Wow. I saw the PMG perform this song at least 8 times, and it was the highlight of the concert, IMO. This full orchestral arrangement is a stunning fresh take on it. The whole thing is captivating, but at 6:54 it feels like the orchestra has lifted off into outer space. Bravo!

The guitar arpeggio in this tune is one of very few things that makes me cry almost everytime. You can feel every human emotion in it: sadness and happiness at the same time in an inexplicable way. Stunning and unwordly at its highest ethereal level possible.

What an easy song to count time to... 123, 12, 123, 12, 12, 123, 123, 12, 12 for the intro before it slips into other time signitures for the solo section and breakdowns. Hands down my most favorite, intricate piece of music ever.

But Rodby,Wertico,Nana,Pedro Aznar, the early Jaco, and the list goes on and everybody who watches this video already knows who are those guys. sorry my english. much love. God bless Pat.he change my approach to music forever.

The first (the clapping) is 12/8 and 10/8 , in a two-bar pattern : 3+2+3+2+2 / 3+3+2+2 . The next (the one with the vocalism) is in 22/8: four times 5/8 plus 2/8 at the end (the latter is easy audible). Then it goes to 4/ 4 etc ..

It also could be a 6/4 and 5/4 with the 3+2+3+2+2/ 3+3+2+2 being eight notes . My little sister's marching band did this song for part of their show, it truly is an amazing piece depicting the first circle of hell :) They hated and loved it at the same time. Pat Metheny is quite the mastermind

That's the great thing about improvisation. The improviser is totally allowed to take liberty with the energy level/style/whatever he wants to pretty much. I think it's fine. He started out simple and built the energy pretty well. Subtlety, my friend.
