Yep. Can’t even hide the inequities anymore. It is so clear to the whole world how the US is run by rich white people who point the finger at everyone but themselves as being the “problem,” when it is, in fact, the privileged white man perpetuating the problems and excusing each other for victimizing the rest of us.

"Justice is blind" is a dumb metaphor anyways. Like when I hear that, it makes me think that the justice system is incompetent because it has no moral and/or factual compass. Which is true a lot of the time tbh. Maybe "justice is blind" is an apt metaphor after all.
@LadyDoomsinger
5 жыл бұрын
Justice isn't just blind, it's deaf and stupid as well. The only way to have a fair legal system, is by separating the judge, jury and defendant - they should never see or interact with each other; if they do not know whether the defendant is white or black, rich or poor, influential or a nobody, they'd have to judge entirely on the facts of the case, and if the defendant doesn't know his judge or jury, he can't bribe or threaten them. The lawyers should then act as the middlemen, passing the relevant information between the different parties, that way all communication between the judge, jury, defendant and prosecution would have to go through several steps (i.e. from Defendant, to defendant's lawyer, to judge and jury, to prosecution - and vice versa). Think it'll work like that? Have I overlooked some critical flaw in the system?
@tommyl.dayandtherunaways820
5 жыл бұрын
@@LadyDoomsinger I think, as with most things, it comes down to striking a balance between effectiveness and expediency. With that much communication, it risks becoming like a game of telephone. You're essentially putting your trust in each party to accurately relay the information to the next and so on. Theoretically, if everyone does their part in a timely manner, it would be a great system. The only problem is that we as humans have a tendency to botch even the best laid plans.

It was obvious that Judge Ellis put himself firmly on the defence team right from the start. I’m surprised the sentence was so long. The way Ellis constantly attacked the prosecution I expected something along the lines of an hour on the naughty step or a few weeks in the penthouse of one of Trump’s hotels complete with staff. Ellis commented that “being rich isn’t a crime.” Evidently he didn’t consider the fraudulent, dishonest, illegal & treacherous way Manafort got rich in the first place much of a crime either. If what a rich, white, Trump supporter does is just fine with another rich, white Trump supporter what’s the point of having laws and sentencing guidelines in the first place? We can only hope that Judge Jackson rectifies this debacle and has some respect for our laws - regardless of the financial status, ethnicity or political affiliations of the convicted felon.

If you couldn’t tell that there was a rich white guy being sentenced by another rich white guy then the color setting on your TV needs some serious adjustment. And if you think that if the guy being sentenced by a rich white guy was of a different ethnicity the result would be the same then you haven’t been paying attention to a seriously biased justice system. The bias that exists in our justice system is racist, pointing it out is not. And nothing has highlighted it more than this skewed judgement.

@Estella Serrano, actually with THIS sentencing he was found guilty of 8 {out of 18 counts} by a jury in VA., they were a hung jury on the remaining 10 counts & for whatever reason, OSC, chose not to prosecute those extra 10 counts. Perhaps after he entered a 'Plea Agreement" of the other charges in the D.C. Circuit, the one where he 'agreed' to be a cooperating witness...but didn't. As for Judge Ellis, remember back in August of last year, during the trial, when the judge bizarrely harassed the prosecution ad nauseum, i.e., not allowing them to use the phrase Special Council, etc.? My other query about that trial was the ONE juror who wouldn't agree to convict on the remaining 10 counts of the Indictment, as it was, in scope, almost identical to the 8 that he/she did vote to convict on. At any rate, even with this "token" sentence, he still gets both credit for time served {9 months} & will be eligible for "good time" {there is no parole system for Federal Prisons}, so just on this alone, he could be out in 3 years. I have a very dear friend who just got out of our state penitentiary, after serving a sentence of 15 YEARS, for his participation in an "Armed Robbery". The crime was neither. He & his cousin got drunk & stupid & attempted to "rob" a casino with...empty cap guns! They got no money & Rob got 15 years & his cousin got 3! They used Rob's JUVIE record of underage drinking to 'Bitch' him! {Habitual Offender}. He was only 18 years old when he went in so there goes his life! Yep, like my professor said, "If you want to learn about the law, you're in the right place. If you want to learn about Justice, go to Divinity School."

@John Edward Jones, just a tiny point of correction. Judge Ellis IS the VA Judge, Manafort goes before the DC Circuit Judge next, for sentencing. She is also the Judge who revoked his bail & 'tore' up his Plea Agreement when it was learned that he was still in contact with Team tRump...from jail... So, next Wednesday, stay tuned.

@Will Pack It's amazing, and depressing, that the GOPs have bamboozled so many voters. THEY start the wars, raise taxes on ordinary people, cut taxes for the rich, increase the deficit, underfund essential services (schools, police, firefighters, infrastructure repair), and are always involved in corruption -- yet millions of morons think they're fit to govern. smh ...

Lucky for him he stole millions of dollars and not just a few, otherwise he’d be looking at serious time in a much worse prison.
