Performed this for my senior recital 56 years ago. Great to hear this after so many years. My how my ears have changed. The accompanist is really the star.

That's not an accompanist. It is the pianist of a chamber piece.

Well, I agree, but disagree. In best practice, the pianist and the [other instrumentalist] are EQUAL stars. That is the essence of a Sonata. In this recording, we find the balance that is often lacking, either via one performer's lack of skill/ear/comprehension, or the mixing engineer's ingnorance.

The opening of the Trauermusik movement always reminds me of Jerry Goldsmith's score to the Planet of the Apes movie... Brilliant composition, as per usual, by Hindemith - and by Goldsmith.

I memorized the Sonate by Hindemith because I fogged my glasses so badly when I performed that memorization was my only option.

I love it!!! Hindemith is one of a handful of my absolute favorite composers. Memoriztion of works is always best for brilliant performance, so fogged glasses were a blessing!!!!

Addendum:. When I auditioned at Yale for the DMA, I paid $500.00 in advance to the pianist. They didn't show up.I played the entire DMA Audition Recital " A CAPELLA", & Memorized! Michael McClary, Professor of Trumpet, ret.
