Great performance by the Pat Metheny Group. I've seen them in concert many times in the late seventies(New York), and they were always great whether as the opening act or the main performers. I met Mark Egan in the late eighties at Charrette in New York(33rd Street)when I worked there. He was a nice guy. I also saw many Weather Report concerts with and without Jaco from the seventies to the eighties. Last saw Jaco with his big band Word Of Mouth Orchestra(I believe in '81)in New York, before he passed. So many great musical innovators from the seventies and eighties have passed R.I.P.

My own renditions of this song tend to gravitate towards a faster tempo. It just flows better. I like that Mark Egan got more time to shine, as it's a song dedicated to bassist and all.

My opinion the studio take of this song is not just perfect but its ending minute or so musical magic as in delivers chills it's so good.. No offense, wonderful to see this live take but tho still EXTREMELY cool to see doesn't quite equal that one - bit rushed certainly understandable playing live. T/y for it of course.

I made a similar comment and agree that it's too fast. Many people here enjoying the fast tempo. I feel that the fast tempo makes this group of incredible world class players sound ever so slightly loose. On their worst day they are still incredible and I love this footage but compared to other live recordings of it played at studio tempo kill this one. Appreciate any footage of these and any other highly influential musicians is always welcome.

This is what happens when you have a bass player who can't control himself.... The band loses control and it becomes a horse race. The original feel is in the rear view mirror and they never get it back.

I saw this video many years ago uploaded by a different chanel and then it disappeared. This is the best version of this song which usually has a kind of a lazy tempo, but this one is perfect. I had been looking for it for a long time. Thanks! 😅

I am happy that you are so pleased. This is a pirate video I bought in the mid-1990s and converted to DVD more than a decade ago. And I converted it to mp4. I am sure there is a video somewhere with better audio and picture than this one. Thank you for watching.

In Spring of 79, I was in Madison, Wisconsin out from LA working on a tv movie. One Saturday night after I finished work I left my hotel and wandered into a small tavern looking for a beer. I noticed a sign by a door in the back: "Live Music Tonight $5". I asked who was playing and was told "Some guys from Milwaukee- they sounded pretty good in the sound check”. So I took a chance and went in. This was the same lineup that is in this video, Pat, Lyle Mays, Danny Gottlieb and Mark Egan and they had just released the first Pat Metheny Group (the white) album. Some of you might remember the 70s Maxell tape ad with the hipster sitting in front of speakers with his hair and tie getting blown backwards? I felt like that guy, about 20 feet from the stage as they absolutely ripped through the whole album. That night turned me into a lifelong Pat Metheny fan but this is still my favorite incarnation of the group. Too bad we don’t get to see a little more of Lyle but this is some of the best Mark Egan footage I’ve seen. Thank you so much for posting it.
