I remember Diana on The Oprah Show when she was asked to sing while sitting on the couch " It's my Turn" in acapella. When she got to the part "cause the rain aint gonna hurt me", she choked up and couldn't continue. Her tears began to flow and that's when a realised that those words certainly meant something very special, personal and heartbreaking to her.

I'm sorry that you believe people expressing honest opinions and preferences for a singers work is an attack on them---it is not. People have the right to express their views without being made into villains by you. Its not that deep. Singing is emotion, communication, style & tone count for a lot. Its not just about holding long notes, and being loud. Patti is a brilliant singer as is Diana. Patti shines on You are My Friend etc something nobody else could do justice. But this isn't her style. Patti has an insane vocal ability. You can't help but marvel at her power and range. That said, her version of My Turn robs the song of every ounce of vulnerability. In Diana's hands, the song feels like it is being sung by someone who has never had the courage to step out on their own, but is determined to do so, and wants others to understand her need to step out. It's as if she doesn't want to hurt the person she is leaving because she still loves them, but she has to go and she wants to explain why. In Patti's version, this woman is defiant. She seems to not care at all what the person she is leaving thinks. She's had enough of having her life controlled. It's as if she has had the power all along and just got tired of not exercising it. With Diana, you get the sense that she is just discovering her strength and is taking a risk. Both versions have merit. I'm not choosing one as better than the other, just saying that Patti interprets the lyrics from a different perspective. As forceful behind the scenes as Diana is reported to be, her belief in herself seemed to evolve from the 60s to the late 70s until she finally felt comfortable leaving the protection of Motown. So, her version feels reflective of her life experience. With Patti, I get the sense she was always confident in her abilities. She never had to learn to be believe in herself. So, her rendition is basically about blowing past external obstacle more than internal ones. This is why we need all types of artists. Even when Diana sings songs of strength (Ain't No Mountain, I Ain't Been Licked), there's a hard fought sense of power she is had to develop. That's something I can connect to, as I suspect many people can. For those who are more naturally empowered, we need versions like Patti's.

This performance was DEEP, if you know Patti/Diana history... I know Patti got a kick out of doing this performance, she even wore a gold dress (a bit of shade or tongue in cheek humor on her part). Diana tried to wear Patti out back in the day when they were competing and now after all these years Diana's career is washed up and Patti is STILL sounding better than ever, still working more than ever, blossoming as an entrepreneur and it's Her Turn to upstage Diana, singing Diana's music in tribute yet better than her, flaunting that powerful still radiant voice!

Again that beef talk, the whole story from Supremes and Bluebelles is more than ancient and most of the problems between them, than Patti has complained too many times for my taste, had to do with executive management. The other things heard she saying in interviews like them buying the dresses Patti's group wanted and such dont seem so nice. Still, you cant blame no one for lack of success, might not feel right but that's not pretty. This performance shows her putting all that energy and making the music her own, full of power wich i might prefer. But Ross has the standard voice, carrying the foundation of the Supreme's group of elegance and ladylike. You're typical soprano voice.. And get yourself together, Diana Ross never stops touring, she's still is called for things like Nobel Prize, her super bowl halftime show was one most memorable and that event has record set as one most watched tv program.

I love and respect both ladies. I can understand how my statements may have been taken so offensively by average spectators, but I'm speaking from a different perspective... Diana Ross has always had more shine and crossover appeal, but it was more than just executive management, it was an industry, a moment in time, a society, a lust for fame, fortune and power. Is the perceived difference of their standing in society/notoriety/wealth fair? No, it's simply the game of life and Diana has played it superbly and that was reason that Ms. Ross has upstaged every other member of the Supremes and ended up spending a good deal of time drunk, laying in bed depressed and crying. Both ladies are intelligent, driven, consummate artist, equally talented, legendary, magnificent in their own rite and adored around the world. I guarantee Ms. Ross would give a million dollars to experience what it is like to blow with such power, range and control and Ms. LaBelle would do the same to experience greater notoriety and reward for being just as great and I'm sure Ms. LaBelle's bank account would faire well with decades of child support payments and a settlement from a former billionaire husband, but it is what it is, a level of human experience that THEY have in common. I can imagine that as they have both competed, ventured through different paths in life, matured and grown in respect for one another, they've learned that the fame, fortune doesn't really mean much to the soul anyway... but for Patti the desire for achievement is a drive to keep pushing hard. Yes, Diana is more settled and focused more than ever on her family, but Patti has lost so much of her's and now with resources in tact is blossoming as an entrepreneur, striving to accomplish what she should have had an equal opportunity to accomplish all along. With that being said... you all can have a STADIUM of seats!

See, these are real singers. Diana the reigning Supreme don’t need an earpiece to get on key, she stay ready. Patti, the godmother of of R&B is trained to go, on any stage at anytime without sound checks. So many other legends. Please bring back the old sound, even if its introduced in a new style 😂😂 wishful thinking 💭

This is how you know music can touch you for real. I'm about to embark on a major move and I think subconsciously I've been singing this for that reason. After listening once I remember being a teenager hearing this like THAT'S RIGHT!!! I'm outta this mutha fucka! LMAO

Right on. Which is why I didn't like Patti until the last couple of minutes. Diana songs are just that Diana songs. they are to be sung with a certain phrasing and smooth style of singing and when it comes to Patti I feel the same way. Patti songs are Patti's I hate every version of "if only you knew" in which has covered because I love the way Patti adds her inflections and phrasing. Only she can do that song justice...back to the point these two Queens of pop and soul are two totally different singers and after 60 years in the business they both still rock
