Patient Support Groups:
Patient Support Group (PSG) is an innovative community-based intervention which is currently being implemented in Tamil Nadu for strengthening communitization efforts for better Non Communicable Diseases (NCD) control including compliance to treatment for common NCDs especially Hypertension and Diabetes. The group can address a lot of issue faced by them in the management of the NCDs and mutually benefit each other through sharing of experiences.
The Women Health Volunteer from the SHG network who forms the first point of contact for the community in the household level screening for NCDs play a crucial role in the PSGs due to their closeness and association with the community.
- Patient support Group is the platform where patients with the same Non Communicable Diseases along with their families could get together and discuss the disease and its treatment, life style modifications adopted by them etc.
- The individual strengths of the members are pulled together to provide support and strength to everyone instead of each individual struggling to cope up on their own with their problems.
- The group also serves as a platform for the members to share their best practices in achieving disease control which will inspire the group members to get motivated for proper treatment’.
- Through the patient support groups, the members mutually receive and provide social support for each other as a group.
