Patti Smith is an icon, this song came out when I was in high school and there was just no fuss over it. I can't remember anything about it. I think she only sang it in live concerts. She was a leader in the Punk Movement, and I tell you those kids mostly out of England weren't afraid to say anything. There was a punk movement in the US but nothing like England. the 70's was just a crazy ass time. The stuff we did in the 70's you could never do today. I imagine what would happen if a main stream white artist or any white artist came out with that song today in 2023. OMG they'd be tar and feathered. I miss the 70's 😎

This is the first time I listen to this song (April 21st 2019) 41 years after its release, I decided to listen the whole Easter album cause I fell in love with "Because The Night" and I'm happily surprised there are two marvelous songs so different and so powerful included in the same album! I must admit when I read the title I got really curious, how come a song with the N word was too popular back in late 70s??, off course I foretold it wasn't racist cause it comes from Patti Smith, and yeah! I wasn't wrong... it's about freedom, it's about the chains humanity has around holding us back, and which a lot of us denie to accept and to take off! love the strength of that woman! long life to Patti Smith
