Do you hear that jangling? It's the sound of my hooks... Andrei, oh Andrei, I know of you this; you act a tough soul, but you are really just scared for your brother. A brutal world would easily crush a poet, without a nutshell like you to embrace him. This aggression that - late at night - you find yourself ashamed of, is only natural. It's only natural, to rather be loved than feared, but still wish to strike fear into the hearts of those who would harm your loved ones. As for Peter, I might be able to help mend the broken heart. Let me talk to Maria; you two don't need to wallow in this purgatory. The way to the place that is better than real, is found by the humble connection between eachother; not inside empty towers or at the bottom of a bottle.

I don't know if I would quite go that far, it's missing the puzzle element for it to be that, but Pathologic, and The Void as well, take quite a lot from adventure games. Whenever IPL describe their own games, "adventure" is one of the first things they tend to say.

This track sounds like a sick stomach, at least in the background. The growling, very ill sound of it, the weird syncope like it’s at least _trying_ to keep digesting but it’s failing, just the sound of impending doom. Idk maybe it because I learned of this game while I had stomach flu, but damn. A sick stomach background fits doesn’t it?

This game gives off such a distinct vibe of Russian pre-Bolshevik revolution bohemians. The country was in turmoil, so the art became more and more decadent and surrreal. Just like the game itself. I actually heard from one of the ingame characters about the events of the February revolution (Russia had two of them, the February and October by Bolsheviks). So basically the world of Pathologic is just an alternative Russia.

The Steppe's a big region. The impression I got was that so many of the basic elements of storytelling are disputed facts in this narrative, even the "where" was hazy. _Neverminded the "when"!_ Is the town part of the USSR? Ask Saburov, Block, or Dankovsky, and they'll probably say yes. Ask Aspity, Burakh, or a worm, and they'll probably say no. As we're learning into the modern day, just because Russia says part of the world has been assimilated, doesn't mean it actually is. The leaders can draw whatever imaginary lines they want on their maps, but the earth and the people belong to no one and everyone. The native Kin and the Capital occupiers are in conflict; it's one of the many ways the town is special but not uncommon. Paradoxically, national identities are forged out of this conflict. Battles we refuse to ever admit we lost, a "them", that we define ourselves against, but wishing doesn't make the living bodies go away. The enemy stays, crosses thresholds, and intermarries, and if we have love in our hearts, the only option is to accept that this is the way the world is now.

@@heathercalun4919 beatifully said. I agree that Pathologic has this feel of... timelessness. It's like the Tsarist province Russia, USSR and 90s (because there are people wearing jeans) at the same time. This hauntological state of existence is really Russian, however. If you go deep into this country (and visit its "deep" provinces) you really wouldn't be able to say what time it is. "One can't simply cognize Russia" as one russian poet said (sorry for a rought translation). No wonder russian school of thought is so chtonic and metaphysical - Russia is just a dark place lost in time and they could feel it even before the Revolution.

@@heathercalun4919 well, American Russia (russia in the american media) is the most surrealistically un-russian thing ever, I can tell you that as a Russian. It's basically a nearly uncanny valley level of mismatching. Well I dont know why when I read or watched american books or movies they always stroke me as something superficial, almost deliberately ignoring the core of russian atmosphere. So probably it was a wise decision to write about Clara in american setting :) Btw, I am writing a story set in a world which is a mix between Dishonored and Pathologic games with strong Lovecraft influence :)
@heathercalun4919

@@crestfallenknight7983 I have been more into cosmic horror lately so I'd like to read that. It's actually a "Better Call Saul" fanfic, the thing I'm writing, but since the story delves more into themes of the supernatural than the show does, I thought Clara would add an interesting perspective on magic and "the law". Reality as defined by corrupt institutions, versus the unpleasant realities that nevertheless must be confronted and accepted. A lot of American media only recognizes Russian culture as foreign and dangerous, which probably explains the artificiality. But I prefer the explanation Artemy gives; in a sense, there is nothing special about the town. The story of Pathologic is a story that could be told anywhere.
