I'm and Old bugga and as far as cutting edge from today, I couldn't really say, other than maybe Matt Corby and Guy Sebastian maybe, whom are amazing vocalists, but in regard to your week of Aussie music, you pair of Poms have opened the biggest can of worms for yourselves now. You've only just scratched the top of the Aussie music scene from way back when. There are so many Aussie artists that were, and are, bloody brilliant from the 60's, 70's and especially the 80's that you'll be able to delve into for the next 6 months or more and still not get through everything. We got most of the music that was produced from over there in the UK and the from the States, here in Aus, but our scene was second to none as far as we were concerned, and you'll soon see why. My six tracks, only cause you asked for 5, which is pretty bloody hard to do because I could give you 500 are: Holy Grail - Hunters and Collectors (May Favourite Band of all with a lot of great songs) (Sounds of Then) This is Australia - Gangajang Great Southern Land - Icehouse Under the Milky Way - The Church What's my Scene - Hoodoo Gurus Solid Rock - Goanna Fellas, I hope your realise that this is just the start in that there's so many more , but to be honest, you won't regret it as you will have one hell of a massive new play list. Enjoy

On a crowded beach in a distant time At the height of summer, see a boy of five At the water's edge, so nimble and free Jumping over the ripples, looking way out to sea Now a man comes up from amongst the throng Takes the young boy's hand and his hand is strong And the child feels safe, yeah, the child feels brave As he's carried in those arms up and over the waves [Chorus] Deeper water Deeper water Deeper water Is calling him on [Verse 2] Let's move forward now and the child's seventeen With a girl in the back seat, tugging at his jeans And she knows what she wants, she guides with her hand As a voice cries inside him, "I'm a man, I'm a man!" [Chorus] Deeper water Deeper water Deeper water Is calling him on [Verse 3] Now the man meets a woman unlike all the rest Well, he doesn't know it yet, but he's out of his depth And he thinks he can run, it's a matter of pride But he keeps coming back like a cork on the tide [Break] Deeper water Deeper water [Verse 4] Well, the years hurry by and the woman loves the man Then one night in the dark she grabs hold of his hand Says, "There, can you feel it kicking inside?" And the man gets a shiver right up and down his spine [Chorus] Deeper water (Deeper water) Deeper water (Deeper water) Deeper water (Deeper water) Is calling him on [Verse 5] Yeah, the clock moves around and the child is a joy But death doesn't care just who it destroys Now the woman gets sick, thins down to the bone She says, "Where I'm going next, I'm going alone" [Break] Deeper water Deeper water [Verse 6] (Deeper water) On a distant beach, lonely and wild (Deeper water) At a later time, see a man and a child (Deeper water) And the man takes the child up into his arms (Deeper water) Takes her over the breakers To where the water is calm [Chorus] Deeper water (Deeper water) Deeper water (Deeper water) Deeper water (Deeper water) Deeper water (Deeper water)

Most of these shows are on YT. Check out Tim Rogers and Vika Bull singing Gimme Shelter, the Rockwiz Band with The Weight, Colleen Hewitt Superstar, Connie Mitchell What A Feeling.

The version of this with Neil Finn is my favourite. There’s a cheeky kind of undertone from Neil in the early-middle of the song with Paul’s more mature tone bookending it.

My 5: Jimmy Barnes and John Farnham “when something is wrong with my baby” (showing the yanks how soul should sound) John Farnham “help” live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (rude to call this a cover of the Beatles song, it’s an improvement) The new Qantas advert that just came out “I still call Australia home” (they’ve done a few adverts set to this song, the children’s choir from the 90’s is possibly even better) Yothu Yindi “Treaty” (a brilliant bit of Indigenous rock with a worthy meaning) Hunters and Collectors “Holy Grail” live at the AFL grand final 2013 (every Aussie sings every word when this plays in a pub)

Listen to all of the Paul Kelly. Far and away the best songwriter in Australia, at any point of his now long career. I once saw him at The Baxter Tavern here in Victoria, where he put in a 2.5hour show in the early 90's. The band took NO breaks. Paul took a one song break, and his lead guitar lead the band for the old George Jones song "White Lightnin'". That was the late great Steve Connelly, the soloist for Leaps and Bounds and so many of the Coloured Girls' best songs. Some interesting facts...To Her Door, Love Never Runs On Time, and How To Make Gravy are a trilogy it took a long time to get. About 20 years. They are apparently about the same bloke. My boss went to school with Steve Connelly, and his sister was his girlfriend for a while. My bos's, not Steve's. Our old drummer toured with Spencer P Jones, the lapsteel player on "Gravy". The drummer in this clip is a fucking legend. Peter Luscombe. You guys should look up Joe Camilleri and the Black Sorrows. Also The Rockwiz Orchestra, and look at the faces. And The Models. You'll see so many familiar faces, because they are all Australian Music Royalty.

