I love her. *Patti LuPone raises arms in a "V" *audience screams and cries.

This is the only time I've ever imagined saying this, but...Patti, you don't need to belt everything just because you CAN. And I'll probably never say that again because she's usually perfect.

@MithraMusic This is how she usually sings it when accompanied only by a piano....she belts it more as a contrast, versus when there's a whole orchestra and she usually sings it softer like in the cast recording

@041791ms yeah she was like 25 when she played Evita, which is fantastic considering those that usually play her now are like in their 30's no longer are they 25 which shows how wonderful Patti is

@tomsmith127 Good point. Weber seems to punish his actors with ridiculous high and low notes in the same songs. Sondheim seems to hold his performers in higher regard. Patti's autobiography is a great read. Her experience with Lord Andrew is quite eventful and interesting. She got a huge settlement after he screwed her over and gave Sunset Boulevard to Glenn Close. Patti was the original in London with a contract for Broadway.

@Applescruffghostbust Actually, my feeling is that Webber was much better when he had Tim Rice's lyrics. Not sure if tom smith was referring to the lyrics or the music. Personally, I find Sondheim's music and lyrics more deeply satisfying than Webber's. Also, there are no Sondheim shows I hate, but I can't say the same about Webber. The Rice/Webber musicals are some of my favourites tho. As for Pop vs. Theatrical - gourmet food is amazing, but sometimes you just want a cheeseburger.

@tomsmith127 You guys are absolutely right. Evita is IMO the closest to a masterpiece ALW has written, but still Sondheim is on a very different level.

@Rodeo6521 What are you talking about? All singers say how incredibly difficult Sondheim's songs are to sing. LuPone has said she has never sung certain songs correctly...

Evita's score is definitely the best ever written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, in my opinion. Next would come Sunset Boulevard. I feel that if Sondheim wrote Evita, the music would be even more amazing. I love ALW's musicals though. Evita, Phantom, Sunset Boulevard, Cats (only the song Memory) and Jesus Christ Superstar. Some I like, others I don't. There isn't a single Sondheim musical I hate tho! I've done musicals by both. Both masters at musical composition.

@tomsmith127 I'm more prone to Sondheim, who is for sure a more theatrical musical writer I think Webber is brilliant for having the same score throughout a particular musical, all the has to do is change the lyrics, however Webber creates more fantastical musicals, Phantom, Cats, Evita where as Sondheim creates musicals that people can as reality yes even Sweeney Todd lol

Absolutely! It's rather ironic - he gets a bad name for not being an arrogant snob. *grins* And he would have every right to be one if he wanted. And Lloyd Webber has NO right to be one. Honestly, anyone who could even compare the shallow glitz of Cats or Phantom with the sheer complexity and emotion of Gypsy or Sweeney Todd clearly doesn't know the theatre.

@AmericaLoudNClear clearly you don't care much for Sondheim but there is a significant contingent of Theatre fans who would disagree with your opinions. Perhaps you should step back and consider that before you are so blatantly rude. You have your opinion but that doesn't give you the right to call them stupid which is basically what you have done here.
