You got two amazing artists in McCartney and Wonder, add to that the production team of Martin and Emerick, f**k, you got something beyond gold. People make fun of the 80’s sound, but it’s making a comeback in today’s pop music like The Weeknd , Dua Lipa and others. I can’t wait for you to do Press To Play.

I love McCartney and Stevie Wonder, but I feel that the schmaltz factor of "Ebony and Ivory" is cranked a little too high for my liking. I give Paul credit for creating the biggest US radio hit of '82, but this song is not something I enjoy much today. However, I still chuckle at the SNL skit with Joe Piscopo & Eddie Murphy.

ABSOLUTELY LOVE EBONY & IVORY! Some don't appreciate how versatile McCartney was, I give him MAJOR PROPS for working with some of music's ABSOLUTE GREATS like STEVIE WONDER and MICHAEL JACKSON. McCartney could do it all! This song is TIMELESS, it's MORE RELEVANT NOW THAN EVER!

McCartney II came out in 1980, two years later was Tug of War. Lots of variety on Tug of War album. Take it away was a top twenty hit in the UK.

Ebony and Ivory takes a rap these days from some folks who say it corny. I don't get it. I always liked the song.

You ask if there were any hits on this album... "Ebony & Ivory" was #1 in the US for EIGHT weeks in a row in May & June of 1982. It spent the most weeks at the top of the charts of any McCartney post-Beatles single (and tied with "Hey Jude" for his Beatles hits). It was also the most weeks at the top for any Stevie Wonder song in his career. It was #1 in the US, UK, Canada, West Germany, Japan, Spain, Norway, Israel, Ireland, Iceland, and Finland. It was also nominated for 3 Grammy Awards (song of the year, record of the year and best pop vocal performance by a duo or group. "Take It Away" was also a hit record... #10 in the US and #15 in the UK. The album was #1 in the US, UK, Canada, Holland, Japan, Norway and Sweden. It was nominated for a Grammy for album of the year. Paul did win the Brit Award for best male artist for this album. Mark Lewisohn (one of the most widely recognized Beatles writer/"experts") considered this album to be Paul's best post-Beatles album up to that point (better than any of his 1970s LPs).

Mull of Kintyre is Paul’s best charting single with 9 weeks at #1 and is still the best selling completely non-charity single in the UK Lewisohn has a lot of biases. Also there is no way Tug of War is better than Ram and Band on the Run

@@ewest14 - I was clearly talking about his song with the most weeks at #1 in the US. I have no idea if some song of his might have been #1 for ten weeks in some other country. Could be... Lewisohn is allowed to have his own opinions. "Ram" is my top McCartney LP.... but it doesn't bother me that Mark Lewisohn sees "Tug of War" as better.

To this day I still can make up my mind on why on Earth McCartney's bass performance on this song isn't ranked among his best ever. The bass gets a lot overlooked here, but I think it is a great, groovy, performance. Really!

The song that was a massive hit which decades later became hip to hate. The actual musicality is crafted to perfection right down to the handclaps. The lyrics today are continuously bashed bu self-identifying avant guard hipsters but I think they miss the point. The whole point is that peace should be simply. It shouldn't be something complex and confusing. That my be true but what is wrong with wishing otherwise. The production by George Martin is beautiful. Possibly one of Paul's greatest albums. By the way, John sang Give Peace a Chance - isn't that just as simple a lyrical piece as Ebony and Ivory. So sad that so many of the masses want to rubbish this great song. Perhaps it part explains why we have not progressed very far. It even gets placed in the top ten of the worst pop songs ever. I could cry and the cynicsm and lack of appreciation. The entire album is genius.

There is a part in this song that was the first piece of music to make me cry. I like the idea of the song but can't help feeling it's a bit over the top. As mentioned before I don't sense this song as real part of the album though it fits perfectly productionwise

I read somewhere that McCartney originally asked EMI to make this album to be a double album, but George Martin persuaded him to keep it a single album. Some of the “rejected” tracks ended up on Piece of pie a couple of years later.

@@Uetti correct - it was just McCartney calling it Piece of pie in a funny interview at the release of Pipes of peace. Great album that as well - as we’re going to hear the next few days 👍
