It’s two years since I began work on “Into The Light”. Making that album was an incredible experience. I got to sit in a Nashville studio with a world class producer, the best musicians working today, and play songs I’d written in my bedroom. After every take I had to pinch myself. Each track was recorded live and I was so happy with the organic sound we were getting, but I had one or two ideas for adding a little magic afterwards.
I remember talking with my producer Billy Harvey about adding strings to the tracks “Katie” and “Just a Venial Sin”. He said, “I know the guy”.
Dave Eggar is a cellist in New York, and is one of the most recorded cellists on the planet. He’s worked with Coldplay, Beyoncé, Bon Jovi, Evanescence, The Who, Pearl Jam, Tony Bennett, Josh Groban, Fall Out Boy, Kathleen Battle, Ray Lamontagne, Frank Ocean, Corinne Bailey Rae and many more. Despite having worked for so long, with so many household names, he responded to Billy’s call with childlike enthusiasm. This is both a testament to Billy’s reputation and to Dave’s character. His love for songs and music was palpable. I was so thrilled he agreed to get involved.
Two days later he sent back the arrangements, and they brought me to tears. You can hear the final mixes on my record, but I decided to strip it down and let you hear his full arrangement for “Katie” here. I’m just playing along.
His parts brought so much to my Album. He brought “Katie” to life. It became the elegant waltz I’d always imagined. In “Just a Venial Sin”, he tied everything together. The gritty rock song became epic and sophisticated. Dave Eggar is a rare talent, and I feel very lucky to have his name on the “Into the Light” credits.
Thank you Dave, and Billy!
