This looks amazing! If you wanted coloured flowers would it be better to do it with coloured sugar paste, or with white sugar paste dusted with coloured powder?
@combocutters
8 жыл бұрын
+Poppy Butler Hi Poppy, you can do both, coloured sugarpaste gives a more solid colour but dusting later can be more delicate. Try dipping the brush in a mix of dust colour and alcohol and brushing the colour on when working the icing. This gives a delicate finish and a white edge around the petals. This also looks great with royal icing and the Renshaw ready made royal icing is perfect.

Beautiful work. How hard does the sugar paste set? Is it possible to colour it metallic using ggold lustre dust and alcohol, or is it too soft?
@combocutters
8 жыл бұрын
The sugarpaste will dry back to the same consistency as it was before the water was added. As with any icing it is only the moisture evaporating that dries it out. When it is dry you can paint it with a mix of alcohol and lustre dust. I use food grade isopropyl alcohol instead of normal alcohol as it dries so quickly. It must be Food Grade and state this on the bottle. If you are unable to use alcohol then try pure lemon extract as this also dries very quickly and is available from most health food shops.

Hi there, I tried various gumpastes, fondants and sugarpastes and did exactly what you said. Unfortunately, not one of them worked (they all came out stringy, stretchy and gluggy). What sugarpaste brand or recipe are you using please?
@combocutters
6 жыл бұрын
Hi, I use the original Renshaw ready to roll sugarpaste. They have also brought a range out that is too stretchy and other brands are also too stretchy. If you can't find one without the stretch then revert back to royal icing and brush in exactly the same way.

Your cake look fabulous! I really want to give a try this type of decoration. Unfortunately I am new with all this brushes busines ( not cakes busines ;) ). Could you please advice what to buy- which brands of brushes you are using (dusting and no 6 is that all i need to know?) and if they have any specific names or something. Sorry to trouble you and I really hope you could advise me something in this matter. Thanks in advance
@combocutters
10 жыл бұрын
Hi Aquavita, you can use any numbered brush depending on the effect you are aiming for. A very fine brush such as a number (1) will give very fine detail, a number (3) will still be delicate but a number (6) will be bold with a deeper detail. Always remember long sweeping strokes and you won't go wrong ;)

+Colleen McCullough I haven't tried this Colleen but if I were I would thicken my chocolate with a few drops of water ( see our Easter PDF tutorial on our website www.patchworkcutters.com) and pipe and brush the same as for royal icing or sugarpaste. The brush will need to be rubbed with a little vegetable shortening to prevent the chocolate from sticking. It can then be wiped clean and not rinsed in water. I need to have a play with this one :0)

@combocutters

For the sugarpaste I would leave the icing to dry for two to three hours before dusting. If you use royal icing then one hour would be sufficient time. It really depends on how warm the atmosphere is.

Hi Martin, yes you can use royal icing, in fact it was royal icing that I originally used many years ago.You can create finer work with it and use a number two piping nozzle and a number 1 paintbrush, but sugarpaste and a larger brush is quicker :)

HELP HELP HELP PLEASE!!! My gumpaste gets so sticky & when I add more water to it, it only gets watery but not smooth at all. So when I put it into a piping bag, it nearly comes out of it. What do I do wrong? Should I sweep more or less? I really like to try this tutorial out but I just can't seem to get the gumpaste as smooth as yours.
@combocutters
10 жыл бұрын
Hi Elena, Sorry for not getting back sooner, are you using fondant icing? fondant roll out icing is the same as sugarpaste but every brand can have a different feel. Some are more pliable than others and if yours feels stretchy before you begin to add water then you may need to use a different brand. I use Renshaws ready to roll icing or Squires Kitchen range of sugarpastes. I agree with Jarrad if you are still having a problem with your softened sugarpaste icing then use the traditional way with royal icing. The technique is the same but if you feel the royal icing dries a little too quickly then add 1 teaspoon of piping gel to 4 tablespoons of royal icing this will slow down the drying time.

PatchworkCutters thank you so much for replaying! I'm from Belgium, and to be honest we dont have that much choice over here. I bought sugarpaste wich was the only kind in the store and the seller told me that it's same as rolled fondant? I'm gonna look further, maybe for an online shop or so. And yes, I've already thought about royal icing myself, thanks for the advice! I really like your videos, & I'm still hoping to try this one out one day :)))

I am disappointed she has not been able to answer you because I have the same question. Am also wondering if this can be done with other types of icing, buttercream in particular. As people will be able to tell, I know little to nothing about decorating, but am fascinated by it nonetheless.
@Nikadawn
7 жыл бұрын
carlos olguin before she thinned the sugar paste, the paste was just the same as gum paste. After she thinned it down and used it to pipe with it became royal icing. gum paste dries rock hard when left in its solid state. the royal icing will also dry hard but it is a lot more brittle because it was thinned down. you could also make royal icing with just powdered sugar and egg whites until you get your desired consistency
@Nikadawn
7 жыл бұрын
Gay Lyall you can try to use buttercream but it won't work well because it won't dry out like the royal icing will. instead it would melt and all your hard work will be wasted. royal icing is really east to make, just powdered sugar and egg whites mixed together until desire consistency. more whites will make it thinner, more powdered sugar will thicken it
