"May the voices inside you that fill you with dread, make the sound of thousands of angels of instead." Damn, Patty, how is it that you can write a lyric that literally catches a person in the throat to where the only release is a flood of tears for seemingly no reason. Thank you, Great Lady.

This song barely got me through my divorce, in 2002. The only thing left in the house was an incredible audio system, and a Relax the Back chair. I played this over and over again, and delivered the final lyrics about the warm soft bed in writing, on the final, legal divorce decree. I still love her, almost 20 years later. Thank you for sharing Patti.

Beautiful as the first time I heard it in Ann Arbor 1997. Isn't it funny how you always remember your first time seeing Patty? So memorable.

I'm only here because of Sutton Foster. After hearing a few of Patti Griffin's songs, I can see why Sutton really adores her :D She's amazing! You can't find songs like this these days

Makes me think of my ex wife. Seeing Patty was the last real date we had together. She played this song last. I wish her well, miss her every day. I love her but I don't...even know why.

I couldn't find again the comment from Charlotte who asked if anyone knew the chords but I found that once you learn the chords, it is easier if when you play it, you think of it as a pretty country waltz..to treat it as a waltz when you strum.

3rd chord, slide that same finger position up the neck two frets; fourth chord, keep thumb wrapped, holding down bass E string on 5th fret, while 2nd (middle) finger holds down the 3rd string (G string) on 6th fret and ring finger holds down 5th string (bass A string) on 7th fret, and baby finger holds down D string (4th string on 7th fret. That should give you a start, and if you have a good ear, you’ll get the rest of it.

..that way, I think it is easier to sing and play at the same time, as, her vocals have some beautiful trills and triplets in places, much like Irish and Gaelic musicians have, that make the song perfect, so that part will be challenging to learn, but once you learn it..have it down..it will be easier to sing it with feeling.

Well..she has her kapo on the 2nd fret. But without the kapo, Try key of B as first chord; 2nd chord, pointer finger on 3rd string of 2nd fret, wrap your thumb around to hold down the bottom/bass E string, while your baby finger holds down the 4th string on fourth fret and your ring finger holds down fifth string (A string) on fourth fret;

Hope those chords help, charlotteecc12 .. My ex of many years got me feeling as sad as this song. I was not able to forgive him but can forgive myself for not forgiving him. My present to myself, to ease the pain, was to guy myself a brand new Martin OMCE of walnut, with beautiful inlays around the sound hole resembling Zuni inlays. That got me out of my funk, to play again, including learning this song.
