Pat Kirkwood was born in Pendleton, near Manchester and was the daughter of a shipping clerk. She was educated at Levenshulme High School and at 14, entered a talent contest at Ramsey, Isle of Man and was asked to sing on the BBC's Children's Hour.
Immediately before the war she was featured as one of the singers with Jack Hylton's Orchestra and was featured in Black Velvet at the London Hippodrome where she sang Cole Porter's song "My Heart Belongs to Daddy". Kirkwood was cast in the film Band Waggon (1939) and Come on George! (1940) and continued to perform throughout the rest of the war in West End pantomimes and shows.
An attempt to extend her career in America didn't work out and her return to work in London was hampered by the gossip of an affair with Prince Philip. However, she eventually returned to success in the West End during her marriage to Hubert Gregg.
