The emotion she gives here. Singing this song in the same town Glenn was performing the role at that time. The ghost flapper dress adds to the moment.

Wait - she sang this in Los Angeles as Glenn was staring (and basically auditioning for Broadway) down the road? Wow. I don't know how it was till today that I learned this (especially since I listened to your whole podcast) but must have missed it. Can you imagine how even more insane the whole drama of the World Premiere - Los Angeles Premiere - Broadway Premiere would've been had the world been as connected then as now in terms of internet/social media? Freaking insane

Glenn may be a great actress but Patti could SING this role. Gloriously. No one can touch her vocally.

Great performance. Her voice is so powerful and ‘rangy’. I saw her in Sunset in early 1994 and was blown away by the power in her voice back then.

Patti is a fighter. And her talent is unparalleled. I moved to NYC as soon as I could when I was 20 and saw every New York performance from Noises Off through Patti and Mandy. I knew New York was "home" my second day in the city when I went to Tower Records and they had a huge marketing display for Matters of the Heart front and center. Patti live is the only performer who makes your heart physically vibrate when she lands a song and you can't take your eyes off of her when she is on stage. I was horrendously bullied as a kid and sought refuge and solace in all of Pattis cast albums. Shes always been there for me. Thank you again Joanne for this archive. It is a service to many.

I'm so jealous that you've seen her live so many times. She is such an amazing performer and it's really something to experience that talent live and in person. Oh my goodness, Tower Records! I haven't heard that in a VERY long time. That brings back memories! :-)

My heart always breaks for the many performers who lost such good friends and colleagues to that dreaded disease...and to come out and give that emotional speech and then perform this given what she had just been through-wow. Love that orchestra and this just might be my favorite performance of this song by her-just wow! Thank you so much for posting!

Yes, This is one of my favorite of her performances, as well. I don't know how she managed to do it. And AIDS... What a horrible disease. No one would wish that on their worst enemy. What a terrible shame.

It is so sad! Yeah, it's a great podcast - definitely give it a listen when you can. Omg, I think I was more embarrassing than fancy. I don't know what look I was going for but it didn't work. Neither did Patti's and she has it all over my 8th grade embarrassing self.

@@JoannesVodkaStinger I'm just embarrassing anyway. I've been really scared to tell you because I didn't know how you would react, but I trust you enough to not stop talking to me. Also, my mom said you would betray me, so that was a confidence boost. I know you won't though. Anyway, I'm only in 8th grade. I'm about to turn 15 though. I hope that's okay. 😞

Oh no, don't be afraid that I would stop talking to you... That would be horrible of me or anyone to do. Your age is how many years you've been alive, that's all. It doesn't change anything. I mean, it would under some circumstances, of course, but we're just two people talking about Patti videos on KZitem. Tell your mom she doesn't have to worry about anything - she can see everything that's said right here. :-) Don't worry, Alaina, I'm not reacting in any way at all. Nothing's changed.

@@JoannesVodkaStinger I'm literally crying. OMG Joanne I love you so much. I was just worried because I've been told that I'm really mature for my age, and people irl tend to think that I'm in my 20s. Which I don't know if that's a compliment or an insult. So, it's really comforting for the things that my mom has told me didn't come to pass, like that you would never talk to me again, or you would criticize me for liking Patti. Which are already horrible things to say to someone who is scared of the way they are perceived. I knew you wouldn't do that, but I was just embarrassed. Love you Jo. Also, now expect to see some videos of me in real life, obviously they will relate to Patti, but yeah.

I love you, too! I would never not talk to you again and certainly wouldn't criticize you for liking her at a young age. I came out of the womb loving Patti because my mother already loved her. I was raised on Evita, so I'm not going to judge anyone for liking Patti. And there's no reason to be embarrassed about something with me. It's just me. :-)

How could Lloyd Webber throw away this incredible talent for a weedy pale wannabe Broadway performer? Oh course I'm referring to Glen Close!! Oh yes that's right, MONEY. At least I got to see Miss Lupone as Norma, a memory I cherish xxx
