going back, and all the coulda shouda wouldas!!... my health has gotten worse, I am unable to move on. I lost interest in all my hobbies and activities. I also don't keep in touch with family or friends. I ruminate all day over my mistake and how it shouldn't be this way. I didn't need to retire,... and it's all my fault.! I have self hate, lost desire to live, and don't appreciate life. This traumatic life altering event, took the life out of me..... and I cannot let go.

Such a great video! The only way I know how to deal with trauma is to forgive yourself. Doesn't always work but it's a start.

Wow! What a great video. I think one other reason why it may be difficult to get over trauma is that the traumatic experience defines the person. Not sure if that makes sense. If someone thinks about him/herself as a victim, he/she will probably stay a victim instead of assuming a different role. Does that make sense?

I think people can't just "get over" past trauma because it's literally embedded in our cells. I believe we need to consciously move our bodies with the intention of releasing stuck emotions. We've got issues in our tissues and we must move to get them out.

That’s a great point that we didn’t mention! From your experience, what do you recommend people try when it comes to helpful healing movement practices?

Thanks for asking! Shaking is a really powerful practice that helps to release the issues that get stuck in our tissues. I also created something called Ugly Awkward Dancing, which is focusing on moving how your body wants to move without any kind of prescription. It's about how it feels, not how it looks. Guess it would be a good topic for a video :)

Great video. Thanks for sharing the information:) I would have to say that the age of the person who experienced trauma is relevant. As adults, our foundation has already been laid...in other words, our morals, values and beliefs about ourselves, our value, our self worth, sense of belonging & acceptance, our qualities & how we relate to others has been established. That in itself may affect how we respond to trauma as an adult. But as a child the traumatic experience will likely become part of the foundation which forms the fundamental beliefs of that individual . I believe this presents a unique challenge because that child may later learn that what they experienced isnt "the norm" and doesn't happen to everyone. But when you've experienced dysfunction or traumatic events as a child, changing your thoughts about it and "getting over it" is even more challenging if you've never experienced anything different.

This was so interesting! I struggle to get over past trauma when I feel like it was my fault or that I was being stupid. It's more of a shameful feeling that keeps me from getting over it.

Great video! Such a thorough explanation of struggles that people with past trauma face! Touching on points 3 and 4, I would say that forgiveness plays a major part in being able to let go, whether it’s forgiving someone else or yourself.

Such a great video. You cover the topic of past trauma so well in the video. Sometimes we think we get over something negative that’s happened but then it can be triggered and resurface. Very interesting subject indeed . Thank you for sharing.

This is so relevant especially in the world we live today. With people being so hurt and putting their hurts out there to affect others, I believe things would be better if we knew that you can just get over it, you have to get helped through it. Great information

Not a fan of this video. I understand that the video is on understanding *why* but without any resources as to what to do about it from a therapist, it is lame. Remarkably, I feel worse than before I saw this.
