Hindsight is cruel. He was an absolute genius of a player, but he definitely had issues that he needed support with. Mental health was more taboo back then. When it comes to English football, Gazza was the nineties.

Did you notice his 'tick'. One of the documentaries on him, they had a psychologist on to watch footage of Gazza and pointed it out. They said with his childhood trauma of seeing his friend run over by a car and his obvious tourettes syndrome, it was a miracle he managed to play football at such a high level. The doc said Gazzas mind was most likely racing around at 100mph 24 hours a day. Which explains his insomnia. I felt truly sad for the man when hearing all that.

That was part of his game as well , you only have to remember the nasty tackle he did , that was assault , it was only the fact he came off worse that we forget how nasty the tackle was

Paul in all honour of course, but Gary was my hero - and I'm not even a Briton. He stood for extreme skill, lightning speed, never let the fans down in the park and no nerves at all to talk about. You just gave him the ball at the 9m spot and he'd bury it.

I was a this match at a 17yr old with notts county and the atmosphere was brilliant, seeing Gazza in his pomp etc etc. More atmosphere in that game than you'll ever get these days. Sad

He's a hero of mine but don't get it twisted, he was an adult able to look after himself, he chose not to - there was plenty of support and love offered even Gary has said that publicly, but if he doesn't take it then nobody but himself can help

Rubbish... Venables took care of him (as did some of the lads at Spurs). What followed his injury in 91 and the move away from Spurs is where things went bad for him.