The secret sauce for Australian rock music is the pub rock scene. That AC/DC song says it all “It’s a long way to the top”, to make it in Australia you have to be good and be even better live. Inspiration came from a blend of English and American music or whoever was prepared to come all the way down under to tour! And for some songs Australian Crawl - Beautiful People The Saints - Burn like fire would Jimmy Barnes and INXS - Goodtimes (Easybeats cover) Mental as anything - The nips are getting bigger And something obscure Supernaut- I like it both ways

So sad Aussie week is over ....Paul Kelly is the best story teller singer. Some very deep lyrics when you delve into them. My favs are Her Door or Dumb things. My recommendations for other great Aussie Artists. 1. John Farnham and Jimmy Barnes. Something is Wrong with my baby? This is a double whammy you will get 2 Aussie Legends in one.... pick a live version to get the best experience... the one from Hey hey is saturday is great. 2. Something a bit country Lee Kernaghan- Boys from the Bush or anything from Wolf Brothers 3. Guy Sebastian, Battle Scars live from home studio. 4. Matt Corby. Brother 5. Tina Arena I'm in Chains Anything fromTesky Bros. Id like to put John Farnham and Jimmy Barnes on the list twice ....but once you hear them togther you'll want to make new list just for their stuff. I have subscribed in anticipation lol

Guys, love your work! Great stuff. You ask for 5 tracks that typify Oz - Just a simple task... I couldn't even narrow it down to 5 bands let alone pick out 5 tracks. I looked at what others have suggested and agree with ALL of them. Bands/Performers I don't see mentioned yet who in my mind were popular through the 70s and 80s when Aussie music was finding its own voice - Skyhooks, Dragon, Little River Band, Sherbert, Australian Crawl, Richard Clapton, The Seekers, Models, Ted Mulry (for the slightly absurd - e.g. Get in My Car), Nick Cave (and the Bad Seeds), Gotye, Tina Arena, Savage Garden, Spiderbait, Mental as Anything, Crowded House, Silverchair, Rose Tattoo, The Black Sorrows, Jo jo Zep and the Falcons.... Tomorrow I'd come up with a totally different list. But Farnham would be at the top of any list. His live performances are legendary. His cover of Beatles' Help with the MSO is already mentioned, so I would add his breakout track "You're the Voice" from the same concert with the MSO. Maybe "Down Under" by Men at Work because you have to be Australian to understand half the lyrics!

Ok you have my sub. Thanks for the great week that I just binged, right, for my pics for your next journey into Aussie music, I might do a chronological, roughly, thing. First of all, The Seekers, I’ll Never Find Another You. (First band to have international success) Skyhooks Living in the ‘70’s Hunters and Collectors Throw you arms around me (studio version please) Men at Work Overkill (studio version please) Pete Murray Better Days I could list about a hundred others but I was trying to think of something other people may not list. But I’m confident most Aussies would say all of these are classics.

When talking about the Australian Music Industry - Johnny O'Keefe the original "Wild One" [1958] covered by Iggy Pop 1986 - got his break from Bill Haley / Lee Gordon, Then the EasyBeats [1966] Friday on my Mind covered by Garry Moore 1987 - Harry Varda & George Young then became commercially successful and writers and producers of many successful Australian rock acts, including John Paul Young (no relation), AC/DC (George Youngs younger brothers Angus & Malcolm), Flash in the Pan, Rose Tattoo, the Angels, and the solo career of fellow EasyBeat Stevie Wright. The 80' & 90's saw an explosion of Australian Artists reaching high on the charts in Australia, and abroad USA, UK. It is very notable today the number of KZitem reaction videos to Australian Artists. Country music - you still see Slim Dusty in the Australian Country Charts, to Lee Kernaghan, Keith Urban, John Williamson, Kasey Chambers, and more recently Casey Barnes, Morgan Evans. The Saints (RIP Chris Baily 2022) was our introduction to Punk Rock -- the aussie way.

I just can't think of a Bob Dylan for USA.. Paul Kelly is Soo good, so many great songs, To Her Door, How to Make Gravy, Leaps and Bounds..the list goes on! Great list Chris, well done! From what you were saying towards the end, sadly in more recent times we are losing the uniqueness since with the interwebs we are not as isolated as we once were. The 70s and 80s were an amazing time for Aussie music. Another Aussie list..hmm: The Cat Empire - Sly The Church - Under the Milky Way TISM - Whatareya Dr.G(Gurrumul) - Wiyathul Split Enz - I See Red (0k they NZ but we will claim them!) Midnight Oil - Blue Sky Mine
