We have the 70L and 100L, work great for bike tours and car travel / camping. I like the larger sizes but wouldn't take them on trips where I needed to carry them packed out. I like the look of this 40L for one bag travel. Adding it to my wish list.

I generally love Patagonia as a brand. But for the duffle/backpack bag I've found that the Eagle Creak Cargo Duffle work a bit better with medium sized side pockets and side grab handles. The straps are slightly more comfortable also. I took it for a two week trip trough the UK with all train travel and it worked exceptionally because it fits on the smaller shelf above the seats on the train. The Osprey is also a better option, though I've never used it for a long trip.

Too bad for you, I will be using it for groceries anyway lol My last bag was cheap but had a rigid removable bottom insert that was effective, maybe I can find something similar to put in here. But mainly I do use it for travel, so I needed something strong. I wanted to look at Sea to Summit duffel but couldnt find one in a store in my area, so I compared the North Face base camp bag to this one. I loved the side pocket of the NF, but I didnt like that it didnt seem possible or at least easy to take off the backpack straps, which I dont really need for 95% of needs. The NF also had a smaller butt as it was more rounded and I didnt like that. I can imagine it being even worse for groceries and my kind of packing, especially if I can find something to put at the bottom for rigidity. I guess that was the 2 things. But really, it was hard to find a bag that fit everything perfect, so no regrets.

I own this bag in the previous 45l Version, also in navy. It actually has a bright orange liner similar to the outside Patagonia logo. I use it as a gym bag mainly, and also for groceries tbh :D. Also really nice for Car Travel/Camping. It obviously isn't a good backpack though. So for a Onebag SEA-Trip I would definitely recommend an Osprey Farpoint kind of bag over this...

Just got mine 55L delivered 2 days ago....I was doubting between balck and this one. Happy I got this bleu one....matches well with black but looks just a bit more classy than black I think. I use it for gym/brazillian jiujitsu gear. Didnt find the 40 litre bag online though.

I quite like Patagonia bags and have several. They’re well designed, very durable and I like the look. Really annoys me that Patagonia never use lockable zips though - it’s a big negative for me.
@leonardmilcin7798
2 жыл бұрын
Lockable zips are overrated. They have not made a lock that would prevent anybody getting into your bag in couple of seconds. The only thing locks on a bag achieve is put a huge target on it saying "MY OWNER THINKS THERE IS SOMETHING VALUABLE IN HERE".
@albedo0point39

@@leonardmilcin7798 I just zip tie bags anyway. It’s just about dissuading a thief from rooting around your bag… or someone tampering with it (worst case - putting drugs or something in it). End of the day, a thief could take a knife to a soft sided bag if they wanted.

Quite tricky to pack a backpack for such a journey and pick the proper equipment 😉. Cheers

I really found it difficult and heavy as handle mode if it is full, even just walking short distance (I am 5'11' 190 lb male). I bought it to use as a two-bags travel mode with my other backpack, and I realized that without shoulder strap it is useless for me. I am looking for the similar size duffel with shoulder straps now 😹

What are your thoughts on this for car camping? I've got a 2P tent, sleeping bag, pad, and other odds and ends, but I haven't really figured out a way to easily transport this gear from car to site. Would it stand up to light abuse in the outdoors? How about cleaning it if it gets a little funky?

Hey Billy! The TPU coating makes cleaning a little easier and we haven’t noticed any durability issues so far. We usually get a lot of scratches on TPU and tarpaulin-like material like this, however, we haven’t run into that on the Black Hole Duffel so far. We also recommend checking out the Durability and Testing section in the full review to see our experience using this pack for different use cases. packhacker.com/travel-gear/patagonia/black-hole-duffel-bag-40l/ - Rebecca
