honestly don't hate on patrick for doing a solo career while fall out boy was on hiatus. this was something that he never got the chance to do with fall out boy. and it's an entirely different record, so it was difficult to put out without getting hate, and i am so so proud of him for doing it. he has so much talent, he literally played and produced everything himself, this whole album was 100% patrick stump. i will always love and be proud of patrick for making this and the transition and standing up to hate for changing and if you talk bad about soul punk, patrick may put the "i" in lie but i put the "i" in i will punch you bye

I love the way Patrick sings like how he fidgets a bit, like he wants to let out all of his love or anger or music and talent. I honestly love Patrick's solo works I hate when people say it went no where, because it obviously did. People bought the albums, people watch his videos, and if you don't think that's enough well then piss off.

IS NOBODY GONNA TALK ABOUT HOW THE LUPE FIASCO VERSION IS SO SUBTLY POLITICAL LIKE DAMN THAT WAS CLEVER lemme break it down for y'all: Patrick is singing about how he loves his city despite all its flaws. Lupe comes in and raps about neighborhood segregation and gentrification. Patrick's main focus is about how much he loves his city and not much of its problems because he, as a white person, doesn't have to deal with them. This emphasizes white privilege. He mentions the problems, but he says "Forget all the drugs and gangs, corruption..." showing how these problems don't affect him. Lupe raps about all the problems that Patrick doesn't dwell on, and then in the end, almost as an afterthought, he adds "Beside all the above, I love..." and then patrick goes "This city!!!" It really shows how white privilege makes people blind to the problems that minorities are facing. Also, many people say the rap part doesn't really work with the rest of the song/feels out of place, but I think that was deliberate. Hip hop is considered an "urban" genre - black communities first started using the genre as a way to express their emotions through music. The stark contrast between Lupe's rap segment and Patrick's pop-ish sounding parts further highlights the racial disparity without explicitly mentioning it. Also, Lupe Fiasco doesn't get much time in the song, which I think also highlights that African American communities don't get heard enough... (also Lupe Fiasco is a Muslim so this can go multiple ways as well!!) honestly there is sooooo much more i can say about this song and i can go on and on and on about the depth behind the choice of lyrics and the types of genre used and just. HHHHHHHHHHHH i love it i love it i LOVE IT

@daft_mervy
3 жыл бұрын
i think you're mostly right, except maybe not some parts of this aren't exactly 'white privilege' so much as economic or moral choices that make people good or bad. i do agree that there are several aspects of the song talking about skin color, but i see it as more of a 'there's these good things and these bad things about these people and this city and this world, and we have to focus on both to have make the world better, because being only optimistic or only pessimistic will overbalance you.' please keep in mind this is only my view of the song and I'm not trying to argue with you, rather, add to what you said at a slightly different pov.

Reading through some of these comments, here and ITunes, I'm kinda shocked. Everyone was like "Funk wannabe", "Terrible and too mainstream", "Terrible voice and vocals". I will say that this is your opinion ,and now I can give my opinion. I personally LOVED this song. He let loose his lyrics and writing style not for people to like it, but for himself. Sometimes you just have to be you, and sometimes you get hate for it. I found this inspirational. Breaking away from your popular group to do your own thing, not caring what others thought. (But I am also a huge fan of Fall Out Boy)

It makes me so sad how underrated and under appreciated Patrick's Soul Punk album is!! Patrick is so freaking talented and is a little angel and this song and album is so incredible, it sure as hell deserved more attention than it got. Like, Patrick did pretty much all of it himself and hardly anyone seemed to care and it makes me so depressed on how Patrick didn't get enough praise for it. As much as I am a HUGE fan of FoB, I still think Soul Punk should have gotten more attention. I LOVE YOU PATRICK!!

This song is actually great. Like I'm sorry guys, but just because up its nothing like FOB's stuff, doesn't mean it's bad. There's a reason this is called a 'solo project'. If this is Patrick's style aside from Fall about Boy then that's fucking awesome. Opinions are great but let's stop the hate :D

Lol Patrick is singing how much he loves the city, then the black guy just starts giving a detailed breakdown of the problem with the city.... Then goes back to say I love it XD

+ThaHappySauce i think the what the song meant was that patrick since he is white he gets more benefits than the blacks. So the blacks who has no same treatment, points out the problems with the city. Yet patrick who doesn't give a shet in the video is saying he still loves it no matter what.

I remember the first time i heard this, it was in 2011 on an AirTran flight to Atlanta, I plugged into their SiriusXM they had in the seat's armrest and I thought, "This is Patrick from FOB? This song is amazing!" It's been one of my favorites ever since.

I love Patrick for everything he does, for playing in FOB, doing a solo career or whatever he likes to do with music. He does music because he loves doing that, and WE as his fans should respect that. So, those who consider themselves his real fans, stop hating on him or telling him he looked better this or that way or he should just be singing for FOB. If people tell him that I don´t think they really are his fans and if you don´t like his music you should just not be here commenting how he would be better off with his band than himself. He is a great person (Ok, I don´t know him personally but I believe every person has some great personal aspects, as does Patrick) and an excellent musician. For those who hate on him: You never gonna take his music- soul away. ;) For those who are still here and love him as much as I do, I love you guys as well :* Well, cheers guys, and enjoy his music! Ps: Sorry, if I have any grammatical errors or such, I´m no native ;) Pss: I love you and your music, Patrick!
