Over the last few years I’ve heard thousands of creators’ stories. Most of the stories used to be about getting screwed by a broken system -- but over the last year or two, it's really changed. Now, I'm hearing more and more stories about thriving creative businesses. Creators' operations have evolved from kitchen table recordings to high-end studios. From coffee houses to large concert halls. From flying solo to employing teams and scaling their creativity. There’s a lot that’s uncertain right now, but one think I’m highly confident about is that the future is BRIGHT for creativity. Creators are KILLING IT! Such an exciting time to be alive for creative people.

It is an interesting time for creators but like new productivity apps seams like is only working for people already productive, I been working my ass for a few years already without making a dollar online, and yes probably I'm not smart enough about my approach overall, but that's my point you should be focus too in this millions of people like me that are putting a lot of good work but still not making any, and thanks for all you do is really something amazing

We use Patreon to fund our projects for several years now. And we LOVE it! With your platform and the financial support of the patrons, it was already possible to shoot multiple road trip documentaries and invest heavily in our production gear like new cameras and editing hardware. For us, it is the best way at the moment to fund the creative work. It's great to see that Patreon is thriving!

Right now I earn maybe a smidge over minimum wage on Patreon… for working FULL TIME on only the stuff that matters to ME. I'm pretty prolific… because it's MY stuff and what has always driven me, it's what I would do anytime I didn't have to do anything else. I have the freedom to drop everything and do things like drive to PA to see my Dad before he passed away (I shared this story with Jack: remember me, Jack?) and it's a more stable, predictable income than freelancing or even many day jobs. Patreon simply works. And it works at all scales: people's lives can be transformed by fifty extra dependable bucks a month, not even five hundred or two thousand.. When I do hit two thousand I'll be putting other tools in patrons' hands, but I don't have to scale like that in order to survive. It's already enough.

Amazing! congratulations Jack. You've made a few mistakes along the way but owned up to those. your honesty is what got you and the company through. I hope that financing round does not have too much of a hidden agenda. looking forward to local currency and payment methods to get rid of the antiquated credit card systems that no one here in Europe wants to use. Also, for the love of god, don't create an highly algorithmic recommendation system. creators don't need one more algorithm to please. make it simple keywords or category based, but NOTHING MORE! Lastly, please never harvest data from your customers, both creators and patrons. YOU ROCK

So proud of and happy for Patreon!! What an amazing story. Now the only thing left to worry / wonder about for the company’s future is how to retain the creative spark and especially the art-focused idealism and sense of purpose over the long term. Because at some point, when the dollar amounts become so significant, how can that not lead to unintended / unanticipated consequences? So long as Jack is there, the future seems secure and creators safe. But what if (heaven forbid) he gets hit by a bus? Or suddenly turns 98 and no longer has the energy, idealism and dynamism of a sixteen year old saint who’s high on life and also as pure and true as Joan of Arc? (Seriously, the man is a saint, in the process of creating a legacy that few people ever dream of.) My guess however is that he’s ahead of the curve on this front too, working on new ideas to prevent the dangers that come from so much; i.e. that absolute power corrupts absolutely. Those questions are for another day. Today is about the amazing success of a truly astonishing and transformative vision for artists and creative genius on our planet. Congratulations Patreon. Wow. BTW, is there a Nobel prize for being the most amazing patron in the history of the world for artists? Because I nominate JC. Oh, wait. Not that JC, I meant Jack Conte.

You know what else would be good... a TikTok/Stories/Reels type thing with hashtags you can follow. The thing with Patreon is if you’re only supporting one or a few artists, you only check it a few times a month. It feels lonely and not interactive. And you can’t gain new patrons from Patreon, it’s always cross promotion. On the flip side as a creator who supports no one, you’re only on it to create. The reason the social giants do so well is because there’s a variety of content, it’s interesting every day, it’s free, and new people pop up everywhere thanks to hashtags, algorithms, and things you follow. The program collects data so they know what you like and push things out to you. If you can cater to the people who wanna just see content for free, you’ll actually get more people on it, and more buyers in the long run, and it will be hugely interactive, with stories and notifications keeping you involved. What it looks like for creators is that they might put out snippets of their work for a stories or free wall feature, with hashtags to what other people follow. It would be a huge incentive for creators to get more patrons by using a free stories/status update type content to all the people who aren’t their patrons but like the same things and follow the same hashtags and like similar things. The problem with Patreon is you have to search yourself. With youtube, shit that’s similar to what you like just pops up! And it’s for everyone to see! Why not create a 10 year plan to make it more like the social giants, more user friendly, more engaging, more free stuff... I’m totally keen to share ideas so feel free to hit me up anytime. @cammineo

A big reason there are starving artists is because they lack the skills or resources to grow or manage their audience. Discoverability on the platform is a nice step but I think there’s a ton more work to be done if Patreon is serious about this goal.
@merlin5603
4 жыл бұрын
That may be true, but Patreon has created an opportunity for many artists that have both creative skills and business skills to actually make a living, instead of starving for several years hoping to make it big at some point enough to attract some kind of corporate deal. A lot of bakeries go under not because they have bad cookies, but because they aren't business savvy. Hell, a lot of accountants go out of business, not because they don't know how to do taxes, but because they don't know how to market their services. The point of Patreon is not to change creativity to money magically. The point is that creators have a space to succeed or fail on their own merits, and not the whim of corporate publishers that chose who wins and who loses.

Something I'd really like to see, mostly out of curiosity: Demographic statistics. I'd like to see statistics on how many creators various patrons support, their average per-month contributions, how long they stick with the creators they support, things like that. And I'd like to see it (in raw numbers and percentages) broken down by various groups -- nationality, age, sex/gender, etc. Unfortunately, I'm guessing you don't have much of the age/sex/gender data, since I don't think I was asked to provide any of that as a patron… but it would be really interesting to see if you have or could get any of that information. It could also help you figure out where any gaps exist, so you could find ways of reaching out more to those people.

But in Canada I'm supposed to be charging only other Canadians sales tax and my patreon is charging people from other countries. I'm also not required to charge it for digital goods. I don't think charging sales tax on behalf of creators from other countries is a good idea and you should let them set the sales tax themselves maybe.
