Ive owed a number of brodie free ride bikes over the years. Excellent bikes. Makes me miss working at TAYLOR CYCLE AND SPORTS in sudbury ontario.

I was in the very first class Paul brodie did along with 3 others at the time i was 15 years old and now im 18 so its been a wile but it was awsome and well worth the $2500 and at the end you can tell everyone it is a one of a kind frame i built a dirt jumper frame and brazed and tig welded it for extra strength it was the first dj frame Paul had helped build i learned a lot in those 2 weeks(it was the first ever class i wanted to go to lol )

$2500 for the two week course. Includes the tubeset and all shop supplies. No real requirements... just be keen and be willing to learn and push yourself. My class had a person that had no shop/fabrication experience at all and he build a very nice Fillet Brazed 29'r. Of course, the more fab skill you have the better. I made my own dropouts just for fun even though there is a huge collection to pick from.

Thanks. When I took the course, Paul had tubes left over from his business. Not sure where he purchased his tubes back then. Now, Paul typically orders from Nova Cycles. Most of the material supply in the course comes from Nova or Paragon.

Paul Brodie does not teach Ti in this course. Ti is very hard to weld for a beginner... and this is a Frame building 101... there is a lot to learn in 2 weeks... learning how to weld Ti is a complete course all by itself.

one way i do that bend with out a cnc bender of course, u take a piece of wood thick enough, and u cut in half with the bend radius plus spring back, then screw some 1/4 steel plate on the back of each side and squeeze the tubes with it on a shop press, if u wish i can do the circular cut outs inside the wood, there only needed when the bend is more pronounced, good luck

4130 Chromoly (steel) doesn't get heat treated. production aluminum frames usually do. In the video the instructor wanted to prove to me that my TIG welds were strong enough and that the tube would break before my weld would... which it did.

All bike frames in this course are made from steel; 4130 Chromoly.

Yes, Brazing a frame is strong enough. Fillet Braised bikes have been around for 100+ years. In fact, custom frame builders like Tom Ritchey still make bikes that way. Brazing is easier to learn than TIG. MIG is not used for bike frame...at least I wouldn't ride one if it was! lol TIG or Braizing is just a process of fastening the tube set together, both work very well.

Yes, there is a handout and you can just ask Paul as well. He is a wealth of knowledge! I think a few people have set out to start their own bike building business. Most people do this course because they are avid cyclist, to gain better knowledge on bike design and frame building or to build a bike of their dreams. The bike I designed/wanted was not commercially available so thats what lured me to take the course.... not to mention I've owned a few Brodie's in the past.

You are probably looking at an aluminum frame/welds. They usually look "beefier". Welding 4130 chromoly (steel) the weld bead is at least 1/2 the size. Thats just the nature of welding the different metals.

Have a look at the link to the University provided on the video. The course is $2500 which includes your tube set. If you are new to welding and building things, yes, there is a lot to learn but I do believe everyone has been able to get a bike made. You basically have 10 days to get it done. 2-3 of those days is practicing welding, mitring and designing your bike.

Hi do u have to drill holes in the tube pipes u weld together when u are building a bike frame
@MikeFreda
4 ай бұрын
I'm not sure what you are really asking.... but yes, you typically have to drill some vent holes on tunes that will be sealed off. When you weld/close off a tube you need to let the hot gas escape somewhere or else it will typically blow out the last bead of a weld. I hope that answers your question? Cheers

I am sure Tom Richey makes great bikes and the braising is strong enough for bikes, but mig, pulse spray is comparable to tig in strength, many off road race trucks, race cars weld there cages together this way,if anyone braised there cages together they would not be allowed to race because it would fall apart with the huge stresses racing puts on it... yes I weld, braising has little strength in comparison, don't take my word for it, I am surprised they aren't known for coming apart.

I have heard mixed reviews on joint strength between TIG and Brazed. It would seem to me that a Brazed joint would be weaker, but yet people have told me they flex more which gives it resistance to cracking. In opinion on this?
@adsabine1

Is braising the frame strong enough? tig or mig would be better, way better, or are the students just learning how to braise?
@wonderboysc1

typically tig welds are used for steel frames. This video also showcases some nice fillet brazed joints. Brass is commonly used as the material for fillet brazing.

How was the bend in the top tube achieved? That's a pretty big radius. Did the school have a form?
makes sense I havent owned a full chromoly frame in some time, but looking at my bars and cranks and other chromoly parts the welds ae much smaller.
